Recap: FIDE World Championship in Argentina

Veselin TopalovThe 2005 world chess championship is currently taking place in San Luis, Argentina. The slugfest is being fought out between eight players including one woman.

Here are the standings after Round 9:

    1 Veselin Topalov 7.5 pts.
    2 Peter Svidler 5.5 pts.
    3 Vishwanathan Anand 5 pts.
    4 Alexander Morozevich 4 pts.
    5 Peter Leko 4 pts.
    6 Rustam Kasimdzhanov 3.5 pts.
    7 Michael Adams 3 pts.
    8 Judit Polgar 2.5 pts.

Veselin Topalov (pictured), a powerful grandmaster from Bulgaria, is one of my favorite players because of his attacking style -- subtle and uncompromising. This super-GM is expected to win the match but he still faces an overwhelming opposition. For example, Vishy Anand of India and Peter Svidler of Russia. So far, however, since the start of the match he's been winning and drawing but hasn't lost yet.

For more on the match go to chessbase.com or visit the official website.
