Looking for loads of laughs? Then head over to Daniel Street

Stephanie JanucikBy Stephanie Janucik

It sometimes seems hard to get a good laugh around here, especially one you pay for. I had been to one comedy show in all my life — in Michigan, mind you — but I never heard of anything going on in the region that would be worth my while. So when someone at a regular Sunday softball game mentioned a new comedy club, I had to look into it for myself. The rumor that it was so close to home made it even more exciting.

After some minor research, I discovered the recent addition to downtown Milford's nightlife. Daniel Street (ironically located at 21 Daniel St., right across the street from the Stonebridge Restaurant; 877-4446) not only offers live music, DJs and private parties, but also an open-mike comedy show every Wednesday night. Billy Winn, 99.1-FM WPLR's morning radio personality and stand-up comedian, began hosting open-mike night at Daniel Street in early July and continues to present professional, young, and aspiring comedians to a live audience.

As part of that audience, I was pleased to find out it was only a $3 cover charge. Although drinks were at market price (approximately $4 for a beer), it made me feel better knowing that my pocket wasn't already broken on the way in. I also spotted some nachos, chicken wings and salads. Shows generally start at 9 p.m., but to make sure you get a good seat, or if you want to pre-game with some snacks and drinks, you may want to get there early. I was late — as always — and my date and I were seated at the table closest to the stage. As we sat in the dim, studio-like atmosphere, I wasn't sure what to expect. Unlike scanning Comedy Central for a funny joke or two, I couldn't change the channel even if I wanted to.

I was a bit skeptical as to how funny these people could actually be — I mean, they're performing at a small club in Milford — but I have to say that I was rolling for most of the performances. When Billy Winn came out more animated than ever, I knew the show was going to be worth a few hours of my time. Immediately after introducing the first performing comic, he began to socialize with the audience, especially those sitting closest to the stage (that would be me). Once I broke through my shyness, and the red embarrassment faded, it was all very entertaining. And then there was laughter.

For a dose of your own, stop by Daniel Street Club on a Wednesday night (regular business hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 6 p.m.-1 a.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m.-2 a.m.). For a list of upcoming events and/or to join the mailing list, you can visit www.danielstreetclub.com.
