    Heating up in boys hoop

basketball.png KCUnderwood.jpg Saturday night produced an intriguing result from the SWC when Stratford buried Bunnell 69-43 on Bulldog Blvd. Bunnell coach Pat Yerina thought his team might struggle, going as far as saying his team wasn't a league championship contender in the preseason.

While we'll reserve judgment just yet, Stratford certainly did its part in proving Yerina right. Three Red Devils scored in double figures, led by guards Jason Charles had (17 points) and Russell Payton (15). Stratford led 36-19 at halftime and cruised to this non-league victory.

On Friday night, of course, we had the battle of the SWC's other top contenders, Kolbe Cathedral and Notre Dame-Fairfield. While Kolbe Cathedral won 66-64, Notre Dame had the better of play for the majority of the game and could have won if it just made one or two plays.

Other than St. Joseph's loss to Trinity Catholic in the final of last week's Northeast Classic at St. Joseph, things have been relatively quiet in the FCIAC. Staples and Stamford are still undefeated, though.

Though there aren't too many great matchups, most of the local teams will be in action Monday and Tuesday night as we start to settle into the first true week of basketball season.

We'll have much more Tuesday afternoon, but here's a sneek peek of what to look forward to as the boys basketball season ratchets up a notch.

    Here's tonight's docket:
A fair SWC non-league game between New Milford and Brookfield and then it's Bridgeport vs. New Haven when coach Anthony Hill brings Wilbur Cross to Central.

This is Central's second game against a New Haven basketball team. The Hilltoppers lost to Hyde just a week ago. We'll be reporting on this game.

Here's Tuesday's docket: 6 p.m. ...CSC: Abbott Tech at O'Brien Tech. Platt Tech at Goodwin Tech, Bullard Havens Tech at Vinal Tech. FCIAC: Trinity Catholic at Westhill.

7 p.m. ... SCC Quinnipiac: Xavier at Fairfield Prep (the Jesuits must get something going), West Haven at Hamden, SCC Housatonic: Amity at Cheshire. SCC Hammonasset: Hillhouse at Jonathan Law (trial by fire for the Lawmen). SCC Interdivision: Notre Dame-West Haven at Foran, Career at Shelton. NVL:Crosby at Seymour, Ansonia at Wolcott. SWC non-league: Immaculate at Weston, Kolbe Cathedral at Masuk (we get to see what Masuk's all about), Pomperaug at Bunnell. FCIAC: Stamford at Darien (the Black Knights still are and will remain unbeaten), Fairfield Ludlowe at New Canaan, Wilton at Danbury, Staples at Trumbull (coach Colin Devine faces his former employer), Ridgefield at Fairfield Warde, St. Joseph at Brien McMahon. Non-league: Derby at Oxford, Stamford Academy at Bethel.
