Football: Central wins CT State Weightlifiting

Central won the 2009 Connecticut State Weightlifting Championship at New London on Saturday.

The Hillhoppers topped New London with a combined weight total of 13,620 pounds over five weight classes. New London finished second with 13,190 pounds, Wolcott was third with 12,405, Ansonia finished fourth at 12,390 and Oxford was fifth at 12,370.

Staples (12,110) finished seventh, Shelton (11,775) was ninth and Masuk (11,690) was 10th.
More than thirty schools competed in the event, which features bench, power clean and squat lifts.

This was the same weightlifting event where rumors began circulating about the impending dismissal New London coach Jack Cochran (who runs the event) and led to Monday's student walk out, reported in the The Day of New London: NLHS Students Stand Up for Cochran

This all started on Friday, when sources told The Day, that New London was going to be fined $750 for Cochran's most-recent infraction, conducting offseason baseball practices at the school.

Last year, New London was fined $250 for violating a rule prohibiting junior high school students from spring practices.

    Did the competition include seniors?

How did Mighty Masuk get destroyed?

No it does not include seniors. Central, we had our own Juniors and Sophmores competing. We're happy with the victory of the competition and good luck to all the teams we play this year.
