We're smack-dab in the middle of what we like to call Connecticut's all-star break, where our outgoing football seniors say one last goodbye in the two local all-star games, the Governor's Cup, sponsored by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and the Hall of Fame Football Classic, run by the New Haven and Fairfield County chapters of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
The Governor's Cup between Connecticut and Rhode Island was held last Saturday with Connecticut once again beating up on the Rhode Island all-stars 31-10 at Rentschler Field. Read that story from our own Victor Santos here: McKoy, Easley spark Connecticut to win. Connecticut's victory was its sixth in a row and eighth overall in the 10-game series, which has probably strengthened what had been a subtle call for Connecticut's organizers to drop Rhode Island from the series.

The Ralph DeSantis Fairfield County Chapter can relate. It hasn't won since 2002 and it hasn't been close, either. Chapter head Paul Criscuolo has done his best to get Fairfield County's best (players, coaches and effort) out of the game to no avail.

This year, with New Canaan coach Lou Marinelli running the show, Fairfield County has launched a rather aggressive media campaign led by local (i.e. FCIAC) football maven Tim Parry of the popular FCIACfootballblog and its fledgling sister Local Sports Feed site (localsportsfeed.com), who is actually holding what is believed to be the first Hall of Fame Classic media day on Monday. Organization helps, but will it work on the field?

Here's the skinny on the actual 12th Hall of Fame Classic, which will be held Friday, July 11 at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven.

12th HALL OF FAME FOOTBALL CLASSIC
WHAT — All-Star high school football game.

Past Classics

New Haven County leads series 8-3
1997 — New Haven 14, Fairfield 7
1998 — Fairfield 19, New Haven 9
1999 — New Haven 20, Fairfield 0

2005 — New Haven 19, Fairfield 3
2006 — New Haven 24, Fairfield 15
2007 — New Haven 31, Fairfield 6

This does indeed look like one of the most talented Fairfield County team we've seen in years, with Octavias McKoy, Torrey Mack, Jon Jackson, Trevardo Williams, Charlie Westfal and Kevin Joy leading an all-star cast. But the proof, as always, comes on the lines, which appears to be led by Wilton's Joe Smith, Central's Kenneth Cobb and Trumbull's Dave Wowk.

More to come...

Not a heck of a lot of webstuff to sink your teeth into, but here's the Bishops' MaxPreps page.

The Bishops went 5-5 last year, a marked improvement on its 1-9 record the previous season. It went to a Division 3 Super Bowl in 2005, according to a Wikipedia entry on the school.

It's an intriguing matchup, but only because it matches one of ours against one of theirs. I would have much rather seen Notre Dame play a Connecticut school out of conference.

Alas, like a quite a few schools around here, Notre Dame needed to look far beyond Connecticut's borders for this game thanks to a couple of short-sighted conferences who chose to schedule their 11th games in-house (cough, cough, FCIAC! FCIAC! Cough, cough, NVL! NVL!).

So it's off to Boston, ND goes.

With Bunnell's Mark Harrison throwing his helmet in with Greg Schiano and Rutgers, who's left among Connecticut prospects?

Aside from Seymour LB Mike Osiecki committing to UConn and a few others of note, there don't seem to be many high-profile BCS recruits from the great state of Connecticut among the Class of 2009.

We already knew this wasn't going to be the kind of year we had last season, where we had seven (or eight if you count Ansonia's Alex Thomas going to Yale) regional athletes going to high-profile football-playing universities. But will the fall from grace be so dramatic?
To start, there's not one Connecticut player graduating in 2009 listed among Rivals.com's Top 250.

Off the top of my head, there's only one other regional athlete worthy of a BCS (read: Division I) look, and that's Foran's Jake White.

Here's White doing his thing for the Lions last fall in a nice little clip found on White's YouTube page.

According to Scout.com, he has reportedly been looking at BCS schools like Temple, Iowa, Syracuse, Louisville, Duke and Connecticut. It's certainly a nice list for White, especially with Louisville in the fold, but standard fare for any BSC-caliber Connecticut recruit.

After White there's a drop. You can mention Greenwich LB Ricky Riscia, Stamford CB Carrington Beckford and Hamden S Kris McKinnie to sum up our region's prospects.

Elsewhere in Connecticut seems stronger. You have <strike>East</strike> Northwest Catholic TE Jake Golic (Notre Dame), St. Paul WR Marcus Aiken (UConn), Hartford Public's Andre Lawrence <strike>(uncommitted)</strike> (Boston College), Wilby WR Dwayne Bennett (uncommitted).

Over in New London you have TE Anthony Schiavone (uncommitted) who is getting looks from Boston College, Buffalo, Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, Rutgers, Temple.

His quarterback, however, just might be Connecticut's top 2009 recruit: Jordan Reed (uncommitted), the Class of 2009's biggest recruit, who's reportedly got Boston College, Duke, Florida, Maryland, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee on his tail.

But that's about it, folks: A nice offering but nowhere near the Class of 2008, which shows just how exceptional that class was in the big picture of Connecticut high school football talent.

How's the Class of 2010 shaping up?

“I’d watch them play on television and I thought this was the best place for me,” Harrison told the Connecticut Post in this article. “This was the school I wanted to go to. It was perfect.”

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Harrison caught 42 passes for 880 yards and nine touchdowns while leading Bunnell to its second straight SWC and Class L state championships. Harrison was a Connecticut Post all-star in basketball, not football, during his junior season. But there was no doubt about his skill and athleticism, those who witnessed his 99-yard nullified-by-procedure-penalty finger-tip touchdown catch in the SWC title game can tell you that.

He made his decision after visiting the school over the weekend.
"“This means a lot,” Harrison said Tuesday night. “Now I can just focus on my grades and not all the recruiting process pressure any more. It was a lot of stress."

Now, I'll admit this isn't the best video, since I took it from across the field on Thanksgiving Day, but it's still cool (and you get the idea). For a complete run-down on Harrison's statistics, click his name in the first paragraph.

Anderson became the new school's first football coach in 2001 and went 49-19 in six varsity seasons. His only losing season was his first, 3-8 in 2002. Woodland was 8-3 in its first official NVL season in 2003.

From 2004-2005, Woodland went 24-1 and won back-to-back Class SS and NVL championships. After a 6-4 season in 2006, Woodland rebounded with an 8-3 season last year and was the NVL runner up a Class SS semifinalist.

Because of that success, Anderson's name constantly came up when other head coaching positions opened. He was turned down for the head coaching job at Hamden, which went to Guilford's Scott Benoit, and was rumored to be in the running at Torrington before that job went to SCSU strength and conditioning coach and former Seymour assistant Dan Dunaj.

Edit: Anderson officially resigned this morning and told his players during a workout. Outgoing AD Dan Scavone said the assistants will run the team's upcoming spring practice. Anderson added that it would be Tim Shea.

Anderson will coach receivers at UNH, which is reviving its once-dominant football program under new coach Peter Rossomando.

Due to the threat of rain and, probably more important, thunder and lightning, the CIAC baseball has been postponed to Sunday (look below for the rescheduling). The first rounds of the boys lacrosse tournaments are still on, however.

(And here they are: Class L | Class M | Class S )

At first there had been some gloomy and doomy (sic) weather forecasts. Rain. Thunder. Lightning. Hail. Brimstone. Cats. Dogs.

But a quick check of our friends at The Weather Channel shows that the heavy stuff would barely touch our fair state... if at all.

So, probably an ill-advised preemptive strike by the CIAC. We could have played all of these games. This makes me angry 'cause now I'm working Sunday. Thanks CIAC.

Here's today's reading from Day 4:
In softball, from the Rachele Fico invitational

Dargon, Trumbull advance to softball semifinals.

And it should be a good one: SCC runner-up Amity, which defeated South Windsor 9-0 (but didn't call it in to our offices for publication) takes on Staples, the FCIAC champions, who will likely throw sophomore ace DAVID Speer (ahem, I accidentally confused him with a former family friend in Tuesday's state tournament primer), the MVP of said FCIAC championship game.

Here are some early returns on baseball...

      Shelton 8, Notre Dame-WH 2 (F) -- So much for the newly-crowned SCC champs.

Amity 9, South Windsor 0 (F) -- No such problems for the SCC runners-up.

In softball...
NFA 20, Ridgefield 1 -- Ridgefield pitcher Ashley Higgins was not available due to a death in the family and, unfortunately, the Tigers had to go to an inexperienced pitcher. NFA's reward? Masuk.

Bunnell 10, Staples 5 -- Staples' pitcher, we hear, was knocked out of the game with a line drive. ...Bunnell now faces Amity in the second round.

Sacred Heart Academy 3, Bristol Eastern 1 -- This is pretty amazing given that Eastern is a softball powerhouse.

7 p.m. update baseball -- In Class LL SWC champion Masuk defeats FCIAC power Norwalk 3-2. ...Taylor Lasko and Bunnell outlast Tom Lawrence and West Haven, 1-0. ...Bunnell advances to play Westhill, a 16-0 winner over Naugatuck (uh oh. Is this further proof of a weak NVL?) ...Ridgefield 7-6 over New Milford. ...Class L -- Law defeats Darien, 2-0, and advances to face Platt Tech. ...Bethel will indeed play Fairfield Ludlowe in the second round. The Wildcats crushed (another) NVL team in Crosby, 13-2 (this does NOT bode well for Seymour's record). ...In Class M Weston advances (5-0 over Lewis Mills), St. Joseph advances (12-0 over Suffield) and will face East Catholic. ...Wolcott beat No. 2 seed Cheney Tech, 7-3, (no shock here) and will play Foran, a 12-5 winner over Northwestern.

And, what were we just talking about? Seymour crushes No. 33 seeded Stonington 4-3 in the first round of Class M. Yikes, guys. Yikes.

In softball: Newtown defeated Greenwich 2-0 in the LL first round and will now face Simsbury for the right to (ahem) lose to Masuk. ...Cheshire and Westhill both won 9-0 and will face each other in the second round. ...In Class M Lauralton Hall defeated St. Joseph, 5-0.

Baseball, 7:18 update Trumbull, one of the only teams to actually play a second round game, defeated Newington 3-2 and advances to Saturday's quarterfinals. They get a nice break.

Understanding that many of the locations must have been hopelessly deluged, I still believe some towns could have wait out the storm and played. Some did, but not nearly as many I thought.

Regardless, we had some intriguing goings on in the first round...
Heartbreaker for Stratford. The Red Devils' inconsistent season comes to a 5-4 close aginst Montville in the Class M tournament's first round. Stratford failed to hold a three-run lead in the seventh inning and then lost on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. ...Elsewhere, Bullard-Havens advanced against Windham Tech.

So much for Notre Dame: We thought the Class S bracket shaped up nicely for the Lancers as the No. 12 seed. Yet they lost to No. 21 Gilbert 7-5 in the first round. ...Can't tell you much about that game since no one from ND called it in. Edit: Actually, here's the report from the Register Citizen of Torrington, which covers Gilbert. Looks like it was almost a carbon copy of the SWC title game, except that Notre Dame showed a little more offensive life... just not enough to stave off the first round exit.

Mahlstadt goes for Trumbull I thought Trumbull would have started Ryan Yerina in the first round of the Class LL tournament. But Dan Mahlstadt goes instead. Despite giving up a first-inning run, Trumbull advances with a 7-1 win over Hall, despite just five hits and four Hall errors. Trumbull, which has struggled offensively through most of this year, is going to have to do better than that, especially against Newington, which won its first-round game 17-10.

In softball congrats to Derby's Christina Gelardi for throwing a no-hitter in her first-round win over Norwich Tech. ... a passed ball is Foran's savior and Bethel's death-knell in a 3-2 nine-inning win. ...With a 15-0, six-inning win, Lauralton Hall shows Enfield it has long way to go before it can start playing real softball like the rest of us.
