    Frager announces three NLI

Fairfield University women’s basketball coach Joe Frager announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 season at the recent Fairfield basketball roundtable discussion at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn.

“It’s not going to happen overnight but we’re going to get where we want to be and that’s at the top of our conference,” Frager told the audience. “I think we need some good recruiting classes to accomplish that, toward that end, we’re bringing in four players for next season and possibly a fifth.”

    The three NLI players are:

Katelyn Linney, guard, 5-8, St. John’s Viannery, New Jersey.
Linney averaged 16.1 points last season as a senior and finished with 1,455 career points as St. John’s Vianny won the state title. She was a first-team all-state selection and the Most Valuable Player in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title game.

Brittany MacFarlane, center, 6-1, St. Thomas More Catholic, Hamilton Ontario.
MacFarlane led St. Thomas More Catholic to a 26-9 record last season and was a member of Team Ontario Under-17 Team.

Laura Vetra, forward, 6-1, Fort Worth Christian, Fort Worth, Texas.
Vetra, who hails from Jurmala, Latvia, averaged 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds for Fort Worth (24-12) last season. She was a first-team All-District and a first-team All-State selection as a senior. Her father, Gundars Vetra, played with the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves in 1991-92. She also played for the Latvia basketball club team Kolibri.

In addition, Kara Fillion will be a walk-on in 2009-10.
Fillion, a 5-11, guard, attended Morgan High in Clinton and averaged 21.3 points as a senior. She was named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State team.

Frager is still looking to add another player.

“We’re excited about the future. We think those three can really make a positive impact along with Kara,” Frager said. “We’re excited about what the future holds for us.”
