On School Spirit Day, students at Kings Highway School in Westport participated in a 1950s-style Sock Hop as part of a community service outreach project.
On Jan. 25, hundreds of elementary school children arrived at school carrying new socks and wearing 50s clothing, many donning poodle skirts and pony tails. Two volunteer parents, Sarah Hickson and Juli Smyrnios, organized the fun-filled event.
During recess, each grade came to the gym, where admission to the Sock Hop was a new pair of children’s socks. As they arrived, the socks were collected and pinned up on clotheslines strung around the gymnasium. Kindergartners through fifth graders danced to the 50s music that blared from a boom box.
More than 500 pairs of socks were collected for the Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport, a nonprofit agency that offers literacy and life skills training to low-income, undereducated women. The children enrolled at the center’s on-site educational childcare program received the donated socks.

    Long, hard journey pays off

    holymock2.jpg

The Holy Family School mock trial team.

The journey began in early October and ended on Jan. 24, in New Britain Superior Court, where the Connecticut Consortium for Law and Citizenship Education, Inc. (CCLCE, Inc.) hosted the State Finals of its Middle School Mock Trial Competition. Holy Family School was one of only four teams in Connecticut to qualify to move on to the semifinal round of competition.
There was nothing “mock” about this trial. The team was coached by attorneys John Walshe and Eroll Skyers, as well as Tim Deenihan, who spent hours preparing the students.
“The students were responsible for writing their own speeches, their own questions, and their own presentations,” says Principal Larry Fitzgerald.
All the hard work eventually paid off, and the school team, by a 2 to 1 decision, came in second.
Congratulations were extended to the students on behalf of the Diocese of Bridgeport from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Margaret Dames and Deputy Assistant Superintendent John Cook.

Neighbor to Neighbor is written and photographed by our readers. We are looking for contributions from your club, your school, your family. Your second-grade play, your Cub Scout Pack's pinewood derby, your youth sports team awards-- send it to Neighbor to Neighbor. It can even be your coverage of a local event. Please keep it very short, and just the facts, folks. (Opinions are for the editorial page). Mail prints and write ups to:
