    31 Cents

I tracked down a shop steward today and asked him the following questions:

How long will the strike go on?
A: At least a few weeks, Finger saw Pratt fold and he figures we will too.

How would you describe the turnout (on the picket line)?
A: Very good, of all the people I work with I've seen all but a few.

How would you describe media coverage?
A: Pro-company, no where have I read about the 31 cents.

31 cents. This may have been the deal breaker last Sunday and what unquestionably lead to the "do not recommend" platform of the Union officials.

More precisely SIK/U.T. has decided that their payment on behalf of employees shall be cut 31 cents PER HOUR, PER EMPLOYEE. Roughly speaking $600 a year per employee or a little over two million bucks (per year) based on the current workforce. Even if it amounted to ten million this seems to be a bad business move. I'm not privy on sticker prices but even a stooge will tell you that every strike day with the "replacement" workers the schedule slides down the slippery slope and SIK's reputation takes another shot in the kidneys.

    Your Comments

Raise your hand if you, as an individual, can't afford thirty-one cents. Then lower your arm to pat yourself on the back... congratulations, you are living beyond your means.

Well, you do have the freedom to go out and either get a better job or pay 100% for your own private health plan if you don't like what the company is offering.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 5:02 PM

You are all acting like it's YOUR 31 cents! For the love of God, wake up and smell the reality, people. It's Sikorsky's 31 cents and they are not obligated to share it with you!

Posted by: Huh?! at February 27, 2006 5:03 PM

"Sikorsky and the union did have initial contact with each other to explore what opportunities there are to resume negotiations," said Bud Grebey, a Sikorsky spokesman. "We'll need some further evaluation of that contact today to see if an opportunity presents itself to get back to the table."

Loosely translated, this means that the union went crawling back to see if the contract was still on the table. The company said yes, with the following exceptions:
    -same health plan,
-no more education plan for hourly, and
    -no ratification bonus.

    Good going, 1150!

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 5:13 PM

Why would you all be on strike for 31 cents? You make $65k on average, and are compaining about 31 cents?

Besides, if the overall amount is about $600 a year like Mr. Gozzi says, then at this point you're only fighting for about 19 cents, since you spent last week flushing $1000 in wages down the toilet.

Huh?! is absolutely right. You were offered 3.5% raise just for showing up and $2000 to sign. The company does NOT owe you what equates to a 31 cent raise on top of that. Why is that such a difficult concept for some people?

Posted by: Another employee at February 27, 2006 5:33 PM

31 Cents per hour / $12.40 per week?? What are we talking about ?? Our lively hood is at stake here.

An MH-60S left today for Aircraft Join at Kaman Helicopters in Bloomfield , Conn. Kaman was recently selected to perform this effort in continuation of Operation's transformation. Kaman was selected as a result of competition with several other qualified suppliers. This effort was initially planned to commence with Tail #95. As a result of the work stoppage at Stratford , efforts to accelerate this activity were completed. After completion of the first few MH-60Ss, Kaman is expected to begin joining the UH-60L and UH-60M aircraft.

Beginning this week, Kaman Aerospace will also be taking on additional work for the MH-60 program. Cockpits will be shipped to Kaman's Jacksonville , Fla. facility for Unit 355 canopy fit-out work.

Let's go back to work. There is a lot more at stake here than medical benefits. Prior notification was given with regards to outsourcing "Non Core" product. Guess what, this strike has accelerated this activity. Aircraft stuctures and the processes that support them will be exiting the building to built elsewhere and may never return. That's right, I'll say it again, Prior Notification was given that these products were targeted for outsourcing and do not have to return to be assembled here at the conclusion of the strike.

Let's go back to work. We lost Commanche, VH, and outsourced many items. No one at this point in time has lost their job. As a matter of fact several hundred hourly workers have been hired. Do not be so naive to think that the offer of a job for everyone who is willing and able will be a standing offer at this accelerated outsourcing pace.

Let's go back to work. Negotiations are over. The company submitted their best & final offer. Many of us help make this company what is today. Let's not help dismantle it brick by brick.

    -Let's go back to work-

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 5:34 PM

    -same health plan
-no more education plan for hourly
    -no ratification bonus

There is absolutley no way the company would stop the employee scholar program. They wont because these are the people the company wants to keep. The employees that continue their education are the ones that want to better themselves and are a better service to the company. The employee scholar program was never a union negotiated benefit, it is a benefit provided by UTC to all its employees.

Rocco has sold the hard working people of the union down the river. His reterick has poisened the worker. S/A is the first of contracts. He is just the set-up man for the rest of the union. Next Prat, then Carrier. 0.016% This is what teamsters 1150 mean to United Tech. Do the math they employ 220,000 worldwide 3600 1150 memnbers doesn't have that much power.
The replacement worker untrained at best are doing most of the jobs in 60% of the time it takes the average worker.

That doesn't look good at all for the 11150 guys Soon the 200 plus agency fee will be crossing the line, just the first of many.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 6:21 PM

    Fight For Your Right,
I was waiting for someone to make a comparison like that. If I was the one geeting beat up, I am thinking it was folks like you that were the bullies who beat up other kids for their lunch money, because you thought they owed it to you... Kinda like the union is doing to the company right now... Usually people mature and grow out of that behavior... guess you didn't.

And then there's the fact that Name-Your-Own-Price Healthcare isn't a RIGHT in the first place.

Posted by: Another Employee at February 27, 2006 6:22 PM

I have a question for the hourly employees. Who voted to strike and has now had a chance to think it through and would have voted to ratify?

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 6:32 PM

go to new york times on line, 2/24/06 edition, U.S. to pay big employers billions not to end their retiree health plans.. read it and weep, now our taxes can go to other companies for their healthcare.

Let's go back to the table and come up with something!!!!! We need to go back to work, I am one for the few people who doesn't even have 90 days yet. Some of the stuff I see going on in Sikorsky's makes me sick, but I knew it before I started because I have family that works there and told me what it is like. Get rid of the dead weight and let the people who want to work, WORK.
I have a person who works(has been there 26years) next to me that sleeps for about 6 hours of the day and my leadman has seen it and my foreman has seen it, nothing happens to this person. Let me ask this question why does the union protect someone like this when they can get someone there that wants to work? Come on get rid of the DEAD weight.
We want to go back to work!!!!!

Amid all the posturing and name calling what screams out is the fear of the intelligent on both sides.

Posted by: itssad at February 27, 2006 7:17 PM

I think the real fear is not so much who will win the contract debate, but whether or not there will still be a Sikorsky Aircraft in CT to debate about.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 7:36 PM

The older you get, the more you will realize how much you don't know. And that people that are not well educated or particularly intelligent can and will sometimes run circles around you.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 7:50 PM

To the person that does not have his 90 days in yet. If you seen this dead wood sleeping why did you not go to the boss instead of the so call leadman. Sikorsky locked the hourly that wanted to go back to sleep this person must be one that is on the agency list. Most of us that work at Sikorsky work as a new employee don't judge all of us to the sleeping one that you work with. I am sorry that as one of the new empolyees at Sikorsky you had to be witness to that kind of behavior you need to contact the boss. We all need to get back to work soon so you can see that it's a wonderfull place to work, but right now we're fighting for something we beleive in for you and your children.

Posted by: anonymous at February 27, 2006 9:03 PM

I agree with the dead wood. How many of you heard when you were new; slow down - don't make it look too easy. Why are there constantly games. It's not just the new guy who has experienced this, it's everywhere. Misuse of sick time, excess overtime. Who sees work being done on a Saturday morning before 9AM. It's been a free ride for some for years.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 9:19 PM

Well I just spoke to a salary friend and he says that there is going to be a meeting with the Foremen on the floor and that they are going to have to pick the top 10 hourly employees of there dept. and they will recievie a letter in the mail asking if they would like there job back with the 80/20 medical coverage and have nothing to do the union, he says this will happen in 2 weeks. He also says that some Machines are running in the Machine shop but not much going on, is a Ghost town.

Posted by: Anonymous hourly at February 27, 2006 9:33 PM

Its been a free ride for lots for a long time. The management needs to be given some authority to deal with these problem people instead of looking the other way. HR has made it too difficult for a supervisor disipline an employee let alone discharge one. I dont know if it is because of the countless hours that would be spent on grievances or what but the place has gotten out of control. Now with all the new hires within the last 6-7 years many people are doing less than they ever did before. These are the people with 25-30 years that should be setting an example for the new hires.

Now that contract negotiations should be begining soon we should try to get the whole seniority issue in the contract scrapped. Lay-off from the top not the bottom. The new hires are being trained and not only doing the jobs as good but quicker than these older used up guys that dont give it their all every day.

I have been told to slow down countless times while I was just doing my job. The people that think you go too fast is in most cases a lazy P.O.S. The company needs to start reconizing that it is the younger people and not a lot of the older guys that come into work everyday and give it their all. Until then, the new hires will get discouraged quickly when they are putting in 100% and the guy sleeping half the day away makes more money, gets promoted first, and gets to keep their job if there is a lay-off. So superviors if you are reading this, when all is back to normal maybe you guys need to start working on getting some of the guys that are just taking up space out for good.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 27, 2006 9:38 PM

I also agree with the dead wood, I am also a new employee. I get a job that's 8 hours and I am done in 2 but they tell me to sit on it or to go get lost for a while, they want me to use all the time that is reqired. Why is this? I came there to work not to goof off.

Posted by: anonymous at February 27, 2006 9:46 PM

The reasoning for this is that they have taken 8 hours to do the job for years and now they have a new hire come in and do it in 2 hours, it makes them look bad. They are useless P.O.S and need to go. Take my advice, if you do go back, go back with the attitude that you are not going to let anyone else influence your work. Take what you need for time and move on to the next job. You dont have to kill yourself but dont be a P.O.S either. Believe me you will be much better off and stay away from the negative people, they will only drag you down. In the long run it will benefit you so much more. Say you are having a bad day, dont feel good and not like doing much, but if you come in and give it your all most of the time you are there, management will look the other way and cut you some slack here and there. I have been on both side, useless, just coming in to pick up a paycheck and now a model employee. I have learned, too much time listening to the bitter people affected me, causing me to not do s**t and take a lot of time off. I kinda had a reality check and started avoiding the negative people and work hasn't been better since until this B.S. from the last week or so. After this is all over I plan on remaining a good employee but may get fired one day, but it wont be for screwing off, it will be for shoving one of those damn whistles down someones throat if I ever have to listen to that again.

Well... I see the blather has expanded from salary vs. hourly to young vs. old! I believe it's the "divide and conquer" strategy.

Posted by: Larry Wilson at February 27, 2006 11:16 PM

deadwood thats been working less than 90days. you may be a good worker, but i can tell you for sure, most of the new hires, should not have made 90 days, but did of who they know or related to. Because of this us much older employees have to work twice as hard to make up the difference. So sometimes if we tell someone to slow up its because we do not trust the work this person does and we will not have to do much re-work. if a 90 day wonder messes up and you try to tell your supervisor they will not make it, he has his hands tied because mom or dador family member saves him or her, look around in your dept and see how many there are.

how much money did the union workers make sikorsky? where would sikorsky be without the best helocopter workers in the world. we are proud highly skilled workers. isnt that worth.31 an hour? and especially if we pay that.31 out of our general increase. bring in the scabs or let salaried personal and for sure sikorsky will lose the title of the best helocopter maker in the world.
what about george david. how much will he make next year 109,000,000? wow. i wonder how much he and the corp. exects. pay for insurance? I BET NOTHING,i wish someone would ask that question.
and for all those people that say we make 65k that is hogwash, and if i did,are you jeloues?
if you are living above your means thats just to bad, thats the real reason why you want to get back in so you can work 20hrs a day 7 days a week to keep what you have. thats to bad because you wont have time to enjoy it,but your wife, kids and her new husband will, because you will either be divorced or dead,so is .31 ann hour worth it? you bet it is!!!!
its for your good,my good and the future workforce good. is this the way you treat your family? of course not.

Posted by: worker at February 28, 2006 12:01 AM

here's something for someone to look into.

Who in Cigna will make money if Sikorsky employee's pay for the insurance? The money that is payed by the employees for healthcare, and if not used will be a profit for Cigna? Who are the major shareholders of Cigna? Who recieves the profit from Cigna? Why is Sikorsky pushing for Cigna to be the only insurer for Sikosky employee's? How come other insurance agencies has not been asked to be added or to compete for bids on the Sikorsky contract? Are there other companies that can offer better rates for the working class? Are there shareholders in Cigna that will profit from the Sikorsky workers invested premiums? Do the same shareholders also own stock or shares in UTC?

I did a 10 minute search of major shareholders...and I wasn't happy with what I found...I'm sure that if I looked deeper...then I would be shocked and pissed off.

31 cents can go a long way.....if multiplied by 3600

Posted by: Anonymous at February 28, 2006 1:32 AM

I think the whole 31 cent issue is negligible for both sides and is really not the point. Yes, the company can afford to let you keep your so-cheap-it's-almost-free health plan a little while longer and yes, you can afford to pony up and pay a little more for the one offered. The point is that the old health plan ceased to exist as of midnight 2/20, the same time union members voted to replace it with absolutely nothing.

The company (UTC) has made a business decision that all UTC employees will be covered under the same plan and this is the plan they chose. For those of you who did not participate in the process of researching and choosing the best plan for the company - which is probably everyone on this board - then you have no firsthand knowledge of the decision-making process that lead to this choice and, frankly, nothing but speculation to offer as to why this particular plan administrator was chosen. So rather than spout off conspiracy theories, perhaps your time and energy would be better spent trying to figure out how to make this plan work for you. It's the only one you are likely to be offered.

I would also like to address the issue of the hourly workers who are pressured by other lazy hourly workers to slow down. It is this kind of activity that will eventually cause Sikorsky Aircraft to remove the union. And before you start shrieking that it can't be done, let me assure you, oh, indeed, it can! In reference to an earlier post, many supervisors have already made up their lists of who to keep and who to let go and it was a MAXIMUM of ten to keep. They don't HAVE to keep ten, if they don't have ten good workers to keep. So there could be some serious layoffs in the future here. Thank your union and the lazy bastards who refuse to actually EARN their pay for this situation.

Lastly, there is a lot of negativity on this board which I know has to do with fear on the part of the hourlies and aggravation on the part of the salaried. Let us all try to not use stereotypes, because we all know there are all kinds of people on both sides. And if you happen to read a post that you feel is inflammatory, keep in mind that the writer probably doesn't mean ALL, but just a select FEW. Also, we all have a right to our opinions and we all have the right to disagree about them. It would be wonderful if all comments could be made in such a manner as to provoke thought rather than to hurl insults. So before you type, be careful how you word your statements. Even if you are an idiot, you sure don't want to look like one, right?!

    Just my two cents.

Posted by: Two cents at February 28, 2006 3:44 AM

"Sikorsky and the union did have initial contact with each other to explore what opportunities there are to resume negotiations."
    - Bud Grebey, a Sikorsky spokesman

Sounds like they had a meeting to decide if there is a reason to have another meeting. I personally think that the company has already begun implementation of its contingency plan. There may be a new contract offered, but I bet it is designed with the intent that the union will vote it, too, down. I don't think the company wants the union back.

    Important Hartford Courant article:

"Nationally, family coverage now costs an average of $10,880 a year, nearly a quarter of the U.S. median income of $44,389 and more than the entire $10,712 annual pay of a minimum-wage worker. The report suggests that Connecticut can afford to do more: As a percentage of its total economy or state domestic product, Connecticut spends less on health care than every other state but Nevada, though its health premiums are among the nation's highest."

Today's papers report that yesterday's meeting was just to see if there is any reason to continue with negotiations, but ended with no committment to definitely restart negotiations. If the company was still planning to offer the same contract, then don't you think the outcome would have been a little more positive and there would be a re-vote this week? If I were a betting man, I would put everything I have on the company pulling the original contract offer off the table and replacing it with an even worse offer.

Washington State congressman Norm Dicks says the USS Seawolf and USS Connecticut will move to bases in the Puget Sound by next summer. Both are Seawolf-class submarines built at Electric Boat in the late 1990s.

A third Seawolf-class submarine, the Jimmy Carter, is scheduled to move to San Diego in either 2008 or 2009.

For those of you who seem to be highly misinformed. The union employees asked to give BACK the .31 cents an hour to sikorsky. They were will to give up bonuses and pay increases to cover it. Sikorsky said NO. They didn't want the employees to have the same decent health insuance they had in the past. SO - Who is the bad guy here? Not the union, they were willing to make up the costs. What is the real agenda with Sikorsky that they did not want the employees to cover the extra costs?

There's a lot of talk on here about some telling others to slow down and don't work so hard. Unfortunately, that's what unions breed. It's the same for any union. Non-union workers are held to different standards of performance because they don't have someone to fight their battles. They have to work and maintain a certain level, or they don't have a job - period. Unfortunately, union jobs are more protected. When new people come in, they are full of excitement and want to do their best. Over time that is squashed and the older workers who have learned to take advantage brainwash them and intimidate them into compliance. It's too bad because I believe you are a happier person if you are out there everyday doing your best and taking pride in your work and your accomplishments. Unions had a place in days gone by, but they have outlived their usefulness. Now they just poison workers.

There's a lot of talk on here about some telling others to slow down and don't work so hard. Unfortunately, that's what unions breed. It's the same for any union. They have to work and maintain a certain level, or they don't have a job - period. Unfortunately, union jobs are more protected. Look at it this way.

Gasoline costs $2+ a gallon today. No too long ago, you could get it for half the price. When prices rose, we all just put away a little more so we could still afford to buy it. We didn't "go on strike" and refuse to buy gas at the station in an attempt to bring prices down. We didn't whine that station owners were being unfair for charging more. We didn't insist that our employer pay us more because of it. We just paid the going rate, because there was nothing, short of using less fuel, that could change the situation.

How is that any different from the current health care issue?

Annoyed, the reason they said NO is because they want ONE set of plans to administer (the multi-tiered Cigna plan). The costs associated with administering another separate plan are significant. So while it's a matter of 31 cents to you, there are other costs associated with it that you (and I) are not aware of.

I just wanted to thank you for allowing me to get 15 hrs of PAID overtime when I usually get none. Please continue to be greedy and stay out, my Family is loving the extra pay. So when we come in this Saturday please yell loud because driving past you knowing that I am getting
1 1/2 times pay may make me a little distracted.

Well people, guess what they did now? The word on the street is that in addition to the incident below, guess what happened now???

Again this is just, the word on the street, don’t have any hard facts here. Feel free to comment my salary brothers & sisters.

As I received a termination letter recently, company policy no longer applies so I can BLOGG AWAY!

Someone who obtained a P.I.V. license from a bubble gum machine damaged an aircraft in the Military Hangar.

D.C.M.A. HAS THEM SHUT DOWN! I hope the Skipper doesn’t get sacked over this. If it’s true it’ll be a hell of a way to end an otherwise great military career.

OH WELL, You know what they say, "LIVE BY THE FINGER, DIE BY THE FINGER!" I can recall a time when our brothers had choppers stacked like cordwood, (ah ha, All Of The Good Hangar Stackers Are Outside Stacking Cordwood). Not as much as a scratch would get put on those choppers.

What I want to know is how can the do this they only had 4 birds in the hangar, & don’t tell me the place is banging them out. The assembly line is a ghost town, the salary workers that are there are demoralized, & don’t want to be there!

SCORE ANOTHER ONE FOR THE UNION! GOOOOOO TEAM
    UNION – 2
    COMPANY - 0

Does any one have any info on this is this for real? Did this actually happen or is this the teamsters propaganda mill on steroids? I found in another blogg:

How he was able to do that with out packing it into a smok’iN hole in the Ground I’ll never know. Posted by: No lines at March 1, 2006 7:23 AM

To all my fellow employees: Human resources is trying to get people to cross the picket lines and work. This is just a tactic to keep us all from collecting unemployment benefits. They may even try to decertify the UNION. SO WE MUST STAY STRONG AND NOT CRUMBLE. IF YOU NEED TO WORK, FIND WORK AT ANOTHER JOB. Remember, you have no contract and if you go back to work the Union can't help you, plus you could get FIRED!!!! Then you'd be in a total lose/lose situation. What will they pay you, what kind of coverage would you have, they are not going to make any guarantee's you be saved. SO DON"T DO IT!!! Reconsider your position. Your brothers and sisters will understand if you need to work else where. JUST DON'T CROSS THE LINE!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at March 1, 2006 11:22 AM

To Anonymous 11:22, or should I call you Misguided...

Human Resources doesn't care if you cross the picket line or not. The company doesn't care if you collect unemployment. They also don't care if you decertify. And you cannot be fired for resigning your union membership and going back to work. You might get blacklisted by the union - oooh! SCARY! - but you cannot get fired for that. The union will punish you for it, but the company cannot.

Everyone needs to do what is best for themselves, but most importantly, educate yourself with the facts before you do anything. Visit the NLRB website, unionfacts.com and the CT govt. site where the general statutes are listed. Do not be dragged down by union rhetoric, think and act for yourself.

Posted by: anonymous at March 1, 2006 2:36 PM

My Dear Teamster Brothers & Sisters, there is talk on the line regarding, Sikorsky human resources contacting our brothers & sisters to come back to work. I implore you to stand firm. Please do not go back without the benefit of a contract. Tell them you would love to come back, as soon as they get the contract issue resolved! If you go back you will have NO CHOICE in what your job is. This means that if they tell you to clean the lavatory, you have 2 choices, DO IT, or refuse & BE FIRED!

Like the lions, they will go for the most vulnerable first.

They are going to call the most recent hirers first. They will be calling you first as most of you are young & haven’t been around for 20 – 30 years to see THE STEADY EROSION OF BENEFITS THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE. They are also going to imply that this will be a good opportunity for advancement, friends of yours are going to come back… Don’t buy it. Ask them, “Why are you telling me about Jo Blow? Do you think I incapable of thinking for myself? That I may base my decision on what some one else is going to do? They may hang out that tempting promise of a raise or a leadman / leadlady position. Don’t be taken in by these lies!

I assure you that this strike too shall end. Weather or not the union prevails, you are going to end up working alongside your former union brothers & sisters. I assure you, you will find a very uncomfortable atmosphere upon our returning to work. No one will physically harm you, but you will be shunned to the point that you will wish they had. I was not around for the strike of 1960. I did not come aboard until 1979. That was 19 years after the united autoworkers strike. I can still remember the fingers being pointed at the scabs. They would come to the tool crib and everyone at the counter would leave, all of the tool crib employees would suddenly have to go to the lavatory. You will never break bread in the cafeteria with anyone but other scabs. I have a brother who is in management, HE told me not to dare cross the line. What happens is right now they need you & everyone on the inside will be nice to you. Once we come back to work your position on the balance sheet go from the asset column & into the liability column. HR will be a sympathetic ear, but they will be powerless to help you out with the negative interpersonal relationship that will exist between you & your coworkers. There is no law that will require others to be nice to you. Your foreman, (whom used to be on our side of the line), will pay you lip service, but will be powerless to help you if he wanted to. Eventually you will become a pain in the ass to him, & you will become a sad, frustrated person caught in the neither world of scabbsville.

In closing, I have not voted to accept every contract offered over the years. When the votes were counted, & results to accept the contract as offered passed, I went to work the next day, as did all others who voted to reject previous contracts. With that in mind, over 70% voted to reject this contract, we need your support as UNITED WE STAND DEVIDED WE FALL!

    ROCK ON BROTHERS & SISTERS!

Back to the 31 cents. It just doesn't make sense to me to strike over 31 cents an hour. By my estimates, you're losing a years worth of '31 cents' each week you're out of work.

Assuming you work 10 hours of overtime each week:

    31 cents x 55 hours a week = $17.05
    (40 hours + 10 hour of time and a half = 55 hours)

    $17.05 x 52 weeks = $886.60 a year

For you to lose $886.60 a week, that means your normal pay would have to be $1,116.60

    The Math:

    $1,116.60 (normal pay)
    - $230.00 (strike pay from union)
    --------------
$ 886.60 (lost wages each week)

If your normal pay was $1,116.60 a week at 50 hours, then your hourly rate would be $20.30 an hour. So, if you're making $20.30 an hour, each week you are out of work is costing you a years worth of '31 cents'. If you're making more than $20.30 and hour, the loss is even greater.

I think most employees that are on the picket line make $20.30 or more an hour, so I think it's safe to say that you are losing a years worth of 31 cents each week. With that in mind, if this strike goes on for a month, you have instantly lost 4 years worth of the '31 cents'.

If you guys are allowed to get unemployment, which I personally think you deserve based on Sikorsky's lock out of all hourly employees, then the math changes considerably but still doesn't make much sense. Take a look.

If you are still earning $20.30 an hour and working 50 hours a week as in my previous example:

    $1,116.60 (normal pay)
    -$ 400.00 (unemployment)
-$ 230.00 (strike pay from union)
    --------------
$ 486.60 (lost wages each week)

    $486.60 x 2 weeks = $973.20

Even with unemployment and a conservative $20.30 an hour, you're losing more than a years worth of '31 cents' every two weeks.

If you're making $27.57 an hour or more, you're losing a years worth in one week even with $400 of unemployment income (assuming you're allowed to collect).

I just don't get it. This can't be the reason for the strike. It just doesn't make sense.

"How many people would kill to have our jobs?
    We need...

Your question should have been, How many people WILL BE KILLED BEFORE WE have our jobs BACK?

That is an answer I do not have, in 1996 it was 4. You may recall good old Irwin. While he was killing off inspection, KAYDON burned. (Totally off the subject here, but did not someone once say something like that about Julius Ceasar?)

Sikorsky's senior stable of MBAs suffers from a lack of healthy fear that aviation presents on a continuing basis. Aviation doesn't suffer fools lightly. Aviation doesn't care if you’re an hourly or salary employee. If you mess up it will be reported on the obituary page. The sad part is that the name on the obituary page is usually not the person who created the situation that leads to a disaster. That's how it went down in May of 1996!

One of good old Irwin’s fellow VP’s, (the last of a breed that came up through the ranks & knew how an aircraft was built referred to him as, “Irwin, you ??? bastard!
As I am not an anti-Semite I will let you fill in the blank. I’ll give you a hint, 3 letter word, first letter follows I in the alphabet, last letter is a W.
