Creatures of the Night
IN THE ARMY they would be called grunts. An absolute necessity in the 24/7 culture at SIK. The real night shifters — the third-shifters. When most of humanity zigs, they zag.
It is the land of the two jobbers and/or kid sitters. For the pleasure of hit and miss sleep, 3:30 am lunches and the overall dysfunction they only have to be here six and a half hours. In essence — based on six days — work 39 hours and get paid for 52. Not bad.
The cult of night creatures from my department mostly maintains the picket line from 10PM to 2AM. Only a handful of cars even pass them. But they are there night after night.
Ribs, chicken, Roseland Seafood pie — I would bet they have made the most of a bad situation. Thursdays rally will probably send legions of this impassioned bunch into the place when they are seldom seen: HIGH NOON.
Did they chase, i.e. purchase, the COBRA? No
Did they find other ways to make money? Some
Do they stand strong? Yes

My question is this: With the number of those crossing the picket line expected to be in the hundreds by the end of this week/early next week, where on earth is Rocco and all his hardliners going to find that many horse heads?! Watch out wall of shamers... you may be sleeping with the fishes soon!
Geez, what a freaking circus act this has become. Union people have become such easy targets it's just not sporting to give them a hard time anymore.

Q: Why do all the strikers walk in a clockwise circle?
A: It reminds them of a toilet flushing, flushing good jobs down the drain.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 4:37 PM
Contrary to what your union would have you believe, you most certainly CAN be terminated if this is ruled an economic strike. It would have been more accurate had your union advised you that you may or may not be terminated, depending upon what happens with the charges the union filed with the NLRB. (Assuming they DID file charges and this was not just a propaganda tool.)

When Hoffa shows up this week, I hope everyone else does not. That will send a message to the the Union that we want to go back to work and are willing to leave the Union to do so. I personally know of 15 people who are going to give the Union until the 17th of March to say they are going to bring the contract back to the table for a re-vote. If this does not happen, letters of resignation are going to the Union registered mail and back to work we will go. I wonder when Rocco and the boys are going to get their heads out of the sand? Storms a brewin boys and it is now with the members...believe it!!

I have not supported this union strike at all, but I do totally support anyone and everyone who renounces their union membership in support of their families and their company. What with all the juvenile peer pressure, it must be very hard to take that stand, but kudos to those who have flung off the union blinders and are acting in their own best interests. God speed!

"You'll lose your house and cars!"
"Your kids will starve!"
"Resign from the Union!"
Why don't you union bashers think up some new material. HANG TOUGH TEAMSTERS!!!

If you look at the charges that have been filed by the union with the NLRB, it looks like they have pulled them out of their ass. From the research I have done it looks like it will be deemed an economic strike make each and every one of us legally repaceable. For anyone that knows how to use the internet look up what the charges are and NLRB regulations. Find your own information because Rocco is going to mislead you like he always has.
The most simple example is the charge of withholding vacation pay.
Under our contract that has just expired, the vacation pay is only covered up to 2005. Look in your contract, it is there in black and white. It just shows Rocco is pulling whatever he can out of his ass to try to get a charge to stick. If he can't get one to stick it will be an economic strike instead of an unfair labor practice strike.
Next, why is Rocco in hiding? He wont talk to anyone in person or on the phone? My guess is he is getting scared? I really dont blame him. He is becoming one of the most hated person in CT right now. Call him he wont be there. They will probably lie and say he is on the pickit line. What a little bitch.

DAILY UPDATE: 3-6-06 9:30am
Day 15 of the strike. Picketing continues at all facilities. The company and the union have not resumed negotiations, nor have they scheduled any further talks. However, the union continues every effort to get the company to return to the bargaining table.
Dispelling some rumors: The company will not be sending you a letter this week telling you to return to work or be terminated. This is a violation of the law. The company has not hired thousands of replacement workers. And if they did, those people cannot do the work that you do. You know how hard it is to build these machines correctly, even with our vast experience. No one off the street could even begin to do the work.
The company has begun contacting members, asking them to return. This is a clear indication that the work is not getting done inside and that the strike is taking its toll on the company. This activity on the company's part was expected, but not for several more weeks, indicating that they are in a panic already. Only a handful of members have abandoned us and succumbed (see the wall of shame). Now is the time to remain strong! The salary workers inside are beginning to crack. They are fighting with one another, becoming discontented with the hours that the company is working them. Things are not good on the inside, by all reports.
Don't forget that Teamsters General President James Hoffa will be here on March 9th (if we are still on strike) to lead a rally, along with Connecticut politicians and other union leaders, in front of the Sikorsky Stratford plant. The rally will take place at 12:00 Noon.
Please continue to visit this page for daily updates and important information related to the strike.
STAY STRONG, STAY UNITED... TOGETHER WE CANNOT LOSE!

Question:
Does Rocco get strike pay or his regular pay?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 5:46 PM
Taken directly from the NLRB website (www.nlrb.gov)- definition of an economic strike...
If the object of a strike is to obtain from the employer some economic concession such as higher wages, shorter hours, or better working conditions, the striking employees are called economic strikers. They retain their status as employees and cannot be discharged, but they can be replaced by their employer. If the employer has hired bona fide permanent replacements who are filling the jobs of the economic strikers when the strikers apply unconditionally to go back to work, the strikers are not entitled to reinstatement at that time. However, if the strikers do not obtain regular and substantially equivalent employment, they are entitled to be recalled to jobs for which they are qualified when openings in such jobs occur if they, or their bargaining representative, have made an unconditional request for their reinstatement.

Unions what good are they? Let’s see, they collect money from you to represent you to make sure you are getting all that you deserve. (Or what you think you deserve) Then they brainwash you into saying that the big companies can just keep paying more and more out per employee and you shouldn’t have to ever pay more for your benefits. So you go out on strike to show big business they are serious. Now you can’t afford to pay your bills while the labor bosses, labor lawyers, and labor lobbyists are eating out tonight. I have received a raise from the company I work for every year (avg. 4%) also a yearly bonus (this year 22% or base pay) stock options, profit sharing and yes I do have to pay for my health insurance like 95% of the working class. Oh by the way I didn’t have to pay anyone to get that for me. Most companies know happy and compensated workers make them money so they pass that on to their employees. The company I work for has had the unions come in and try to get us to cross over, but each time we all have said “why would we do that, I have vowed if we ever went union that would be the last day I work for them. Unions had a purpose 50 to 60 years ago but now they are just a company within themselves causing businesses to close doors in the US and go else where. Last time I did a sanity check if went to school learned a trade you could expect to be compensated for what your experience level was, not what in your mind thinks you deserve. Wake up and go back to work, you have a good job, good pay, and if you now have to pay more for your benefits tough. Don’t like it quit and go somewhere else.

Here is an honest question looking for a reasonable answer.....
How many employees have to resign from the union before it becomes powerless??
Also, does anyone know how many agency members there were before the strike began?
God bless us all, each and every one.....

For the people saying HR is calling people asking them to comeback.......
Don't think so, there phone hasn't stopped ringing in a week.
The reason more people have not returned yet is due to the amount of time involved in processing each employee for return.
The is HR paperwork, plus each employee has to be cleared by medical.
If you know how many people work in medical now, you know how long it would take to process a 100 people or so..
Just tell the truth, I know its not as interesting, but why makes likes?

I have received two calls from HR asking me to come back. So don't say they are not calling anyone if you don't know the facts. Maybe they are calling me because I have the skills they need on the inside right now to start up more areas. With my experience inside I would be a good asset to the company. I can work in many different areas and train people to do these jobs. Maybe I am special and that is why they called me. I don't think I am so special but I do think they are calling the good employees that will come in and give it their all.

I find it quite amusing that they hand you a paper with the phone numbers of utilities and others to help with paying bills but I didn't see anything to help postpone my dues or anything. I think I will bring some KY with me next time I go back down cause it is starting to hurt.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 6:06 PM
As a retired Sikorsky employee and concerned observer of this unfortunate strike, I hope that you, the strikers, try to understand that both sides of your picket line have a common "enemy" that you should be "fighting" together, rather than each other. That enemy is our BROKEN NATIONAL HEALTH CARE SYSYEM. You will then understand that we have reached the point in this country where neither companys nor employees (both hourly and salary) can continue to absorb the rising cost of this broken health care system.
Unfortunately, those with the power to fix the system are state and federal government employees, who only have to raise your taxes to pay their rising health care costs !!!!!
I agree that a rally should be held and it should be as big and loud as you can make it. However, it should not be held in Stratford ,it should be held in Hartford and Washington, where our elected officials will hear your voices and do the job that they are paid (a hell of a lot more than you are) to do.

But salary workers are cracking up all through the Sikorsky offices between the hours of 11-1pm as we all read this post, and we see how some people still say, "Stand tall, together we can't lose"
Get a grip, you've already lost, be smart, don't lose it all!
We need some of you, come back, there is no denial here we need 25% of the Teamsters... all you hard working Teamsters, come back, and shut the door once you come in, we don't want the other 75%.

If you resign from the union this is what you lose:
If you resign, what rights will you lose? You will not lose any rights under the collective bargaining agreement, for example, seniority. The union must represent you fairly in bargaining and grievance handling whether you are a member or not. You will lose any rights under the union's constitution which are available only to members, such as voting in union elections and on ratification of the collective bargaining agreement. You may also lose your right to continue in any union pension plans, but not pension plans funded partly or completely your employer under the collective bargaining agreement.
That is taken from the National Right to Work Foundation website.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 6:16 PM
Look, this has been a lost cause from the begining. The company is not going to cave in on health care. They want One policy for everybody, that's it, final. This union picked the wrong issue to fight and they have and are misleading the membership about it. It's time for this membership to Wake Up and take a good long look at what this union is doing TO you, not For you.
I think you need a 30% vote against the union to start to disolve it, not sure tho

Brothers and Sisters: As our struggle continues we must remain together and strong. The company
has made several moves over the last few days that indicate very strongly that they are suffering the
affects of this strike. Do not fall into the trap! If you cross the picket line you are an at-will employee
and can be terminated or disciplined at any time. You are not entitled to work under a contract. You
will be forced to withdraw from the union. If you think that the company will treat you fairly, talk to your
friends in the salary ranks who are in there doing the work. They are working 12-hours a day, 6-days
a week and received NO overtime pay! The salaried workers are angry about the way they are being
treated. You will not be treated well. You will work for a fraction of your pay with NO INSURANCE! Go work for Home Depot at least you'll get some insurance.
The company has a right to hire temporary replacements only. The National Labor Relations Act says that when the strike is over the striking workers are entitled to have their jobs back. The company cannot terminate you.

I hate like hell to burst your bubble, but salary people are getting paid 15 hours of overtime to do our work. Your $232 is not getting me anywhere. Just got oil delivered, Rocco. $320. I'm a little short. Can you help me out? I didn't think so! I want my "F" job back very soon. Bet, I'm not alone! You will lose the troups very shortly, if you do not do something to turn this around. I am trying to be loyal, but my bank account tells me to defect. It's in your hands. Hope you realize that I am not alone. Do you really want this union dissolved. I don't

To the ex marines picketing,
Your brothers and sisters have died on the battlefield so I can have the freedom to choose to do anything I want, like go to work. I ask you WHY ARE YOU TRING TO TAKE THIS FREEDOM AWAY FROM ME, AND I WOULD ADD IN AN ABUSING, DISCUSTING, AND THREATENING MANNOR.

Second day back was just as good as the first. 10 to 12 hour days, medical insurance, green bagde and a great welcome from the salary employees. It is just a shame to see all the outsourcing going on my guess is a layoff when all is said and done.

READ BELOW:
JOBS WILL GO GOODBYE:

Unions were made to protect the weak, those who were abused by labor.
How are you being abused with your $1250 per week job, 401K, college savings in the bank for your kids....not to mention the mortgage the company has paid on your house the last twenty years and the food and cloths your family has gotten.
Get a Clue!
Have fun at your STRIKE PARTY..the public does see your priorities.
P.S. Should you be at a party on strike or pay those high oil bills....
P.S.S Don't worry about the managers...They have many more weeks before they will get tired of making all the extra cash that they don't normally get.

I hear you strikers are being told if you go back it will be as a yellow badge, you'll be paid $14 and hour and then when people come back they will be fired. Don't believe the chatter in the union hall - call your HR rep.

Dont be fooled by the union comments that the salary personnel are cracking. I witnessed terrific cooperation with each other and DCMA personnel. The product will get delivered although maybe a little slow at first.

I have never worked at SAC but have been following this blog. In one posting earlier today there was some missinformation presented that could harm those wondering abouts their rights during this strike. YOU CAB BE PERMANENTLY REPLACED during an economic strike. It is only under an Unfair Labor Practices Strike that there is a guaranteed return right. In an economic strike the replacements get to keep their jobs. The only right the striker has is to wait for new openings - if any ever come available. Economic strikers do NOT have any rights to their old jobs. This is the law under the National Labor Relations Act. If this is a concern to you this can, and should, be confirmed by calling the NLRB. Whether or not you support the strike make sure you have good information before making the life impacting decisions you all now are facing.

The union in spewing their garbage about the company treating you like shit when you return without a contract. Use your brains folks, do you think the company is going to treat anyone like shit that is stepping up to the plate to help the company? The people that come back early will be treated better than most people that return after this B.S. strike is over. The company respects people that are able to think for themselves and each person that steps over the line to go to work is helping to ensure hourly and salary will continue having a job in the end.
I think the union is putting out more propraganda than anyone. This B.S. paper about how badly I will be treated if I return. The only thing the union has ever done for me is stop me from being promoted because someone with half of my abilities had more time. I think the time for the union to say bye-bye. I hope enough people cross that the company refuses to let the remaining strikers back in. I will take a salary job just to keep the union out for good.
Wasn't it the union the got promotions to be seniority based instead of merit based? I don't care if you have 30 years, if you are a P.O.S that does nothing you deserve nothing. Since this strike is going to be ruled economic instead of unfair labor practices the company has the chance to get rid of a majority of you. I hope everyone that has been sitting around for the last 5 years doing enough to just make it by really sits down and thinks how they may be out looking for a new job because you guys are not going to be wanted back.

Isn't it sad, that so many of us have worked our lifetime at Sikorsky's and we are going to be pig headed and throw it all away. If our union leaders aren't going to be smart enough to admit defeat, then the members need to stand together and do something about it! They should be ashamed of themselves for their bulling tactics. like this stupid "hall of Shame" Does anyone know anyone elses situation? I'd like to give them an Atta-boy!!!!!! With regard to the directional water flow in a toilet and it’s relation to the direction of walking strikers, there’s no relationship, however, the direction of a water flow in a toilet in the Northern Hemisphere is Counter Clockwise, not Clockwise. This is due to the Coriolis force.
The Coriolis force causes the air to rotate around a low pressure center in a cyclonic direction. Indeed, the term cyclonic not only means that the fluid (air or water) rotates in the same direction as the underlying Earth, but also that the rotation of the fluid is due to the rotation of the Earth. Thus, the air flowing around a hurricane spins counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the southern hemisphere (as does the Earth, itself). In both hemispheres, this rotation is deemed cyclonic. If the Earth did not rotate, the air would flow directly in towards the low pressure center, but on a spinning Earth, the Coriolis force causes that air to be deviated with the result that it travels around the low pressure center.

Are you kidding me? How many of you union supporters were in the military? How many of you have sons, daughters, or other loved ones fighting in the war? The only ones you are hurting are THEM! You are the individuals that support them every single day by keeping the most important aircraft flying...But all you are concerned about is a few extra bucks to help pay for your medical benefits. Be thankful you have them at all.
By the way, Sikorsky is not hurting. They are producing more every week the union is on strike; its great! Keep my fellow Marines and Sailors & Army and COast Gurad doing what they do best. The parts are being delivered, the new aircraft are being delivered...all while you stand out in the cold fighting a lost cause. Don't you realize how big UTC is? Of all the business units, there are enough employees to fill the holes.
And, you can be terminated. Don't let your "leaders" tell you different. I have never seen a bunch of greedy individuals before in my life. Had I known what type of people that were making/fixing the parts that are keeping my loved ones alive, I would have been ashamed.
And for all of the retired military walking the picket line, SHAME ON YOU!!!!!! Stop being so selfish and think of someone else rather than yourself.
Another FYI~ MANY of the salaried workers have either been in the military or down on the shop floor at one time or another so, don't think for one minute that they can't get the job done, because they are and KUDOS to them!!
Have fun freazing your a** off for a "good cause"

Right after I pick up my next strike check I will be giving my resignation letter to the union. Unless someone can tell me how to come up with $2500 by the end of the month I am done. I'll go babysit. Yeah right, not that kind of money in that. But work there is that kind of money so I will go there.
Stand stong!!! Yeah in what the cardboard box I will end up living in. My family's well being and my own is #1 to me and if any of you don't feel the same way you need a reality check. Where do you draw the line and go back to work without the unions blessing? Lose your house, car, wife, or anything else you own?
Fortunatly, my wife wouldn't leave me because we are broke and she supports whatever decision I make. But I will be damned if I am going to make her suffer and lose our home over what, staying loyal to a union that wont even answer question with a direct answer. I have asked questions and for an answer got a question back. The union likes to misinform its members to accomplish it's agenda. If anyone has any real common sense they would jump ship while they still can.

The post at 8:27 are all the people currently on the wall of shame webpage. I'm sure the union is having a hard time keeping it updated considering they are slow with everything else. How about those daily updates? I give all these people much respect because they know what is truely important to them.
The people I see there that I feel bad for are the H49xxx-H50xxx badge numbers. Chances are these people don't have 90 days in and it is probably the only way they are able to keep their jobs. Oh wait Rocco says we are not going back in until all are brought back. Looks like no one will be coming back then. If I was in charge of the company and I have a person with 60 days not come back when offeref, they would not be coming back when it is all over. Now Rocco wont let anyone go back unless all come back so it looks like there will be plenty of parking for a long time.

A sample union resignation letter is provided below.
[LETTER TO UNION: SEND BY CERTIFIED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED]
[your address]
[date]
[name and address of union]
[To the appropriate union officer (See your union constitution. For the Teamsters, for example, the letter must be addressed to the Secretary-Treasurer)]:
I hereby resign as a member of [name of union]. My resignation is effective immediately. I will continue to meet my lawful obligation of paying a representation fee to the union under its "union shop" or "agency shop" agreement with [name of employer].
Furthermore, I object to the collection and expenditure by the union of a fee for any purpose other than my pro rata share of the union's costs of collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance adjustment, as is my right under Communications Workers v. Beck, 487 U.S. 735 (1988). Pursuant to Teachers Local 1 v. Hudson, 475 U.S. 292 (1986), and Abrams v. Communications Workers, 59 F.3d 1373 (D.C. Cir. 1995), I request that you provide me with my procedural rights, including: reduction of my fees to an amount that includes only lawfully chargeable costs; notice of the calculation of that amount, verified by an independent certified public accountant; and notice of the procedure that you have adopted to hold my fees in an interest-bearing escrow account and give me an opportunity to challenge your calculation and have it reviewed by an impartial decisionmaker.
[If you pay dues by payroll deduction, include this paragraph: Accordingly, I also hereby notify you that I wish to authorize only the deduction of representation fees from my wages. If I am required to sign a new deduction authorization form to make that change, please provide me with the necessary form.]
Please reply promptly to my request. Any further collection or expenditure of dues or fees from me made without the procedural safeguards required by law will violate my rights under the National Labor Relations Act and/or U.S. Constitution.
Finally, please consider this objection to be permanent and continuing in nature.
Sincerely yours,
[name]
[If you include the paragraph on the change in your payroll deduction authorization, you should also send a copy of this letter to the payroll department of your employer.]

For anyone who wants to blame Sikorsky for higher taxes in Stratford, try to remember that Sikorsky IS the largest taxpayer in Stratford. Think of what would happen to Stratford, if Sikorsky relocated most of the manufacturing to a more friendly state. I think we can all agree on how bad of thing that would be for Stratford.
Now, let's all get back to work.

Lets go back to the company after Hoffa comes and goes and make a new contract and re vote. Nobody was ready for this. No one realized it was gonna last more than a week. Sikorsky spent numerous amounts of cash to send the salary people to school for training. These people need to go back to work. All these people are gonna jump the line. It's only a matter of days. You aint here Rocco. You don't see these people. You don't hear these people. I am on the line everyday 10-2 (or even longer) and it is sad. How are you being abused with your $1250 per week job, 401K, overtime pay, college savings in the bank for your kids....not to mention the mortgage the company has paid on your house the last twenty years and the food and cloths your family has gotten.
Get a Clue!

If you have any questions or concerns as a
result of what you have read here, please

The dog and pony show that is about to take place this thursday will probably push the town of Stratford beyond its level of tolerance for this crap and... hopefully... break local 1150.
Go for it Rocco!!!

Because of the work and sacrifices of the union.

We moan when we have to work and we moan when we are out of work. Spoiled Americans.

Labor unions in America help workers fight for better lives and respect on the job. But with only 9% of the private-sector workforce belonging to a union, the vast majority of workers do not enjoy the benefits and protection of a union contract.
In the non-union workplace, companies can hire and fire workers "at will." That means they do not have to negotiate the terms of a firing or even offer an explanation. What's more, in non-union workplaces there are few options for workers to speak out against abusive management, unsafe working conditions, low wages, and lousy benefits.
Unfortunately, many workers in America labor in fear and just accept that nothing can be done to change the situation. And that, of course, is exactly how most employers prefer their workers: afraid, cowed, uncomplaining.
Although unions cannot solve all the problems workers face on the job, they are still the best way for workers to confront the disproportionate power of the boss.
But workers who do not have unions are not entirely defenseless either.
That is primarily due to federal labor and civil rights laws that unions and other activists have fought for and won in the last 100 years. These laws include:
* Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Sets the minimum wage, paid overtime and prohibits child labor
* Unemployment Insurance (UI): Provides benefits to some laid off workers
* Social Security Act: Provides a modest pension to workers over the age of 65
* Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act: Outlaws discrimination based on race, sex, religion, color or national origin by employers in hiring, firing, promotions, transfer and apprenticeships; enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
* Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA): Regulates pension and benefit plans to prevent fraud and abuse
* The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA): Mandates that U.S. employers provide safe and healthful workplaces
* The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): Provides unpaid protected leave for family and medical needs to qualified workers

How true is it that the same people that are telling us to stay strong have themselves had two stewards get into it and one ended up with a broken nose at the hall.
The thugs we elected as stewards also need to go with Rocco.
And lastly I was alking to my neighbor who is working inside Stratford and he stated that there is no decention other than the company has had numerous companies in to bid on work to take out. He stated that there is sweeping changes that have been done and that the work will not be coming back.
God help us all, we really screwed up.

The problem with this country is that there is no UNITY. It's always about "me and they were unfair to me". What ever happened to doing what is best for the greater good of man kind? People hate the Teamsters because they give us a choice. Salary workers are angry because they don't have a choice, but I bet if you put them in our shoes and put that contract in front of them they would have voted NO!!! Let the scabs cross, let those who desire to resign from the union. So what if a couple hundred people cross that picket line. That only means one thing, instead of walking 3600 strong we walk 3400 strong. I am proud to be a Teamster and proud to be a part of a group of people that are willing to fight for what they believe in.
Hang in there 1150!!!

As a Sikorsky employee I have been watching the strike coverage.
The real losers are the Union members who are not able to get the truth from the Company or the Union that represents them. I believe the Union was out foxed by the present management team. By striking the Union has left the henhouse wide open, all are lost to the FOX!
The Union was too smart for its own good, I truly believe striking was exactly what the company wanted.
Does anyone really think the upper management cares if your children starve?
Facts are facts corporate greed is an American way of life.
Lets face it, some years ago Sikorsky Aircraft began a cutural change. The company opened its Employee Scholarship Program so we may educate ourselves in any Degree program. As a hourly worker I saw the writing on the wall, and took advantage of this program.
If we survive this strike I hope many more will take advantage of the Education program and prepare themselves for the closing of our company.
I miss all of my friends and wish to take this time to say my heart is with you. Hopefully when all has passed you will understand that the salary employees had to go to work or they would be terminated.

What, exactly, is your strike over? The big bad company isn't being FAIR to us (wah wah). Never mind that the package you were offered is better than MANY MANY people in CT have. And then there is the "well look at what George David makes" comments - like that has anything to do with the price of beans. So what? That's what HE makes, and he ain't gonna give it to you. Unions are about outdated as the VCR. They are not needed anymore because new and better things have been developed to replace them.
Labor laws and OSHA replace the union as DVD has replaced the VCR.
Many people still own and use VCRs and Unions but these people need to stop living in the past. The VCR you own will get used less and less as time goes on, the same is true for unions. The labor issues they helped regulate are now regulated by laws. So go buy a DVD player and start using the laws meant to protect you instead of a union.

= $ 2,500,000.00 wkly saved hourly wages by company.
Yes they will toss a couple cookies and dollars the the salary folks...but it still comes to 10,000,000.00. THAT'S TEN Million in unpaid hourly wages over 4 weeks.

They amplified all of the negative aspects of the contract, and ignored the positives. How can you stand behind them anymore?
You were blessed with what SAC offered. You just see this ridiculous escalation in health care in much larger (3-year) steps. Look at what's going on around you. Look at the BIG picture. The union has lost its effectivity in shielding you from this... though they have done a pretty good job up until now. It was inevitable. The levees have breached... and SAC Is REALLY trying to hold back the flood (80/20 with a cap plus 1 year delay in implementation)

People, after reading the nonsense I cant help myself in writing an opinion from an ex salary engineer. Look, first off engineering will be a shell of itself within 5 years. They have reduced the airframe and propulsion staff to strictly basic data and offload. We , I mean the guys in stratford who use to do detail design now manage work from out of state. That bites the big one first off. Second, all the aircraft I supported were built almost entirely in Europe, i.e. S76 and most of S92. And in the next 5 years line workers will be reduced to final assemblers, thats it. Paint, airframe, even electrical all outsourced. Thats what you fools should be circling the wagons about. If I was still there I would be up front in the street with you. Because frankly your health benefits is petty at this point. I always had a 80/20 insurance plan before during and after working there. Its like any bill, you pay it and shut it. The top brass is enjoying you all turning this into a salary hourly circus. Thats sad. when i was there your each jealous of each other for all the wrong reasons. You choose to do what you do for a living for your own reasons, and if you allow someone to control yoour destiny than you are a fool. Just like big companies dont care who you are when times are tough during layoffs, and Ive been screwed by bigger companies than UTC, loyalty should be to yourself and your well being i.e. family. Not someone who speaks for you and tells you that your getting a raw deal. How do they know, union reps seem to know whats best for you, good, thats why you elect them, they get payed handsomly and when promotions are up you get dogged by some old timer who cant hold a hammer anymore but has 2 years more than you. That sucks! I like to think i control my own path so when allowing others with their best intrest in mind and not yours , beware. I aint bashing either side. UTC is following the big 3 GM, Ford and IBM with heealth care restructuring, its not like no one saw this coming. Wait till you see the retirement wave hit between now and the end of the year. All those who can retire will be b/c of loss of massive health benefits. UTC has the best benefits around, take advantage of them. The grass sure isnt greener elswhere.
Good Luck.

No question that there's dead wood on both sides. Hopefully that's what will be cut from the salaried ranks as needed. But on the hourly side, if someone is a useless POS but has seniority, mgmt. can't get rid of him/her. So a newer hourly person gets dumped, regardless of how good they are or how hard they work. Can anyone really tell me that's fair or right?

There are 29 on the wall of shame now and with how slow the union is that means threr are probably 50. If Rocco would make himself visable and informed the membership his plans I am sure less people would plan to cross. He decides to hide and anyone at the hall I have asked questions to answers me with a question. So I have decided I am going back because I need the money very badly and there is no end in sight so I will not wait another week without any information.
I kind of find it amusing the union sends the company a letter on March 2nd stating on March 3rd they will be at the Marriott waining to negotiate. If no one noticed this was only for show. Put yourself in the company's position and you have been telling Rocco to submit a proposal including the 80/20 insurance and then we will talk. He submits nothing to you other than a letter giving less than 24hrs notice to meet and negotiate. I wouldn't have shown up either, I'll be damned if I am going to have this idiot tell me to meet the next day to negotiate after telling him we needed a proposal first.
He is trying to make it look like the company wont negotiate and is trying to make himself look like the good guy. Well Rocco we are not that stupid, we can see through your show.
Now if he was trying to bargain in good faith he would have submitted a proposal on Monday and scheduled a time on Wednesday to sit down for negotiations. It is all a show. Don't anyone forget he works for us and not the other way around. Out with Rocco for the benefit of the 1150.

Don't worry guys, come to the cult, I mean union hall... Sikorsky is paying Carrie Greathart overtime this month so she can spread radical propoganda about sikorsky to trick you to come back.

I don't work at Sikorsky. But am tired of hearing you hourly people complain. If you want to point a finger and blame someone, remember you have three pointing back at yourself. Don't moan you have no money. This strike is no surprise. You make a good wage. You should have prepared to stick it out if you are going to support the brotherhood. Your all big boys and girls and you are responsible for YOUR OWN ACTIONS. You want a strike vote, be careful what you ask for, you got it! Don't blame anyone, you voted to walk.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 10:05 PM
There seems to be a lot of people in these blogs that have no back bone.
If you are going to bash the Teamsters 1150 and Rocco then at least state your name, other wise there is no merit to what you say.
I could say this about Rocco he is a stand up truthful person that will fight for you and your family long and hard. He is only acting out our wishes as the majority voted that health care was the most important.
If you think he has nothing to due with contracts and lobbying for work in Washington than you really don’t know how he works. Not only is Rocco a family man but he cares for each one of us on that strike line. He will listen to any offer Sikorsky and UTC can conjure up. The only problem is Sikorsky and UTC has no other offers.
If you think the Union does nothing for us than look at the salary employees of UTC and Sikorsky.

Based on what I have been reading on this blog over the last couple of weeks and how the news has been coving the strike, the union went into battle without a plan. When the General comes to rally the troops on Thursday, you need to ask your leadership only one tough question; “What is the next step if we don’t come out on top? The answer will tell you a lot about them. It’s a shame that a lot of good hourly works will be going down with the sinking ship. Today I saw one of the nicest Hourly people I know walking the line today and she didn’t look too happy. I hope she and others like her do alright after this is all over. They are good people who got caught in a bad situation.

I am so sorry for trying to run a company!
I should just pay everyone whatever they want, and hope George David sees it the way I see it, and he lets sorry old Sikorsky stay in UTC, even though we operate with a 1 billion dollar deficit.
Igor would you ever forgive me? I know how I can fix things, I'll send the plant back to Igor's homeland, Russia, then I can pay 10 workers what I pay 1 now, and everyone will be happy, because 10000 previously poor RUssians will now be able to feed their family.

From being on the line, I can say that the only good thing that will come out of this and all veteran enginners have been saying this for years: sikorsky should have a rotation of young nearly hired designers to work the line and understand what they are designing. This will ead to less errors in the designs and more understanding of the product they are working on. As far as putting up staggering production numbers, I dont think thats their intent right now, obviously they are jump starting the offload process we were told would happen later right now. thats the freaky part of this whole S. Finger philoshpy. God help us!

Posted by: Anonymous at March 7, 2006 10:15 PM
Your union propoganda is so backwards...
You are right, engineering is getting behind, it's a no brainer... one engineer on the floor = one engineer not doing engineering work
but you know what else?
2 engineers on floor = 7 teamsters on floor (1 works, 2 kind of work, 1 smokes, 2 sleep and 1 keeps an eye out for the super)
I hate to tell you, but a lot of engineers, especially the newbies love being on the floor.
We've been asking to get on the floor, but they say we can't do floor work with the union there, or they will cry and cry and cry.
You saps fell right into Sikorsky's trap, now they can get rid of the union in a few years, and let engineers do the building and designing... it's a lot more efficient that way.
and again, i hope to see the minority of TEamsters back on the floor, you guys got screwed by your union, and you are the BEST workers in this country at what you do. We're all pulling for you in here... just not your ugly half (Dead weight brothers)
