In Search of Answers
IN AN IMPASSIONED SPEECH along the lines of Martin Luther King or General George Patton, Harvey Jackson told SIK at the rally Thursday:
"Our time has come, Sikorsky Aircraft, your time has come..."
Great speech Harv, but the opinion of the vast majority of the strikers I have talked with, "our" time will be here on Wednesday at the planned membership meeting.
The following three questions, all of which you and your staff have heard in one way or another, are on the minds of many strikers.
What is the story on unemployment compensation?
Is the Union willing to concede the 80/20 and improve other areas of the original contract?
Can replacement workers take our jobs once the strike is settled?
The strikers need answers, otherwise expect to hear from the crowd that nasty six letter word ...R-E-V-O-T-E.
And yes, we know there is no contract to vote on right now.

Frank, the leadman from machine shop 2nd shift, has Crossed the line!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:26 AM
Freddy Rocco, the parts chaser on 2nd shift that never smiles (and has been here for 32 years) has Crossed the line!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:27 AM
John Palyo, the guy on 2nd shift 1250 Processing (across from Shot Peen) has Crossed the line!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:29 AM
If you guys are going to continue to roll out peoples names, you should at least have the balls to put your own up there.
If these guys did in fact cross then they probably need to take care of their families, there is no shame in that.
If someone of 32 years crossed, that should tell you something, it's not worth it.

1150 leaders, its obvious the co. isnt budging on healthcare. we need to get back to the table. maybe we bang them on pension and hourly wages. and get our membership back to work. dont let ego get in the way. all these unions backing us have paychecks coming in to support their families. if either one of you guys would stray from your circle and ask union members opinions i feel it would open your eyes. we cant fight for the whole country on the healthcare system. all lot of good people are sinking financially, and trying to hold on. not taking anything away from what you guys have done. in my 27 years at sik you are by far the best team we have had. But take care of your membership and get us back to work where we need to be. the national and the polititions need to fix healthcare. we are not all in the same financial positions for whatever reasons. time to put ego aside and get us to work. that is what the majority needs. if we upped the pension and annual increases a bit a revote would ratify the contract. and we would have at least gained something.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:33 AM
I am the wife of a SIK worker. I feel that you guys have made a big mistake going on strike. This is a bad economy for everyone. The rising cost of healthcare is not the problem of the company. SIK workers are very spoiled and feel that the company owes you something. Well they don't. They are a good company that offers very good wages, benefits, and some stability. I work for an insurance company and I was offered very similiar benefits to what you guys were offered and at about the same cost. The union has misled you to not sign the contract when in the real world that was a very good contract. I don't get a sign on bonus, 3.5% raise every year. You guys all think that you are not replaceable but you are. If you don't go back to work soon you will all be working for $10-$15 on hour with higher healthcare costs, if you are even likely to get a job. SO STOP LISENING TO THE UNION AND GO BACK TO WORK.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:34 AM
obviously, these guys that crossed the line have no contract to work with. They have no medical and they only are making money, a little more than 232 but they are making money. That's it!!! I hope that when all of us come back...that these guys better realize what they did. You lost your friends guys. You can't be trusted no more!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:34 AM
Yes, Harvey and all the E boarders, I am proud of the way you guys are trying, but we as memebrs need answers, not estimates of whats going on. If we can not win this fight, lets move on, get an upgrade somewheres else, and get back to work, and when that day comes, we as paying maembers of 1150, NEED to know whats going on with outsourcing, definitive answers also, not the run around!

Obviously your an ass!
If you can sit here and say these guys have lost their friends because they want to support their families, then that's what you have to be.
With friends like that, who needs brothers and sisters from the union?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:38 AM
Health care i s huge thing right now for everyone not just SIKORSKY.Your turning down a sign on bonus and raises...hmmmmmm where's your priorities now? sitting home collecting a $232 check? lol...must be the life
Posted by: Chrissie at March 11, 2006 11:38 AM
You will not win on the healthcare issue....just remember that sik is way bigger than local 1150. sik wants good workers willing to work and you are showing them the opposite....tell Rocco you want to sign the contract (as is) and go back to work........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:42 AM
Nice Point wifey!!! This IS NOT a Sikorsky only problem. It is the whole U.S.A. We should re-vote on a new contract. Rocco and 1150...if you are reading this....Go talk to the Company. Go see if wages can be tinkered with or contributions can be played with or mess around with the deductible. Do something cause these people are getting ancy!! We all know that the country already has 80 / 20...thats fine. Its the wekly payments or wages that need to be fixed. See what you can do. I know you guys know something...we just hate waiting to find out what? Go talk to Sikorsky. We all need to go back to work. This is getting to be boring. We made the point. Hoffa spoke his words. Now...go talk with the Right people. I am tired of people saying we have it made here. Big deal...we get paid good money. We don't build toasters here. We build Aircraft. Peoples lives are in our hands everyday. This is why we make the big bucks. But if the company wants us to fork over what we made for them...this aint fair. You have new leaders in office now Rocco. Go see if they will talk to you like grown men instead of a bunch of sissys that only think of themselves. We're counting on ya...Good luck
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:43 AM
Any one who returns to work is paid the wages as to when you all left. As for beefits they recieve the same as when they left. The new contract when it is ratified still has the old med benny's till Jan 07.
Smarten up and stop the BS

i cant support my family on 232.00 a week. oh yeah minus 58.00 union dues. and please dont say get another job. g david already said that.do what is in the members best interest. forget impressing Hoffa. he gets paid. get us back to work. we have heard nothing about getting back to the table or even trying to since Hoffa and the other unions jumped on our backs. we are not sacrificial lambs. time to get us to work so we can support our families, which is all most of us want to do.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:48 AM
Hey Jeff Pino....It's your friend Mike. If you can read this...See what you can do for these people. I known ya for a long time and i don't think you are like the old President of that company. Give the people a break. listen to what they all have to say. I am getting tired of reading the paper and seeing the news about this strike. I know you're better than that. Prove it to them. See ya in July on the water!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:49 AM
Wife of sik worker. As I see things being on the outside...Rocco is running your lives. Everytime my husband talks to anyone in the union they tell him the same thing....Just hold on we will win this fight. How does Rocco think he is going to win against a multi billion dollar company. The company is not budging on the healthcare issue and as for you pay and raises the company is being very generous...I didn't get a raise for 2 years but this year I did and it was 2.5%....which only equated to about $900 for the year. so suck up the healthcare issue and GO BACK TO WORK!

Despite what you have been told this is an economic strike. Workers can be replaced permanently. There are tons of people out there who would love these jobs. Are you willing to bet your careers that the company will not replace workers? Information below taken from
http://www.nlrb.gov/nlrb/legal/manuals/rules/act.asp
Question
What are the Unfair Labor Practices of Employers?
Answer
The Act defines the following Unfair Labor Practices for Employers:
Section 8(a)(1)-Intereference with Section 7 Rights (the rights of employees guaranteed by the Act)
Section 8(a)(2)-Domination or Illegal Assistance and Support of a Labor Organization
Section 8(a)(3)-Discrimination Against Employees
Section 8(a)(4)-Discrimination for NLRB Activity
Section 8(a)(5)-Refusal to Bargain in Good Faith
Section 8(e)-Entering a Hot Cargo Agreement
What is an economic strike?
Question
What is an economic strike?
Answer
http://www.nlrb.gov/nlrb/shared_files/brochures/basicguide.asp#righttostrike
If the object of a strike is to obtain from the employer some economic concession such as higher wages, shorter hours, or better working conditions, the striking employees are called economic strikers. They retain their status as employees and cannot be discharged, but they can be replaced by their employer. If the employer has hired bona fide permanent replacements who are filling the jobs of the economic strikers when the strikers apply unconditionally to go back to work, the strikers are not entitled to reinstatement at that time. However, if the strikers do not obtain regular and substantially equivalent employment, they are entitled to be recalled to jobs for which they are qualified when openings in such jobs occur if they, or their bargaining representative, have made an unconditional request for their reinstatement.
How do I request a decertification election?
Question
How do I request a decertification election?
Answer
The Act contains a provision whereby employees or someone acting on their behalf can file a petition seeking an election to determine if the employees wish to retain the individual or labor organization currently acting as their bargaining representative, whether the representative has been certified or voluntarily recognized by the employer. This is called a decertification election.

So let me get this straight. You have all walked out on your jobs because you did not like the original contract that sikorsky offered you, you have lost thousands of dollars in pay, have had no health care or life insurance, have cost this town hundreds of thousands of dollars, have caused traffic jams, have hurt the businesses around you, have ruined many friendships with people that you have worked with for many years by spitting on their cars and yelling obsenities at them, have caused sikorsky to outsource many of your jobs so that you may find you no longer have a job when all this is done, and yet you are now yelling for a REVOTE of the SAME contract that you rejected in the first place??!! Hmmmmm, you are really showing them!!!
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:55 AM
Let's pass on the stirke issue for a moment,
In case anyone remembers, this weekend,
Sikorsky was suppose to support habitat for humanity.
Due to the strike, we had to back out of our commitment to donate our skills to the cause.
This is not an hourly vs salary issue as both workforces contribute to the cause.
Imagine, an honest needy family, depending on our help has been let down.
This is the first time in years that I can say Sikorsky has not supported this event.
All I can say to the bridgeport chapter of H4H is that I'm sorry. Hopefully in the future we will be able to continue our support.

Do Your Homework First
Its obvious from reading this board and the news details of this strike that neither the union leadership or its members did their homework before voting to strike and this is reflected in this latest Walk the Line segment.
Unemployment: Simple research shows the law to be very clear. Strikers are not entitled to unemployment unless the job action is ruled a lockout. That people are crossing the line to return to work repudiates that. That anyone would vote to strike anticipating they would get unemployment pay was foolish....if the union leadership spread that idea, it was irresponsible.
Permanent Replacements: Read the NLRB labor laws on this. The Union will not decide whether you can or cannot be permanently replaced, but will be the result of government interpretation whether the company acted in good faith in its mediations prior to bringing in replacements. Do the research...then decide for yourselves.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT: The biggest mistake I see happening here by the union and its members is to continue to view this as a strike against Sikrosky, rather than a strike against UTC. If you had researched UTC before you went on strike, you would have known that the entire company has the 80/20 plan you went on strike against, and that there's no way they would offer something different with other, much larger, companies having contracts forthcoming.
Also, check out what UTC's history has been with strikes since George David has taken over. In every case I am aware of, the company has held firm and the strike has ended with the return to work of the work force at the same, or less, than what was offered to begin with.
This entire episodes reads like the story of someone who foolishly picks a fight with what they think is a poorly equiped opponent, and then finds out too late that they are dealing with a more heavily armed and dangerous foe.

I would like to point out, for anyone hoping Jeff Pino will be a pushover, that one of his first acts as Sik president was to order up permanent replacement workers.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 12:26 PM
At the risk of continuing to repeat myself, I'd like to remind you that when next you vote, it may not be on the same contract you rejected on 2/19. That contract is no longer on the table. You can only hope you get as good an offer on your next vote. Start thinking about how you will vote if the 80/20 stays and the ratification bonus and annual increases go. This is a very real possibility. I don't think you can seriously expect the company to pay you a bonus for ratifying a contract that you rejected once. You can't hurt the company like that and then expect them to continue handing you cash like it's nothing.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 12:33 PM
Respect and welcome home to the guys who made the tough decision...and to the many others that the "wall of shame" is not admitting to because it would be an admission of failure. These guys have chosen to honor their responsibility to their families and their personal obligations which take priority over blind suicidal allegiance to this "brotherhood" which has done them such a disservice.

Wow healthcare......the dumbest reason to strike over something that is going to benefit us. Remember, UTC doesn't have to offer us this benefit at such a good plan!

What is the story on unemployment compensation?
Can someone expalin what this question meant? You don't really think you will be compensated for time lost during the strike, do you?
Posted by: joe b at March 11, 2006 1:15 PM
According to the NLRB, it's an economic strike, so the answer is no.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:19 PM
It is now obvious to everyone that the company is not going to budge on the healthcare plan. Alright... so let's work around it. Agree to eat healthcare plan and get back to negotiations on the rest of the contract. Maybe a larger increase to the pension or larger signing bonus or general increase to offset the increased cost of the healthcare package. BOTH sides have to be willing to make compromises and concessions.

I'm a salary worker who just returned home from the plant, and in the mail was my paycheck. For you union memebers I just want to say thanks for the overtime. With the extra, I'll take my kids and grand kids to Outback toninght for dinner,,,Thanks again. Just compare it to the $232 you are getting(min us taxes--180+)you may be able to get a couple of hot dogs for your night out, if that. End this and come back to work..

Serious question to Strikers:
If the company came back with a 90/10 plan with a lesser pay deduction increase
and
No signing bonus
and
3.0 % raises
would that be acceptable????
Posted by: joe b at March 11, 2006 1:23 PM
In answer to the question posted by joe b at 1:15:
Many of these strikers thought that they would be eligible for unemployment compensation, but because the company opened its doors to anyone who wanted to come back, they are not eligible. Something that the union failed to explain to its members! Score one for Sikorsky!!!

Let's see.....SIK has no current offer on the table. If that continues to be the case, then the strike will obviously continue. As the strike continues, more and more Teamsters will submit the union resignations, and return to work. So if SIK just continues to hold out, they will eventually get most of the workers back without the union. Am I being naive here, or is this a SLAM DUNK for SIK?

I just came from a meeting of fellow salary workers, and we all agree we are tired of being used as pawns in this labor dispute between the Union and UTC.
We would like to ask all of our salary workers, from all UTC divisions that are working in Sikorsky, to take Wednesday March 15, 2006 off, to force the two sides together.
If we all just take off one day, hopefully we can go back to our normal work life.

Could THEY have wanted this Strike to happen?
Do they need excuses as to Why their contracts with Gov are not being met?
So many questions...
Just stop bashing each other you salary people..its not nice! Just do your Job and Keep quiet like UTC.
The hourly workers probaly won't win this national health care battle, AT LEAST they tried and sacrificed!
Chicken Hourly Workers! See now ya did it, you made me get nasty... Lets see how many of you have your 'family' salary jobs at SIK when they re-vamp, re-organized after all this is oveare
I think the SIK union workers should go get other Jobs. Screw UTC. Do you really think there is no jobs out there? Alot already have 2 & 3rd jobs in addition to SIK already......
Put the word out: Sik union workers seeking jobs
(Play like UTC and look elsewhere) Its all over, UTC ruined moral of a great group of quality skilled workers. Any one want to hire them?

Actually Sikorsky is a great place to work. My husband has worked there for over 20 years and has been happy and loves his job. My father worked there as well, and also loved his job. It is the union that is causing all these problems, not sikorsky. They offered a very fair contract, but some people are greedy and others are intimidated and can't think for themselves, so Sikorsky and many others have to suffer.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:43 PM
Not every division of Sikorsky is on the 80/20 plan and paying $50-75/week for healthcare.
MEDICAL COVERAGE
You can select either a preferred provider program (PPO- no restrictions on provider selection) or an Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Both are sponsored by Blue Cross, one of the largest healthcare providers in the US. The charge for employee-only coverage under the HMO plan is $1.00/mo. and $9.00/mo. for the PPO. You can elect to cover your eligible dependents under either plan for an additional monthly charge. Vision benefits are available under the HMO and prescription drug benefits are available under both plans. Dental coverage is also available under both plans as an additional cost option through Delta Dental. Enrollment is 30 days after hire.

Serious response to Joe B.,
Moving the same amount of money around to allow for a 90/10 plan would work for me. I am very satisfied with my current hourly wage. Most hourly folks are. The signing bonus is not a big issue either.
A survey of union members took place months before the strike, at which point it was indicated that the top priorities were as follows...
1) Healthcare
2) Pension
3) Wages
I would even give up the general increase all together if it included lower costs for the cost of prescription drugs. For me, not having to worry about astronomical bills in the event of illness or injury is more improtant than wage.
There is plenty of room to work on the contract. But, it's not going to happen if the "Mexican standoff" continues.
Thanks for posting a great question!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:46 PM
If you return to work you will receive the same benefits that you received in the old contract, and you go back to the pay you received before the strike. You also get free lunch (yes FREE lunch, on the company) every day.

I wanted to repost my comment/question from the previous days blog before posting my new one for today:
It has taken me quite a while to plod through this blog, the photos from the lines, and the audio slideshow, and finally thought I would start making a few comments and asking a few questions. My comment/question for this time has to do with:
http://www.teamsters1150.org/wall_of_shame.htm
The "Wall of Shame"?? Are you kidding me? The first time I read about it, I thought - no way, no present day organization would feel it necessary to belittle people that had decided striking was not for them, that they wanted or needed to go back to work.
What possible value does this list hold, other than as a coersion tactic to try to keep people in the rank and file, especially considering the other posts I would read... the ones that said the rest of the union now knows who they are and will, once they come back "make their lives a living hell".
Instead of this list, with graphics in the background of rats, and the line "The following are the names of people who have abandoned their fellow members and refuse to stand tall with the membership of Local 1150." right there in black and white, why don't you list instead those among you, or among anyone, willing to pay all the bills these people are trying to pay. That way they may not feel the desire/need to cross your lines. I read numerous times about how horrible these people are, but not one person saying "here, take my money to support yourself".
What if they voted to ratify the contract? Are they supposed to "stand tall" with you, use up all their resources for your cause?
Why don't they have the right to NOT stand tall with you if they disagree, WITHOUT the attempted coersion, and without the threats?
I read about how the 1150 is standing up for the little guy. What if the little guy wants to stand up for him or herself and go back to work. What right do you have to demand your right to do what you feel is right... strike, yet try to coerce others to do something they don't feel the desire to do?
It reeks of hypocrisy to me.
I dare you to take the high road and ask your leaders to remove that from the website and the picket lines. Until then, you have most certainly lost a lot of people's support, and even worse, their respect for you...

See, Joe B, assumes Im a Teamster, shows how ignorant he is, we can all see thru him now. I never said I was Teamster, maybe yes, maybe no, it really does not matter now does it? You dont work for Sikorsky, so you have no stake in this matter, except to show how stupid you are, and you have done a great job of it, I hope you are a publicist for your company, youd sure show them the way to bankruptcy! P.S.- does Burger King have publicists Joe B., or are you a trainee burger flipper, mad at Sikorsky for not hiring you...

Post of 1:43. Right On!!! That's exactly what I told my husband. Wouldn't you rather work for a company that cared about you for $20/hour than work for a company that thinks they can use you and treat you like dirt. Many of the strikers have worked there for over 20 years so what's the problem, now that their getting older and need healthcare their going to get rid of them all or just raise their rates. It sickens me that noone is placing any responsibility on the company for all of this. If the company didn't want the workers to go on strike they wouldn't have asked for such large contributions. I work for a small company and I pay $15/week for a family for the same plan that they are proposing. What is wrong with you people? Where are the Rosa Parks in this country???? Corporate Greed has got to stop. And according to the post above it isn't an economic strike. They aren't asking for more wages they are asking for more Healthcare. The company is refusing to Bargain in Good Faith so thanks for pointing that out...Admittedly they all had a great Healthcare plan for a long time and many still do and many don't. There is always somebody better off and somebody worse off but when does it end?????
The company has definitely behaved very poorly sending termination letters to spouses of the insured, this doesn't happen in most companies, not holding a meeting on the Friday before the vote and giving the employees detailed information on the new Healthcare package and then misrepresenting the employees salaries and package offered to the public. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE LIES. DO NOT HEAR THE THREATS. CONTINUE TO BE STRONG AND UNITED AND WE WILL WIN!
Do Teamsters really believe this Rhetoric?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:08 PM
When midnight Sunday comes, EVERYONE on the picket line is eligible to be FIRED. That's the LAW governing an economic strike. You've had your 21 days, you've had your so-called rally (1400 people, NOT 3600 union workers), so now it's time to "pay the piper" and find new jobs, because you won't be SIKORSKY employees anymore. Let your union find you new jobs if they can. They already have their salary paying jobs, you have nothing!!!.......and will get nothing!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:10 PM
anon 2:07, Id rather pick up my little paycheck with my head held high, unlike you, whatever you are, salary, scab, etc, so go get your big check, when we come back, well switch roles.

How come Union employees are not represented by a Labor Union?????
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:12 PM
Those workers who have crossed the picket line are now at the mercy of a company with NO mercy. And, the fact of the matter is that supervision despises their lack of loyalty and integrity just as much as the union does. The scabs have presented themselves as weak and easily intimidated and supervision will take full advantage of them. They are now "at will" employees and can be terminated or demoted at any time. True... There are labor laws. But, it would take a few thousand dollar retainer and years of litigation to resolve an improper termination suit.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:12 PM
To all the disgruntled salary workers?
Where are you??????
I hear it, but have yet to see it.
Since I have been deployed to Shelton over the last three weeks, moral is as high as it has ever been.
Supervisors can't say enough how peaceful it is to work with a group of employees who can act professional.
There hasn't been one case of "that's not my job" since the strike began.
With 15 years experience on the floor before making the jump to salary, I have the skills to do the work asked of me. So do all the men and women I am working with. Granted it seems like old timers day at Shea, but the work is getting done.
Someome really should enlighten the 300 or so hourly who are picketing the driveway at Shelton;
Management has taken back control of the floor. The days of calling union stewards because you don't want to work is over.
The product lines are being re-aligned for efficient flows. They are even instaling new work benches etc. for wif/when you guys come back.
Oh yeah one more thing,
for those who hid the tools, paper work, parts, attempts to sabatoge the testing equipment in the servo room;
When you get back take a look in the break room!
I have never seen so many coffee pots, toaster ovens, microwaves and refrigerators.
All of the appliances have been taken off the floor, gone for good.
Remember all the chairs you would get to sit in and do you work, trashed, stand up on the concrete now.
I also took the pride in packing up the bigest box of computer speakers I have ever seen.
Times are changing,

Y'all talk about being an "at-will" employee like it's a fate worse than death. Let me just disabuse you of that faulty notion right now. In an "at-will" environment, you don't work your ass off only to watch some old fart make off with the promotion and raise that YOU earned but HE got because he's been there longer. In an "at-will" environment, everyone works together as a team towards the good of the company and the company, in turn, pays out bonuses and other incentives based upon the success of that teamwork. You get to feel like you are a part of something, not like a freeloader. As an "at-will" employee, I make decisions about my life and my career based upon my situation, my family, my wants and needs, my relationships, etc. I don't have a bunch of illiterate thugs stealing my money and making decisions for me that are not in the best interests of me or my family. Yes, being an "at-will" employee means that you have to work hard and prove yourself, but what kind of man would I be if I didn't work hard to prove myself? Oh, yeah, I'd be a TEAMSTER.

Time for today's comment/question:
I have read multiple times how union workers would be willing to come back if they really were being offered the same package as the salary workers... that the salary workers are getting a better package (with a better pension plan I think it was). Whatever that better plan is supposed to be, are you sure you want to be the same as the salary? That would mean the same rules that they have for overtime would also apply to overtime for you. Are you ready to change that? If not, then please don't start saying you want the same setup they have.
In most cases they have also had to put forth large sums of money to get a college degree, before they would even be considered for a job. Hence, most of them have to deal with a major fanancial hardship that most nondegree people don't.
I am NOT saying they are better than those without a degree, I am simply saying that they had to have that before they could even seriously apply for a job. And yes, I know getting certifications and being acredited to do certain jobs also costs money, but is it even close to what a major 4 year degree costs?
I also understand that the jobs most of the union workers do are far more "physical", but do you really think the stresses the salary people go through in their jobs are really not as bad on them as yours? They may be different, but not better or worse.
There does seem to be an awful lot of assuming on both sides about what the others do or don't deal with. Well, maybe its time to stop bickering about that and just understand that the jobs are different. Each one has its ups and downs, but neither is any better or worse than the other.
If you, as a union member, are willing to actually take the same setup as a salary person, please stand up and be heard...

Something's not right here! I have read throughout this blog about the supposed chaos and dissention going on in the Local 1150 union.
Well, I just got back from picking up my check and the mood of the several hundred Teamsters patiently waiting in line was quite to the contrary. Every person I encountered was very upbeat and optimistic. No one was screaming for Rocco! No one was fighting! There was no riot! The members were all very pleasant and good natured.
Based on this, I think the predictions made in this blog of pandemonium ensuing at the March 15 membership meeting are ridiculous. I advise all members to attend.

Sik just announced it's hiring replacement workers. I think this war is over. From an outsider, I hope to benefit. I make $16.75 working in a factory. I will be the first in line for jobs in that factory. I will not require union backing to protect me because I actually work hard. They have great benefits and I hope to take advantage of the educational program SIK offers. If I get a 4$ raide, even to $20.75 i will be VERY happy!

Answer to 2:32--------If you know the law, you know the truth--you CAN be fired. what you've done is called a "voluntary walkout", and different rules apply for this compared to a strike. That makes you eligible to be FIRED, or don't you still understand. You can ONLY walk back in if you're still an employee, which many of you will not be.

I received a letter from SAC today (Sat. 3-11)
"BE A PART OF OUR FUTURE."
"COME BACK TO WORK."
"Your job at Sikorsky, your benefits, and your next paycheck are waiting."
"Maybe you are considering whether striking is the right answer or maybe you just want to get back to making the world's best helicopters."
"Sikorsky wants its own employees back on the job. And we'll welcome you back. If you want to return to work, call us at (203) 386-4966."

We would like to ask all of our salary workers, from all UTC divisions that are working in Sikorsky, to take Wednesday March 15, 2006 off, to force the two sides together.

We went on strike for a noneconomic reason which is health care if we went out for more pay they could permantly replace us right now they can hire temp replacements. You got to remember that the company unilaterly forced this health care package down our throats this was not negotiated or bargained for.All the members are asking for is to let us keep the medical that we have and we were willing to give up stuff from our economic portion of the contract to do this so this is why you won't be fired.

OK - Here is another point of view - You are on Day 21. Therefore almost 3 people per day, cross the line. Sikorsky only has to keep the strike going for 1180 days, and they will be union free.

I have read a lot of comments on this blog that I felt were probably a little off, some that I didn't think could be true and many that I know for a fact are outright lies. So I sat down here at my PC - at home and on my time, by the way - to try to dispell some of the many rumors and lies that are being posted about salaried people. But I realized that, sadly, it would be a lost cause. People, by and large, are going to believe what they want to believe. If you think we are walking around in the dark like idiots, cowering in the corners awaiting your return, well, that's just not happening. But if it helps you to think that, go ahead. If you think we are all going to get laid off if the company moves south, believe it if you want, but arrangements have been and are being made to transfer many of us. We will all keep our jobs, our current benefits and our pay, although we may be relocated or reassigned. Yes, many of you will return to work one day only to be laid off ten minutes after you walk through the door. I'm sorry, but it is true. If it helps you to call us bad names, then go ahead. We know who we are, we know who you are and we know the truth. We are not afraid of you, we do not hate you, although a great many of us pity a great many of you because we already know what the outcome of this strike will be and we are sorry that your decision will cause so much pain and hardship for so many. We understand and respect your fight, although some of us believe it was a battle that could never be won. I love my job and the great group of people I work with. I am proud to work for Sikorsky Aircraft. I know I do my job well and I can rest assured each night that I am giving it my all. I know, too, that I have welcomed back the hourly workers who chose to return and will continue to do so. Although it is part of my job to eliminate from my roster individuals who have not pulled their weight, have had attitude problems and who just are not good workers, I do take that part of my job seriously and it is with a heavy heart that I make the cuts I have to to make. It is a shame that this situation has escalated to the point that it has, but maybe Sikorsky and the Teamsters union should just "divorce," since they cannot reconcile their differences. Anyway, that's just my view. I don't hate anyone, I do think this is unfortunate. Good luck to us all.

Your not liking the health plan offered does not mean there is an unfair labor practice situation. The health plan is a part of the benefits package and benefits are part of each employee's overall COMPENSATION. This is, in fact, an economic strike. Now, if you are claiming unfair labor practice on the grounds that the company is refusing to bargain in good faith, be prepared to get struck down. They bargained with you for several months on the TOTAL PACKAGE. The NLRB will look at the big picture, not just the tiny issue of the medical plan. No talks have been scheduled and the union is continuing all efforts to get the company back to the bargaining table. The union has consistently stated its availability to negotiate.
Beware! The above statement taken from today's semi-daily update is the biggest lie you are hearing from your leadership. At Wednesday's meeting, ask them if they have provided the mediator with an offer that includes the 80/20 medical plan. If they have not, then they have not made every effort possible on your behalf. Get rid of this union before it gets rid of YOU.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 3:52 PM
Alfred Giarratano Jr - H48939 should be in a much better mood today than last night! He was boasting about abondoning his friends and coworkers and had insinuated that the union was covering up the actual number of scabs to avoid panicking the membership Today he got his wish and was included in the list!
Congratulations you pathetic loser!

Salary workers unite.

LMAO! As a salaried person, I just have to shake my head at this loser - obviously an hourly employee with no job and lots of time on his hands - trying to make people think salaried personnel want to unionize. Jesus, what a joke. Nah, we are smart enough to know that unions are death to employees and companies. Nice try, though!

To Anonymous at 4:03,
Rocco doesn't handle the website. Steve is working on it at this moment. If you can do it faster, maybe you should go down to the Hall and volunteer.
Why do you feel the need to publicly display your lack of character and dignity by using profanity in your post?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 4:12 PM
Nah, I don't think so. I'm not union and as a salaried employee, I make an excellent living. Granted, I'm not rich, but I can afford for my wife to stay home with our children while they are young. If I could, I would bust every union in existence in this country today. They've just totally destroyed so many good companies and ruined the lives of so many members. Don't believe me? Start in Pittsburgh and start driving south along the Ohio River and tell me what you see. A whole big bunch of NOTHING. Thank you, USW! Thank you, UCW!

You shoud all be ashamed of yourselfs for all the name call when we know truly who the greedy ones are here. Thats why all these companies are going bankrupt.

Well everyone sees where your love is. for co-workers who probably didnt care one way or the other about your personal business. Most times people dont even ask about your feelings because "thats personal". I bet your family called and was there in time of need. Who will be there when we are hooked up to some machine in the hospital? co-workers? doubt it. try taking a collection for someone... $1-2 dollars. if the person doesent try to quietly walk by. get real and look into your soul. its family that is NUMERO UNO. stop getting a swelled head with the BROTHERHOOD crap. get real, see reality.

I keep hearing statements like, "the company has no mercy", "greed greed", etc etc
Any balanced minded person would say, you could make this remark about any company and any union... so it's a statement that gets you nowhere. The company is greedy bc they are asking teamsters to pay more for a more expensive health plan. On the other hand, the teamsters are greedy, because they thank Sikorsky for years of employment and wages and benefits, by not cooperating and taking on some responsibility for THEIR healthcare.
See how stupid this conversation is... get a new battle cry, nobody is bying this sob story.
And even though most salary want SOME teamsters back, we would never waste 1 precious vacation day for the benefit of a greedy union. We're not fighting your battles with you, we have our own problems.

There was an all-hands meeting in the high bay area on Thursday at 3:30 where the new president said exactly that. There were at least 2,000 salaried people there for that meeting. Believe it or not.

Take a look at the big picture.
UTC has stood firm against the union time and time again (Rockford, PW, Syracuse etc...)and shipped worked to lower cost locations.
Finger gets promoted (yes promoted) to the biggest aerospace division (4X size of Sikorsky).
Pino gets promoted. Do you think his first action as a President will be to cave to the Union? No way, he has to impress his boss and he will continue the UTC pattern to stand firm against unions and continue to find cheaper sources of manufacturing. This is a lost cause.

hourly vs salary
what a bunch of bunk!

You have been there 5 years less than me, never went to college, make double my salary, and pay shit for bennys. You suck. I went to college , take it in the ass for raises, work for free on occasion. Why do you think theres a little jealously. But its more jealously from a salary guy to a hourly dude. We outrank you and still you have it better. So if you think this messed up circus pisses salary off, you bet your leather chaps. Today as I walked amongst the many people working on the final assembly line today I made several observations:
1: With all the work being done it is hard to believe a strike is going on
2: Everyone IS WORKING, I do not see even one person that is just hanging around.
3: Everyone is happy and willing to help each other. In fact they are going out of their way to offer help.
4: It was great to see Managers, Directors and VPs in jeans and working right long side everyone else as one big team.
5: There is no longer an us vs them attitude anywhere. Hourly and Salery people working side by side. No one saying that is not my job.
It made me proud to know I am part of this team called Sikorsky Aircraft.

Yahoo 5:22 blog is the truth people! 100% accurate!
Food for thought. The jobs inside which require minimal training (which represents a large percentage) will be 100% fully functional, making more product than you've ever seen. It's already happening. The tougher jobs will be outsourced. This is also the truth.

I hate math.
but lets see here....
I've paid $58 for each month for the last 3 years of the prior contract...so thats...$2088
And I get back in the last 20 days a grand total of...
$232 x 2 - 58 = $406
How come we didn't get a check for the first week?
Now, let see....
I made on average about (take home pay) $600-900 a week.. $750 x 3 - 58 = $2192 that I could have had by now.
Plus the $2000 ratification, the 2 weeks vacation pay, one week sick pay...would have been.. $5000 with out taxes taken out. So about $4000 in total.
so $4000 + $2192 = $6192
And I only have 4 years in the company, the 25+ year enployees get 5 weeks vacation, and more money than me. So if they did the math...I'm sure they will get pissed off.
Now lets see, I have my self and my wife, so my insurance is $17 a week, but with the propossed medical, it would have been $34 a week, starting in 2007, and 2008 +15%, and 2009 another +15%...
17 x 52 = 884
34 x 52 = 1768
39 x 52 = 2028
so for the next 3 years...I'd have to shell out $4680 for just insurance...I'm still young, so it's rarely used.
This one month, if we did not strike, would have made me a sweet little profit of $1512, and I'll still have the next 2 years of vacation pay and sick pay...so for the contract that we were offered...not including the 3.5% raise, would have only set me back a little. My mortgage payment is $1451 and I could have made an extra payment and drop a year off of the term of the mortgage. Plus we all know with the contracts that Sikorsky had, we would have had plenty of OT to actually have a decent summer hobby.
But since my Union also has their point of giving everything back, and sticking with the same medical benifits...I could have still made that money back with one month of OT.
I would like to think all the Union Bro's and Sis's that have more time than most of the others, and thought only to strike to make a stand on a battle that will not be a won for many years. Corporations have their jobs to build things, pay their employees only what they are worth to them, and I found it to be highly generous that they would even offer to educate us.
$406 will go a long way....
Posted by: AnAnonymousHourly at March 11, 2006 6:30 PM
To everyone that has the idea that every union members wants this strike is crazy! I'm a mother of 2 small children and i fear my fellow union members if i were to cross? What would my next 20 years be like? If i'm lucky enough to see that. This has been the best paying job for me in years. I'm finally able to give my children a good life. My family could lose it all because members are doinging this nutty stuff. I just wish everyone would come to there senses. I want to go back but i'm scared! of my fellow members isn't that sad.

I am sorry that your union has the "THUG" mentality when it comes to line crossers. The teamsters 1150 is obviously nothing but a bunch of thugs. Bet you wished you never joined the union!!

Just remember people the only thing that you have access to is to the WALL OF SHAME. These are the people that sent in there letters, there are more than 100 more agency members crossing the line and you don't have a clue who did and how many more are coming back to work every day. So ask your union leadership for those names to be on the Wall of Shame. That's right they don't have a clue either!!!!!!!! the ones that quit the union woke up and the rest of you are still dreaming of the happy place, Rocco's Playground.

how can you hold your head up high when you revote on the same contract and accept it.If that is the case, then you went on strike for nothing.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 7:05 PM
One more time:::
You Cannot Revote. There is nothing to revote on. The union has to present an agreement to the company that the Co. agrees to, then you can vote again

Here People.......USE THIS!!!!
A sample union resignation letter is provided below.
[LETTER TO UNION: SEND BY CERTIFIED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED]
[your address]
[date]
[name and address of union]
[To the appropriate union officer (See your union constitution. For the Teamsters, for example, the letter must be addressed to the Secretary-Treasurer)]:
I hereby resign as a member of [name of union]. My resignation is effective immediately. I will continue to meet my lawful obligation of paying a representation fee to the union under its "union shop" or "agency shop" agreement with [name of employer].
Furthermore, I object to the collection and expenditure by the union of a fee for any purpose other than my pro rata share of the union's costs of collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance adjustment, as is my right under Communications Workers v. Beck, 487 U.S. 735 (1988). Pursuant to Teachers Local 1 v. Hudson, 475 U.S. 292 (1986), and Abrams v. Communications Workers, 59 F.3d 1373 (D.C. Cir. 1995), I request that you provide me with my procedural rights, including: reduction of my fees to an amount that includes only lawfully chargeable costs; notice of the calculation of that amount, verified by an independent certified public accountant; and notice of the procedure that you have adopted to hold my fees in an interest-bearing escrow account and give me an opportunity to challenge your calculation and have it reviewed by an impartial decisionmaker.
[If you pay dues by payroll deduction, include this paragraph: Accordingly, I also hereby notify you that I wish to authorize only the deduction of representation fees from my wages. If I am required to sign a new deduction authorization form to make that change, please provide me with the necessary form.]
Please reply promptly to my request. Any further collection or expenditure of dues or fees from me made without the procedural safeguards required by law will violate my rights under the National Labor Relations Act and/or U.S. Constitution.
Finally, please consider this objection to be permanent and continuing in nature.
Sincerely yours,
[name]
[If you include the paragraph on the change in your payroll deduction authorization, you should also send a copy of this letter to the payroll department of your employer.]

Exactly, please hold out longer. I'm sure that the above post is true. SIK found a new health care plan just for you guys. It is much better. Under the new SIK plan, they will actually pay you to get sick. To hell with copays, they pay you! Keep walking the line, it will only get better!

Got my letter today in the mail from the company to come back to work. I guess there are no replacement workers capable to do the job. We're the one's that are capable.
No health care package is not as bad as people were told. Someone from Cigna should have explained it to all of us. Not Rocco. The last I knew, he recommended to us to not except the contract.

It gets better for me, free lunch
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 7:38 PM
Another thing that pisses me off....
"if you need the money, then sell something"...if I here that one more time...I'll flip.
Because of this strike, I have to sell something to survive, just to get by, and that something is something that I already worked for, with blood and sweat, and the return on it will not even be half of what I bought it for.
All I am is an hourly worker, that want to just get the chance to have it back the way it was. Even if I have to pay more for health insureance, that just means I'll have to work a few more hours of OT to cover it....and WE ALL CAN DO THAT MUCH.
I just want to pay bills, work on what I have, and try to lead a life where I can do what I want, when I want. And have a decent life for the area I live in. I am so pissed right now.

To all My Dear Brothers & Sisters, Like myself you have all recieved a letter telling you that they want us back, If you missed the letter, (which the bastards had printed by a scab outfit, or they forgot to put the union bug at the bottom of the letter). They are asking us to call and tell them we want to come back.
PLEASE CALL THE NUMBER ADD (STAR), *67 before dialing the number thus blocking the number your calling from, so that would be *67-386-4966. After the intro select option 3. Leave a message that you will come back for the 80/20 salary health care plan. AS LONG AS IT IS BACKED WITH THE SALERY, PENSION PLAN, SALERY SAVINGS PLAN, SALERY SICK LEAVE PLAN, Oh and while we are at it throw in the parking plan for any one at or above labor grade 3! You may want to add that Lockheed is hiring in NY State for the EH-101. At least we can catch a break on the traffic & cost of housing.

I saw this just posted a bit ago:
PLEASE CALL THE NUMBER ADD (STAR), *67 before dialing the number thus blocking the number your calling from, so that would be *67-386-4966. After the intro select option 3. Leave a message that you will come back for the 80/20 salary health care plan. I thought I might reiterate my post from earlier as something to think about when reading that:

7:43 the salary pension plan, savings, and sick leave are all NON-UNION negotiated benefits. The union negotiates for things like the point system.

"Is that idiot who jumped off the Sikorsky Memorial Bridge Friday AM a union guy? Looks like he couldnt pay his booky. Lost big on the Uconn Syracuse game. But he lived so maybe hell try again! Get the lawn chairs ready! "
These are probably the most insensitive and cruel comments made yet in a blog chock full of them. Totally disgraceful, as I'm sure anyone with an ounce of class would agree.

For all the hourly wanting the salary pension...
Do you understand what new hires get for a pension? It's not the defined benefit plan.
Maybe you should know what you think you want relative to what you might get........

The company sent you that letter and it will also be in tomorrows paper if you noticed the small print at the top. They are not begging for you to come back. They are asking you to come back before it is to late. REmember you have only until Thursday which is day 21. After that the company no longer has to talk to any of you.

another comment/question for today (ok, I guess I have lots I'd like to say, but I don't want to make a post so long that it all just gets skimmed over):
I don't really see the point of all the name calling and bad mouthing going back and forth. Honestly, why would grown men and women think any sort of childish behavior, like is seen over and over... and over and over, on here, make for any sort of worthwhile discussion? All it does is perpetuate each other's feelings of animosity.
I really only bring it up right now because I'd like to understand why the people writing the "poems" feel they need to? What real purpose do they serve, other than to take up lots of space here, and showcase just how low people are able to go.
What actual use do they serve?
I single out those poems right now, but please, anyone who has decided they need to resort to name calling and belittling comments, please post for the rest of us your justification for purposely breeding animosity. It would be interesting to see the reasoning behind the comments.

Read the letter again to all those who are thinking the company is begging you to come back. The letter says they want YOU to come back. Call them. They do not say a word about negotiating with your Union nor do they suggest that you re-vote. Wake up. They are giving YOU as an individual the last call.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 8:36 PM
Didn someone say LAST CALL?

Keep pissing me off. Call me more names. Threaten me even more. I'm smoking your job. I figure I will cost you about $30,000.00 in overtime this year if you have a job when you get back work. You are the losers the mighty mighty losers. You guys have to face 6000 plus workers that you belittled. I am also glad that the union denied all the out-sourcing and the temporary workers, good luck to the stewards who have to face their union members. Plus do you really know what the hell you are doing by messing with your supervisors. I can't fkn wait for the party to start. Believe what you have read, it's going to be a different place.

(The above was an excellent analysis of the situation posted at 12:04 anonmously)It was so well stated , it bears repeating. Take it to heart strikers. Its not judgmental, for now, its advice.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 9:19 PM
One thing that all Sikorsky employees should realize is that because many, many American companies are sending work overseas and outsourcing to increase profits, ALL of our jobs are in danger. Take a minute and email your Congressman and Senators and tell them how you feel...It worked for the Port security issue - a little pressure never hurt...But right now, we should "give a crap" about what's being made in China. These greedy corporations don't care if America turns into a Mexico. Anyone remember Shanghai Sikorsky?...Salary or hourly - bad for both. I'm a Union man, but I hate what Corporations and politicians are doing to this country..(rant over) All that aside, the union members know that the Company really wants that flexible (for them)work week installed at the next contract so they can really stick it to the hourly workers. So, if Sikorsky is serious about getting people back to work, then give us a 4.5% increase per year and we'll take your medical..that was easy.

the next offer from UTC might not offer 4.5% over the 3 year life of the contract.

Without affiliation with the union, Sikorsky hourly are a skilled and talented group of men and women. With it, the union represents you as a bunch of uneducated juvenile jerks, mirroring the union a-hole gutter level leaders. (Yes you, Rocco – You are the least common denominator, an ego driven weak link). For the rest of you, I recommend that you dump the union entitlement mentality and represent yourselves based your own merits and abilities. Come back to work! Salary people will welcome you back with applause and gratitude.

Some of the highlights:
Rocco Calo, Sec'y/treasurer, $90,836+$5,834
$96,670 Total
Harvey Jackson, President, $78,094+$5,556
$83,650 Total
So it takes $96,000 a year for Rocco to come up with his brilliant schemes which threw away about $10 or $11 million in union wages in the last three weeks. Oh yeah, Rocco is looking at this whole thing from the standpoint of the little guy. He's as much the little guy as Henry Hill was in Goodfellas.

If every one out there is still all about the strike, why were there less than half of the number of local union members at the rally, (1500 is being nice), and that number is WITH all of the people that were bussed in from out of state. is there any possibility of dissention or unrest from perhaps more members than the 36 currently listed on the wall of shame? People who mainly think this strike is a stupid idea put in action without rocco first doing his homework and realizing that UTC (YES, UTC, NOT Sikorsky) wouldnt just crumble as soon as he demanded that they lower the health care costs?

This is all really sad. I am a hard working hourly guy who is really sick of the bullshit with both sides. Its just like the childish poems from salary, no one has any balls to talk face to face. Everyone hides behind something. Are not most of us men. People have families, people have to work, people want rights, and people dont want to feel like they are getting shit on. Why cant the union and the company talk about this? Why are they afraid of each other. This whole situation is a lose, lose situation for EVERYONE. I think it is really sad that people have to and are paid to come on this site to harrass people and make other people feel like shit. Not everyone in the union is uneducated and just because you are salary does not mean you are smarter than anyone. I dont care how much you paid or mommy and daddy paid for your degree. As for the union why do we have to beat a dead bush. Healthcare will not change why not offset it with a better pay raise each year. Maybe the people at the top of our union are trying to show how powerful we are by flexing our muscles instead of our brain. But this whole situation is really really sad, and I really feel bad for the people that come on here thinking they are better than someone. TALIKNG will resolve this issue but not behind a computer being "Anonymous". If the company doesnt want us hourly guys why all the bullshit "hide fighting" on the most popular site of this strike? This has to come to an end, EVERYONE IS LOSING DURING THIS STRIKE. WHILE THE COMPANY AND THE UNION FLEX THEIR ARMS TO SEE WHOS ARE BIGGER OUR CHILDREN AND THE PROSPERITY OF SIKORSKY ARE GROWING HUNGRY.

Revote? What do you think this is a third world democracy? Keep voting until they get it right? We got it right the first time!
Now I have to go call H/R!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 10:08 PM
"Healthcare will not change why not offset it with a better pay raise each year."
The raises offerred exceeded both the national and local averages, and a sign-on was offered as well. Had members been smart enough to ratify, they would have grossed more each year even after considering medical expense/premium changes.
UTC like all companies have shareholders. Shareholders, like workers, expect to earn more each year.it happens via increased profits. In order to increase profits, one cannot get extravagant with wages/benefits. The offer was far better than the one 95% of your fellow citizens will receive this year. UTC: 20% of premium payment by employeee. National and Ct average is 28-30%!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 10:08 PM
I see a lot of union and salary bashing on here... i bet for the most part, it's coming from outside people, so take it all with a grain of salt.
I think it's safe to say the majority of union and salary worker's have no problem with the other. we all want sikorsky to do well, and we all want the slackers from both sides to get theirs in the end.
And from a salary point of view, don't take it personally when a salary worker says that they think you are passing up a fair offer, or that we all must share the burden of healthcare. In no way is this a knock at your skills, intelligence, etc...
We hope you all come back soon, so we can all do OUR jobs, and so that we all will continue to make decent money and have jobs.
So, I think we should all stop bashing each other, ignore the few salary and union guys on here who are inciting fights, and just let everyone else's ideas be heard.
We see you walking everyday, we can tell most of you don't want to be there, and we understand, you are probably there (90%) because you believe in sticking together, which is honorable. It's coming on a month now for the strike, I think it would be nice if you guys take control of your future's, and accept a contract that you can live with.

The above post should have read, "In order to increase profits, one cannot get extravagant with wages/benefits, UNLESS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CEO & HIS COURT".
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 10:14 PM
If anyone is perceiving this as bashing, thats incorrect. I have known too many ex-employees of closed factories throughout the state; many would be working had their union sought what was plausable instead of attemtping to max out every last available dime from the company. Because, in a competitive world, if you do the latter, whether factory worker or salary employee, eventual free market forces push the employer to say no. We'll close, we'll relocate, but we won't meet your demands. The next thing to happen is what happened in the 90s in Ct.100,000 factory jobs end. Those 100,000 increase demand for other jobs-that REDUCES wages at those jobs.
Be happy the original offer was as good as it was, and for your own sakes, not UTCs, try to get an offer as close to that as possible.
I truly fear for the strikers.I have dealt with UTC from the supplier end, and they are not a force you want to reckon with. They don't budge from what they deem realistic. SAC Health Care will not be the first time they do. Whether its 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years, won't matter. 20% will be as good as it gets for those picketing.

"The above post should have read, "In order to increase profits, one cannot get extravagant with wages/benefits, UNLESS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CEO & HIS COURT"."
All CEOs make millions. However, he'll get the booot if earnings do not increase. Under his tenure, UTC stock traded as UTX has been stellar.
Now if the 3,600 strikers get jobs elsewhere doing the same thing and paying just as much as SAC, they proved the pay wasn't extravagant. Until than, they haven't.

HEY SCOTT, get a grip
The company wont come to the table until they finish their outsource plans unabated,(do you really think they hatched this plan 2 weeks ago? its not obvious that they wanted this strike?), the salary guys have decided to side with the company and help expedite this. Battle lines have been drawn .Its over dude, end of an era. Nothing inside of Sikorsky Aircraft will EVER be the same. This company will be so disfunctional for at least the next 10 years that it will probably not survive.
There will be no more actual fighting for contracts by the Ct delegation, We will drift into obscurity until we are sold.
If you thought you were going to retire from here, you are screwed. Wake up! Its a done deal, we (hourly AND salary) will be nothing but STATISTICS very soon. UTC will march on, Sikorsky just a tempest in a teapot of greed! Oh and by the way, Congratulations to Steve Finger on his new promotion, wonder how many salary guys he brought with him? GET A FREAKIN GRIP SCOTTY< WELCOME TO COPORATE AMERICA....kinda freakin stings ,dont it!

"The raises offerred exceeded both the national and local averages, and a sign-on was offered as well.
National and Ct average is 28-30%!"
This is understandable but consider inflation and people trying to keep their current standard of living. Unless the company doesn't care for their workers and their workers lives; a small percentage change in yearly wage percentage could actually benefit the company more by having workers perform better. Workers perform better when they feel like a piece of the pie, right now most of them feel like a speck of dust. Wouldn't workers performing better be a greater help to the company when the company is at a time when they are at record rates for the number of helicopters wanted. With too much focus on profits the company is losing its eye on what makes them that money....PRODUCTIVITY

Very well put, Scott. I have seen the foolishness in this forum from the beginning, mostly just people venting their frustration, but in any case not constructive. I am neither union nor salary, and not taking sides (I think the company needs both groups, otherwise they wouldn't have them all on the payroll). I do clearly believe though that Rocco & friends have taken on a kamikaze mission and much to the harm of the people he is paid to look out for, all over an issue that most of the rest of the world knows he is never going to get UTC to budge on. They are not going to get a different deal than the rest of the 220,000 UTC workers worldwide, and he is only self-delusional and misleading his members to gratify his own ego, and those who believe him are in for a rude awakening. Sikorsky wants to build the helicopters and make the customer happy, and they have asked the 3600 workers to come back. Even in the absence of a contract they'd get their old pay rate, and their old health care, beats standing out on the curb and jeering at the people who still show up to work. Anyone who wants to quit the union and be a real man can do so. I will never believe that a man would sign an "oath" that makes his "brothers" more important than his REAL family, and would leave his wife and kids penniless and homeless behind that. All the namecalling won't change anything. A few people have begun taking responsibility and defying the threats and intimidation of their "brothers." Too bad it has to come to that, all members should be pressuring their "leader" to get a grip and face reality, and all get back to work. If he wants you to think UTC is screwing you, just take a look around, EVERYBODY's health insurance rates suck, and lots of people are envious of the deal Sikorsky workers have got. Make a deal and get on with your lives. Hope you come back soon.

At a expired contract annual average gross of $65,000 for production workers, if they don't feel appeciated already, SAC hired all the wrong people to start with.
This isn't a Sam Gompers type of company.or a Scrooge-esque "More porage, sir".
$65,000./year plus a LOWER than Nat'l average insurance premium.
If I were the shareholders, I'd want the next offer to be considerably less generous.

Salary is probably motivated by the fact that they know UTC is huge and can offer them a safe landing if SAC becomes a Ct memory up the road. Now what safe haven will the Teamsters offer in the same circumstance?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 10:38 PM
S92 line will be gone soon and I’m not happy. Don’t take my word or anyone else from this blog. When you walk the line, ask your brothers and sisters if anyone works on the S92 line. Ask them what happen when it was moved from Bridgeport to Stratford. Part of the operation was moved to Keystone. Then ask them can “Sikorsky South be taking more Stations today right up to Hangar? Also, at the March 15th meeting, ask the leadership does “Sikorsky South exit. If they say “NO, then they are lying or out of touch. This is common term used by the shop floor to express their frustration on outsource. I hate to say it, but it is like cancer spreading throughout the shop. You only need to ask your follow brothers in Tooling and 1200 what happen to them when cancer hit.

I feel sorry for all of you that believe what the union has told ya'll. You will have the same health care package on the table. It a fair package they gave you. Why would you go on strike for such a GREAT package?? I do not work for SAC but I would love to. Seems to me they are more then fair to there employees. Whats with the hall of shame... shame on all of you for even posting it. People need to work, some of you might not need to, but most have familys to support. I am sure a lot more have crossed the line then what the wall of shame has lead you to believe. I do wish you all well.

EXACTLY! Teamsters aside, this is why we wont accept the same package as salary, cause things aren't the same for us hourly workers! We don't have that little implied guaranteed working for us. When they lay us off, we don't come back as yellow badges!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 10:47 PM
$65,000? I think thats a little high but if you do include overtime maybe. What is happening to our U.S. dollar. Take our medical for example. The value of our dollar is falling .Meaning we are getting less with the same ammount, which also means people have to pay more for a helicopter than the year before. This happens with the whole economy. Not just 1 aspect.

You missed the point. UTC would probably welcome the strike lasting, and UTC being able to relo the plant without looking like the villain. They would hire the "salaried group" that stuck with management elsewhere in the org., but not plant workers. Which means the strike ultimately leads to the demise of plant workers, but not salary.
I had no idea 3,600 kamikazes existed in southern Ct. OOPS! 3,600 less those smart enough to cross the line.

One thing I feel is that the company is not going to change the medical when all of the other divisions have the same medical and we are the last ones. If we are truly the last company they will get some one to accept the medical if not us.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:07 PM
I understand that, Ed. But unfortunately the time for the government to get involved and succeed is long past. It needed to be done in the period b/w the unions' pre-emptive strike threat (6 mths ago) and the contract actually ending.
Rell is afraid SAC might eventually leave, but she is obviously more fearful of offending UTC (since it has sizeable Ct operations w/o SAC).

Posted by: scott at March 11, 2006 11:25 PM
Ed, Have you seen any work center reconfigurations? Many times, those are the first hints at headcount reductions to come.
I'm an outsider, who has interacted w/UTC at a few suppliers. They are tough; they expect suppliers to get "lean" (English version: chop heads), so I assume they will do the same, but I suspect while they won't have 3,600 plant employees, they also would welcome having a sizable number in Stratford if the union agrees to reasonable medical care cost control for UTC.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:27 PM

I do believe with all my heart you that are on strike have made your beds, and now you have to live with that. 20/80 is a great deal, all the company is on that already for what I have seen.
To all of you on the line. You need to look at how foolish you all look to others. You HAD it made there...But a lot of your jobs are already gone. sad but true... feel for you all and god bless you

I am worried. Will there be manufacturing jobs in Ct. Did the union sell you guys out? Are they getting theirs (the union's) at the cost of ct manufacturing jobs? Will the average worker suffer?
I think it is time to go back to work.

I am a member of a labor relations consulting firm that was approached by UTC but opted not to sign on to this negotiation. I, as a matter of personal interest, have loosely followed this labor dispute, as I live in the area, and have abstained from commenting until this evening.
This blog is not a true forum for information, but I submit to you ALL that things are sometimes not as they may seem.
This company wanted to speed up its outsource plan without union intervention!
Plain and simple, with the scope of work that was on its table, ANY company that was concerned with keeping its delivery committments and production schedule could have
found a way to avoid this mess.
It really wouldn't have been that hard.
Stonewalling the negotiations right from the start and then making a seemingly sincere, albeit feeble attempt to put on the brakes at the last minute is an all too familiar ploy.
Anyone invovlved with labor
relations knows this tactic is designed, with varying degrees, for a specific result. I am an outside opinion that has been on this side of the table many times. It is not a productive tactic, but very effective when needed for a specific result.
You are currently pawns in a very elaborate chess game.Good luck to you all

Its nice you know the exact scab count, you must be proud.
How long until YOU start training replacement workers? See you in September scumbag!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 12:07 AM
Ed let them call you a scab... just remember what the definition of a scab is, when related to this subject (from dictionary.com):
1. A worker who refuses membership in a labor union.
2. An employee who works while others are on strike; a strikebreaker.
3. A person hired to replace a striking worker.
1. So what if someone refuses to be in your union? If you want the right to be in your union without people being derisive towards you, then you have to respect other's decisions not to be in the union, otherwise you are a hypocrite, and contemptible.
2. Again, so what... someone feels the need to actually support themselves and their family by working at a job they want to work at. You don't like people calling you names for striking, then stop calling people names for NOT striking. If you think you can have a double standard of being allowed your way, while not allowing others their way, you are contemptible.
3. I don't think this one applies, as he is actually just returning to work, not replacing. But so what if he was replacing. He would be replacing people who are putting their own minor labor dispute above the needs of our military men and women who are fighting for the exact right you are displaying by striking. Again, if you can't respect his decision to work in this time of need for the military that require equipment that Sikorsky makes, you are contemptible.
If you saw a common thread there with the use of the word contemptible, it was both correct, and on purpose, since one of the other meanings of the word scab is:
A person regarded as contemptible
So, I suppose you are actually a scab as well.

Salary workers unite.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 1:04 AM
I really hate to say this, but most of the jobs on the line, in the bladeshope, and even in the hanger....are all jobs that can be filled, replaced with someone that wants the work, or can be learned in a few weeks. The real hard jobs like the inspectors, crew chiefs, and flight electricians, are the jobs that need qualified people with years of experiance.
Anyone can drill a hole.
Anyone can buck a rivit.
Anyone can clamp a wire harness.
Anyone can install a part.
Anyone can lay-up a tip cap.
Anyone can paint.
Anyone can do a lot of the jobs that we do.
All they need is a little training to do the job, not a whole lot of things are different from build another aircraft. Aircraft mechanics are being pumped out of aeronautical schools all over the states at a faster rate than most people think. They already have the training for working on aircraft, and also have the understandings of working on aircraft....ie...the risk involved if something is done wrong, the risk that helicopters or planes just can't pull over on the side of the road if something goes wrong, and they also understand that they have many lives sitting in their work quality.
That said...we can be replaced!
All Sikorsky has to do is go to those aeronautical colleges or trade school and recruit the ones thats willing to move to this area, or the area that they will be moving our work to.
remember, I'm an hourly employee, that just wants the job, due to my finances, I might not be able to hold out very much longer, and I fear my job might not be there when we do get back. Due to my prior experiance, I highly doubt that they will want to get rid of me, but they will prolly want to make me move to where the work is being relocated...and I just bought a house...and it's not even improved enough to sell. Bills are bills, money is money, work is work...and so far, the $232 a week is a kick in the face since I have paid for their support for so long. I;ve put faith in the union system, but this dragging on for this long is just that...it dragging my checkbook into the red....and soon I will have to join the others unless there will be a ray of light that pops out and says we got another vote for a ratification by this week.

All the comments about the letter sent to the hourly workforce.
You guys did understand what was said right?
The company is asking, not begging you, not the union, to come back.
Sikorsky doesn't really want the union, haven't you guys figured this out yet?
If you come back now, you have to resign from the union, not that this would be a bad thing, unless your a pos slacker. If you were, I doubt when you called to come back that they would actually take you.
So if you want to be a part of Sikorsky's future,
go to barrels anonymous and kick the habit.
Once you see that you can do more than walk in cirlces, you and your family will be better off.
Honest hard working people don't need a union in 2006.

If the company asks for the employees back...but to keep the the union out, and they had actual writting saying what you work is what you get paid for, and promotions are based on work output instead of who's been the oldest fart there...then it would help in my decidion to cross.
I just watched one educated employee finaly get the rank of crew cheif...and he's been there for 25 years. granted, it is a hard job to fill, a lot of pressure, and nothing to take lightly...but he's been there for 25 years, doing the same job...day in day out, and now he finally gets the position. But on the other side, I've also watched another guy jump up the ladder...but he had to change shifts to get to where he is now. But it should be a position filled by the experiance and the want for the job...not be in line and wait for the losers to pass away or retire.

IF you get back inside and you act this way, The company has made provisions when you do so. Your in for the surprise of your life! Let alone, you will be arrested by the company and the employee for threatening! More trouble your BARGAINING for. It's your slack and attitude the co. doesn't and will not bring back! You can't get fired, BUT you WILL be layed off!
As for the WALL OF HONOR......Just laughable.....It states that the list is getting shorter......first.1%of the members...NOW it's 1.6% of the members.HMMMMMMMMMM...It's growing! The union is just so laughable and the people who stand with them in their sandbox crying that someone took away their lollipops! Wake up and realize what they lead you too!! They have lied to you from the very begining. Your just laughable and PATHETIC! The MAJORITY of surrouding communities think the UNIONS are a JOKE!

You should be more concerned about job security.
At other UTC facilities this has be outsourced:
Tooling to China and India.I believe you do this in West Haven
Crib Functions:To Bruckner Supply
Large facility jobs to Lowest bidder
Cleaning up facility:Capital Cleaning
Enviromental:Clean Harbors
Any thing that is not a CORE Competancy will be GONE!
Why do you think Mr. Hutton was brought to SIK?
Do you know all the Pratt people he has brought?
Eat the Health Care. Trade it for a gaurantee of 3600 jobs for 3 years. 100% replacement when someone retires.
Do you think they will keep West Haven and Bridgeport open?
Good Luck

The Wall of Shame is a disgrace to the UNION. The people listed have their reasons just as you have your reasons for walking the line. I am also affected by this my husband is on strike, has not crossed the line even though he voted for the contract. We do not hold any hard feelings to the ones who had to make a very hard decision and neither should you. I really became upset when I read the blog from the woman with two small children who needs her paycheck but is too afraid to cross the line due to the teamsters. It is disgusting the image the Teamsters are showing through this blog. The ones who are doing this need to take a very good look at who they really are. You need to GROW UP, start showing your intelligence instead of your ignorance.
I was raised by a teamster and saw my family loose their home due to a strike perhaps this is why I give credit to the ones who are doing what they have to do for their families. So stand tall for your believes but stop the bullying and harassing, it is making the teamsters look like MORONS instead of hard working people who want equality.

There are a FEW salary types that do not understand the value of our hourly workers. There are idiots and do not speak for the vast majority.
I have worked with the shop for a lot of years. Most are definitely skilled and are needed. I respect them and think we have a decent working relationship.
You two, however, represent the FEW on the hoursly side that I hope never get back in the door. You have a chip on your shoulders and will never admit someone from salary might actually know your job just as good as you, or even better. Not that we WANT to do it, but are more than willing to chip in and do what we can to keep product flowing during this bad situation.
To the hourly I know and respect, hope you are back soon. Most salary does miss you and needs you.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 8:17 AM
It is important to remember that all of this name-calling will not be remembered fondly when/if the hourly workers come back to work. The disrespect many hourly employees show to their supervisors and management is part of what is wrong with this company. You just cannot function as a team when every action taken by a member of management is questioned by hourly laborers who, frankly, have no right to question their supervisors, anyway. It's a serious lack of respect and it is appalling. The hourly worker is, in general, a paranoid person with a persecution complex. That really cuts down on how productive that person is able to be. It's hard to move forward when you are always looking over your shoulder. In reality, if you just did your work and dropped the attitude, you'd have nothing to fear. But fear is obviously what motivates union employees, otherwise how would their leadership ever get away with forcing them to pay for losing their jobs.

Hey Guys,
Just thought that I should mention this. The workers that just joined the union, did this so they can get some sort of income. As soon this is all over we will see how many quite the union.
Everyone better show up at UNION HALL WEDNESDAY THE 15th and tell ROCCO what you all want and that is to go back to work.
This will benefit all of us including salary. We all need to work together on this. All of our jobs are in danger of being farmed out including salary.
Again everyone should be working together.
As for the salary people. Having the union is good in some ways. We are able to demonstrate how we feel about our contract without being told your fired. Wish you salary could say the same. In other words this attempt to keep our insurance cost at a minimum is for all of us, but feel that this is were our politicians are getting the big bucks to do.
Good luck to all of you. First UNION MEETING IS AT 12pm the Second is at 4pm. be there this Wednesday. Call for directions if needed

U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., said he is "really angry" at Sikorsky over the plan."I and the other members of the Connecticut congressional delegation spend a lot of time working real hard and fighting successfully for contracts to build helicopters at Sikorsky and we’ve done really well," Lieberman said. "If they start moving jobs out of the state, that changes the whole picture.
"I’d say to those Sikorsky executives: Stop threatening to take jobs out of Connecticut. Come back to the table with Connecticut workers and work something out so they — the best helicopter workers in the world — can go back to work."
Gov. M. Jodi Rell offered to help restart negotiations between the company and Teamsters Local 1150 by mediating the dispute herself, and said both sides must find common ground soon.
"I do not want temporary workers. I do not want replacement workers. I do not want work going out of state," she said in a statement. "What I do want is for both sides to fully understand the wide-ranging effects this situation is having on individuals, families, communities, and the state as a whole."
While union officials said the company’s announcement is likely a bluff, Harvey Jackson, president of Teamsters Local 1150, welcomed Rell’s offer.
"I applaud the governor for her efforts," Jackson told the Associated Press Friday. "We’ve been ready for quite some time. Whatever it takes to get Sikorsky and us back to the table works for us."
The company, a division of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp., did not return calls Friday seeking more details about the plan as the strike nears the start of its fourth week Monday. The company’s contingency plan also includes using 6,000 nonunion workers and a mix of temporary workers to keep production moving.
Also Friday, Rep. Christopher Caruso, D-Bridgeport, asked Rell to reverse her decision not to provide financial aid to the town of Stratford as the costs of the strike mount.
Connecticut Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz also urged both sides to start negotiating and advocated against moving work out of the state.
"This hasty action appears more one of retaliation than sound, well-planned business strategy," she said in a statement. "This action would hurt not only the individual workers involved, but would damage the entire state economy."

So what? I'd be interested to see what the politicians in VA, NC and other non-union states have to offer Sikorsky as an incentive to relocate to their states. CT politicians have no say in whether or not a private company chooses to relocate out-of-state. It's just pandering to voters, that's all. More campaign hot air. What the government really wants is their contracts fulfilled better, faster and cheaper. And if it can be done better, faster and cheaper elsewhere, then that's all that matters.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 8:55 AM
Just shaking my head at all the hooplah the Teamsters are raising over what is essentially already a lost battle. A scab is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a water-logged brain, a combination backbone made of jelly and glue. Where others have hearts he carries a tumor of rotten principle.
When a scab comes down the street men turn their backs and angels weep in Heaven, and the devil shuts the gates of Hell to keep him out. No man has a right to scab so long as there is a pool of water to drown his body in, or a rope long enough to hang his carcass with.
JUDAS ISCARIOT was a gentleman compared with a scab. For betraying his Master he had character enough to hang himself - a scab has not. Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. Judas Iscariot sold his Savior for 30 pieces of silver. Benedict Arnold sold his country for the promise of a commission in the British Army.
The modern strikebreaker sells his birthright, his country, his wife, his children, and his fellow man for an unfilled promise from his employer, trust or corporation. Esau was a traitor to himself. STRATFORD, Conn., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Striking Sikorsky workers praised Gov. M. Jodi Rell for stepping in today to urge the company to return to the bargaining table and end its stalemate against the Teamsters.
Leaders of Teamsters Local 1150 immediately accepted the governor's offer of using her own table to help restart negotiations. Sikorsky workers walked out February 20 over the company's drive to dramatically increase health care costs for its lower-paid workers.
"We've said for weeks now that we are ready, willing and able to meet Sikorsky at the negotiating table and work out a fair contract that gets our people back to work and lets them maintain affordable health care benefits," said Rocco J. Calo, Local 1150 Secretary-Treasurer.
Gov. Rell's statement came a day after thousands of Teamsters gathered outside Sikorsky Aircraft for a rally led by General President Jim Hoffa in support of the 3,600 workers. Hoffa pledged the force of the 1.4 million- member Teamsters Union to help the striking Sikorsky workers prevail.
Sikorsky has refused to negotiate with the union, demanding that workers accept its unreasonable demands for cuts in health care benefits despite recent soaring revenues.

I drove by the Shelton plant yesterday, no one there working, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WORKING. Then drove by the Stratford plant and stopped at the gas station overlooking the parking lot. Very, very few cars in the lot. The company propaganda just isn't working, not much of anything going on. Talked with several salary friends of mine yesterday as well. The vast majority of salary workers are on our side and want to see us win on the medical. These salary workers also told me that very little production is being accomplished on the inside. The salary people realize the truth of the matter-Sikorsky simply cannot function without the hourly workforce.
It is apparent that a handful of spineless company puppets are on this list posting numerous messages that are all about fear tactics. Those messages are easy to spot, just look for the immature name calling and the rest of that kind of garbage. I personally find it pathetic. I just want to see the look on their faces when we win.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 9:28 AM
I have a real question here, and would like an answer suported by facts if possible. I just read the post above that says:
U.S. Sen.
Can anyone tell me what contracts the current congressional delegation has won for Sikorsky? I know of at least two high profile contracts that have been lost. Is the delegation coming forward at the same time and saying "However, we have also lost contracts for Sikorsky as well, so we say sorry for that."
Of course they aren't coming forward and saying that, and I don't mean because it wouldn't sound good in the news. I mean that it really comes down to the company winning or losing contracts, not our congressional delegates. It really galls me, and it should gall all Sikorsky employees, salary AND union, that these people are willing to go on public record and state that it is because of THEM that Sikorsky wins contracts.
Is it possible that they may have helped in some small way... maybe, but I find it hard to believe anyone thinking of buying a helicopter would base their decision on what a congressperson says.
However, my question remains. If anyone can show me that it was because of these people, not the good people working at Sikorsky top to bottom, that Sikorsky has won contracts, then I will retract my above statements.
Posted by: me at March 12, 2006 9:32 AM
What Gov Rell and all the other politicians want and what they will get are not necessarily the same thing. They do not have the POWER to make Sikorsky cave to your demands. Remember that everyone shooting their mouths off is STILL COLLECTING A WEEKLY PAYCHECK!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 9:35 AM
since someone decided they needed to post yet another horrible statement about being a scab (Jack London at 9:19am), I thought I might repost my statement from earlier, as it seems to still apply;
just remember what the definition of a scab is, when related to this subject (from dictionary.com):
Posted by: me at March 12, 2006 9:39 AM
Hey guys you know if we got rid of the union we would make an extra 58 dollars a month. Maybee that could offset the healthcare costs. They better have some answers or else I vote to fire their a******.

"Definition of a Strikebreaker," by Jack London
JACK LONDON, the man who wrote the famous definition of a scab, was born on Jan. 12, 1876 in San Francisco. London's bloodcurdling definition of a strikebreaker - a person who takes a striking worker's job and goes to work behind a picketline - follows:
"After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, the vampire, He had some awful substance left with which He made a scab.
Judas Iscariot was a traitor to his God. Benedict Arnold was a traitor to his country; a strikebreaker to his God, his country, his family, his class.
A real man will never scab."

130 years later it still applies.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 9:43 AM
What year did Jack London write that? Back when the unions were there to protect workers from actual harm, whether financial or physical.
I would bet a whole hell of a lot that if he took a look at this strike, he would not be applying that epithet to this situation.

Roccos choice was for us to strike, way befor the vote. Thats why the captains and eboard were at the vote telling members what to vote on. The banging was order by these same goons. I know I was there and appalled by this mentality. You need time alone to contimplate exactly who we are fighting for. Get of your high horse and come back to work

Union Propaganda at it's finest. Man , you must be scared to death of Wed meeting. Scared that the members figured out they were punk'd by their own leaders. Used and abused as pawns and poster children.
1st the union provides NO information for it's. It simply states that they were getting screwed. Were were the compenstaion studies? . Hell, Hoffa and the IBT are in D.C. - don't you think they could have provided some info from national data bases. Did they? - of course not. They dictated to you what you were entitled to - based on their own egos and nothing else.
2nd your rally falls flat - can't even draw 3000 people with your national leader present and folks brought in from out of state. Didn't even draw the 3,600 LOCAL that went on strike. That says it all right there!
Now the the Union paid posters are desperately trying to save face with last minute BS. They still don't provide you any REAL, helpful info. They simply don't want to be embarrassed anymore than they have been.
So sad instead of providing real info, the best the union can do for it's members is say "Stay Strong" 1000 times and put up a wall of shame to intimidate their OWN members. CLASSIC desperation tactics.
Question is will the members learn. "Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me"

As I was attempting to drive down Rte 110 past Sikorsky on Friday evening, I saw a bumper ticker on the car in front me that made me smile:
"Never under-estimate the power of a whole bunch of stupid people."
Seems like there's been some under-estimating on both sides of the fence. But I'll put my money on Sikorsky. They know they need to deliver Helicopters to the their customers and are doing what needs to be done.

To the Teamsters:
You truly seem to be oblivious to the fact that you have lost the respect of your former co-workers. When and IF you get back in and after you stop all your BS you might notice that no one cared if you talked to them or not. Someone who threatens you with violence or calls you names is not someone that will be repected or feared. They will be outcasts and that is exactly what you have made yourselves. Outcasts. No one told you to walk out. You did that to yourselves. Ms. Rell backing you...what a joke. All she wants is for the jobs to stay in Connecticut. She does not care if you have them or some other Connecticut resident. You can tell yourselves no this is not true and I do not know what I am talking about but you will only be fooling yourselves. Stand back and read your own posts. Can't you see how ridiculous they sound? It is a scary thought to think you might once again put your hands on an aircraft. There is no place in workforce 2006 for this behavior. Grow up.

Rule Number 1 is it is the company’s job to protect us ALL from a hostile work environment.
Why then is the company creating one by allowing people to cross? They cannot force us to eat at the same tables with the scabs, talk to them, or help them out in any way. These people, (the scabs), are very valuable to the company, for another week or 2 until this thing is settled. After that they become a liability, no longer an asset. A pain in the ass if you will. They will become lonely people. AS for the young kids that crossed I blame their parents. These are misguided young kids whose parents should have advised them to sit it out. For these young kids, Or ANYONE else who is new in a job. Your learning is over. You will now be told there is the blueprint you figure it out! In reviewing this I wonder if the scabs can sue UTC for creating a hostile work environment?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 10:59 AM
The suit would be against individuals creating a hostile work environment within the company. And you, if you pick on someone for just doing their jobs, will be guilty and, as a result, fired. It is NOT okay to discriminate against someone for believing other than YOU. The union can be charged with an unfair labor practice. It would not be the company at fault. Don't think they won't fire you, either. They are honing the axe as I type.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 12, 2006 11:02 AM
"Why then is the company creating one by allowing people to cross?"
What a stupid question! Because thay don't want to make it a lockout. In case you haven't noticed, they sent a letter to all of you inviting you back to work. Those who are not stubborn or immature or brainwashed by their suicidal cult leaders are beginning to pay attention. Anyone who does create a hostile work situation will be quickly weeded out if and when they allowed to come back, trust me. Grow up.

get over yourself. Do you think I really care about you. People did what they wanted to do, not what they were mis-led into thinking. Listen, this is not your world and you alone will not deter me, if this a pact mentality then you are the ones who should look over your shoulders. You have to stand alone in this time. Were you the little kid who was afraid of the bullies, I never was and sure as hell aint now. Get over yourself.

I have good friends walking the line and I already informed them that Sikorsky Management has been reviewing photos of line walkers (yes, they've been taking these pictures since day 1) and those who've been displaying "inappropriate & aggressive behavior" towards workers (especially the women) coming into and out of the Stratford plant have been singled out and will be used as part of numerous bargaining points when they eventually meet with the union to finalize the contract. Yes, there will be an end soon, but not everyone will be allowed back. The union will be forced to sacrifice these people in order to save the rest. Good luck to those who have behaved as grown adults during this hard time, you will be rewarded for your upstanding behavior. The managers do understand your loyalty to the union. As for the thugs and bullies who relied on childish intimidation tactics...goodbye.

Tell me one thing,
what do you think you are accomplishing by yelling at the people driving into or out of SAC.
you keep yelling "GO HOME".
Like someone would hear that and all of a sudden say to themselves " I should listen to this jobless guy standing by the road and not go to work."
Guys go do something that actually gets you some results.

First thing that is agreed upon in negotiations when a strike is settled: AMNESTY FOR ALL! We went out as a group & we go back as a group. If the company didn’t force this strike upon us, the picket line incidents would never have gone on. Even the nail thrower will be back WATCH. & I submit to you that if a bit misguided Brother Parker is not welcomed back, NO ONE GOES BACK. Look it up in Labor Negotiations 101.

Throwing Nails, & The Wall of Shame, Who is the scab among us?
What type of person crosses the line against his brothers & sisters? Lets look at the Nail thrower. While I do not know him, he was out there supporting his union in a misguided way. He represents everything that is the people on the wall of shame, in this for ME. Not willing to take a stand on anything UNLESS IT BENNEFITS THEM.
Another Wall of Shamer who will remain nameless, (and it’s not the nailer), least he sue me. This guy is a company man all the way. He would do what ever it takes to get the job done. When things broke right it was always, “WE GOT THE JOB DONE. But if a problem came up, he didn't hesitate to name names. Then he hurt his back. Out of work for a dogs age. This guy is not back one day & he is showing all of us his barn & the work he got done on it while he was out on comp. Did any one turn him in? NO. Don’t try it again you scabby prick. You won’t have to worry about the company filming you while you are on workmen’s comp, I’ll be doing it for them!

I feel for very one - I do. I thought I could handle it - I did - truly. But then I had my first experience of what it must be like for people who HAVE to cross the line or for the salary workers. I just don't get it! I just want a simple answer. You know, it's like religion in a way - you can't force your opinion on others - you can't. People have to do what they have to do - their beliefs are their beliefs. I understand that the more people that stand behind something and fight for it the better chance but when it comes to something that may not win and people just were never in the position in the first place - no matter what education level you have no matter how much money you had in the bank - things happen in the life that take toll sometimes unexpected and your life savings can dwindle then this hits - what do you do? Hate these people? Make them feel more uncomfortable then they already do? Put more stress on them? Just please again, explain as if you had to explain it to an elementary school class? And again - no need to call me names or be nasty and no need to be imature about it - I just want to understand it from a die hard union point of view b/c I truly don't!
Posted by: Question at March 13, 2006 1:03 PM
I see that no one can answer my question but instead we're back to swearing and screaming at each party. It's pathetic and at times I am embarrassed to say I have a spouse that is or has to be part of the union b/c I have not seen on any of the messages on this blog, in the newspaper, or on TV any display of professionalism, maturity, etc... If my spouse decides to cross the line I will make sure I follow in my car, I'll pull over and I'll write their name on the Wall of Shame broad then wave as they go in being proud of doing what they need to do.

Dear Union Guys/Gals
If your cause is so important, why are the other unions of UTC not supporting you? They should be on strike to support their brothers and Sisters. Answer: They already ratified their contracts with the healthcare plan you rejected. They keep their friends close and their enemies even closer. They realized real fast that UTC is going to a one system (with choices) of healthcare for all. They managed to get increases in other areas. Where is the Union counteroffer? Did you base it on what the machinist received? Why do you think you deserve better? Do you make more money for the corporation? Start understanding your enemy!
I hear Salary people being proud of what they do and where they work. They are even proud of doing the union’s work. The company’s commitments are salary’s commitments. What are union’s commitments? (Strike?) Does a union person ever say: “I am proud to work at Sikorsky! Does the Teamsters site even use the word SIKORSKY other than to say strike? Do the Union jackets ever show a Sikorsky logo? Any Sikorsky hats in the union crowd? The union is a false god. What have they done for you lately, today? Can you even find them? Where is Jimmy H Jr. today? What has he done for you TODAY?
Union people act as prodigal sons. Give me my share and good-by. The time will come when you realize who really takes care of you, who is your real parent, and where is your real home. You will return – in shame and hope for the least. The parent is actually already welcoming you back. You continue to refuse the call. You stand united with your false god.
Productivity. When a salary person gets a raise, they are expected to work more efficiently and produce more for the company. Unions, how about asking for more salary and offer productivity increases? (Can you say WIN/WIN?) What a great bargaining chip. Set up some pay for performance incentives. When an aircraft is properly assembled in less time (and less escapes) - get a bonus (equivalent OT money). Can you figure this out? Let me spell it out - Work harder/faster for more pay. As we reduce the price of aircraft, more aircraft will be bought. The company will profit, leave the jobs in CT (because they can not find anyone more productive to do it!), and Unions will be assured of continued employment. (Can you say WIN/WIN?)
Strategy (Lack there of!) The Union has not countered with any offer at any time. The only response was STIKE. With all the paid union dues, a slick lawyer/advisor could have been hired and produced some real advice. Your well-paid Union Bosses are not very productive nor do they have a strategy (Telling everyone what G David makes and Striking is not what I call a plan or strategy.). Union Bosses are relying on a Mafia mentality. The Mafia does not even play well in the theaters anymore. You stand united with your outdated Neanderthal god.
Reality. It takes Honda 18 hours and Toyota 19 hours in a non-union shops located in the USA to assemble a car. It takes GMC 23+ hours to assemble a car in a union shop located in the USA. GMC also has the burden of big union pensions. How well is GMC competing with Honda? Unions and unproductive workforces are UNAMERICAN. The USA is the greatest country because we have the most freedoms and the highest productively of other countries. Union members are not free to do a better/faster job. They are not free to cross the line without a shameful “wall of shame. Entrenched Unionites slow down others that want to work and get to training. How about the rest you speed up? When productivity is lost, so will the country. We are in a global economy. We have to compete – G-L-O-B-A-L-L-Y. WAKEUP.
Teamsters – I believe the wrong end of the horse made it to your logo. What do driving horses have to do with building helicopters? I respect the Machinist at Pratt. They are a class outfit and have skilled workers. They managed to get a contract ratified. They have even used ACE to increase productivity. That is why they are not supporting your sub-class of union. Dump the Teamsters and joint the machinist if you are worthy. Teamsters are out-of-touch, out-classed, untouchables of modern skilled worker society.

Don't tell me About ACE. The MIDDLE DIGIT'S ass boy Tom & his moving line? What a mental midget! I hope old’ Middle Digit takes Tom back to Pratt to finish the job they started years ago. Destroying a once great company. Pratt went from number one to 4. In the industry they are a joke. Friends who work on aircraft have commented that Pratt has no concept of A.O.G. that would be Aircraft On Ground. 3 words that mean nothing to Pratt. Pratt is better known for their surplus store than they are for engines!

Is the moral to this story "Don't join a union"? I found this blog while researching unions online. My co-workers are trying to get a union at our work. I just don't know who to trust. The company is telling us bad things about unions. The union is 'prediciting' everything the company is saying. I feel like I am in the middle. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
