In Search of Answers
IN AN IMPASSIONED SPEECH along the lines of Martin Luther King or General George Patton, Harvey Jackson told SIK at the rally Thursday:
"Our time has come, Sikorsky Aircraft, your time has come..."
Great speech Harv, but the opinion of the vast majority of the strikers I have talked with, "our" time will be here on Wednesday at the planned membership meeting.
The following three questions, all of which you and your staff have heard in one way or another, are on the minds of many strikers.
What is the story on unemployment compensation?
Is the Union willing to concede the 80/20 and improve other areas of the original contract?
Can replacement workers take our jobs once the strike is settled?
The strikers need answers, otherwise expect to hear from the crowd that nasty six letter word ...R-E-V-O-T-E.
And yes, we know there is no contract to vote on right now.

Frank, the leadman from machine shop 2nd shift, has Crossed the line!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:26 AM
Freddy Rocco, the parts chaser on 2nd shift that never smiles (and has been here for 32 years) has Crossed the line!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:27 AM
John Palyo, the guy on 2nd shift 1250 Processing (across from Shot Peen) has Crossed the line!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:29 AM
If you guys are going to continue to roll out peoples names, you should at least have the balls to put your own up there.
If these guys did in fact cross then they probably need to take care of their families, there is no shame in that.
If someone of 32 years crossed, that should tell you something, it's not worth it.

1150 leaders, its obvious the co. isnt budging on healthcare. we need to get back to the table. maybe we bang them on pension and hourly wages. and get our membership back to work. dont let ego get in the way. all these unions backing us have paychecks coming in to support their families. if either one of you guys would stray from your circle and ask union members opinions i feel it would open your eyes. we cant fight for the whole country on the healthcare system. all lot of good people are sinking financially, and trying to hold on. not taking anything away from what you guys have done. in my 27 years at sik you are by far the best team we have had. But take care of your membership and get us back to work where we need to be. the national and the polititions need to fix healthcare. we are not all in the same financial positions for whatever reasons. time to put ego aside and get us to work. that is what the majority needs. if we upped the pension and annual increases a bit a revote would ratify the contract. and we would have at least gained something.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:33 AM
I am the wife of a SIK worker. I feel that you guys have made a big mistake going on strike. This is a bad economy for everyone. The rising cost of healthcare is not the problem of the company. SIK workers are very spoiled and feel that the company owes you something. Well they don't. They are a good company that offers very good wages, benefits, and some stability. I work for an insurance company and I was offered very similiar benefits to what you guys were offered and at about the same cost. The union has misled you to not sign the contract when in the real world that was a very good contract. I don't get a sign on bonus, 3.5% raise every year. You guys all think that you are not replaceable but you are. If you don't go back to work soon you will all be working for $10-$15 on hour with higher healthcare costs, if you are even likely to get a job. SO STOP LISENING TO THE UNION AND GO BACK TO WORK.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:34 AM
obviously, these guys that crossed the line have no contract to work with. They have no medical and they only are making money, a little more than 232 but they are making money. That's it!!! I hope that when all of us come back...that these guys better realize what they did. You lost your friends guys. You can't be trusted no more!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:34 AM
Yes, Harvey and all the E boarders, I am proud of the way you guys are trying, but we as memebrs need answers, not estimates of whats going on. If we can not win this fight, lets move on, get an upgrade somewheres else, and get back to work, and when that day comes, we as paying maembers of 1150, NEED to know whats going on with outsourcing, definitive answers also, not the run around!

Obviously your an ass!
If you can sit here and say these guys have lost their friends because they want to support their families, then that's what you have to be.
With friends like that, who needs brothers and sisters from the union?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:38 AM
Health care i s huge thing right now for everyone not just SIKORSKY.Your turning down a sign on bonus and raises...hmmmmmm where's your priorities now? sitting home collecting a $232 check? lol...must be the life
Posted by: Chrissie at March 11, 2006 11:38 AM
You will not win on the healthcare issue....just remember that sik is way bigger than local 1150. sik wants good workers willing to work and you are showing them the opposite....tell Rocco you want to sign the contract (as is) and go back to work........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:42 AM
Nice Point wifey!!! This IS NOT a Sikorsky only problem. It is the whole U.S.A. We should re-vote on a new contract. Rocco and 1150...if you are reading this....Go talk to the Company. Go see if wages can be tinkered with or contributions can be played with or mess around with the deductible. Do something cause these people are getting ancy!! We all know that the country already has 80 / 20...thats fine. Its the wekly payments or wages that need to be fixed. See what you can do. I know you guys know something...we just hate waiting to find out what? Go talk to Sikorsky. We all need to go back to work. This is getting to be boring. We made the point. Hoffa spoke his words. Now...go talk with the Right people. I am tired of people saying we have it made here. Big deal...we get paid good money. We don't build toasters here. We build Aircraft. Peoples lives are in our hands everyday. This is why we make the big bucks. But if the company wants us to fork over what we made for them...this aint fair. You have new leaders in office now Rocco. Go see if they will talk to you like grown men instead of a bunch of sissys that only think of themselves. We're counting on ya...Good luck
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:43 AM
Any one who returns to work is paid the wages as to when you all left. As for beefits they recieve the same as when they left. The new contract when it is ratified still has the old med benny's till Jan 07.
Smarten up and stop the BS

i cant support my family on 232.00 a week. oh yeah minus 58.00 union dues. and please dont say get another job. g david already said that.do what is in the members best interest. forget impressing Hoffa. he gets paid. get us back to work. we have heard nothing about getting back to the table or even trying to since Hoffa and the other unions jumped on our backs. we are not sacrificial lambs. time to get us to work so we can support our families, which is all most of us want to do.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:48 AM
Hey Jeff Pino....It's your friend Mike. If you can read this...See what you can do for these people. I known ya for a long time and i don't think you are like the old President of that company. Give the people a break. listen to what they all have to say. I am getting tired of reading the paper and seeing the news about this strike. I know you're better than that. Prove it to them. See ya in July on the water!!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:49 AM
Wife of sik worker. As I see things being on the outside...Rocco is running your lives. Everytime my husband talks to anyone in the union they tell him the same thing....Just hold on we will win this fight. How does Rocco think he is going to win against a multi billion dollar company. The company is not budging on the healthcare issue and as for you pay and raises the company is being very generous...I didn't get a raise for 2 years but this year I did and it was 2.5%....which only equated to about $900 for the year. so suck up the healthcare issue and GO BACK TO WORK!

Despite what you have been told this is an economic strike. Workers can be replaced permanently. There are tons of people out there who would love these jobs. Are you willing to bet your careers that the company will not replace workers? Information below taken from
http://www.nlrb.gov/nlrb/legal/manuals/rules/act.asp
Question
What are the Unfair Labor Practices of Employers?
Answer
The Act defines the following Unfair Labor Practices for Employers:
Section 8(a)(1)-Intereference with Section 7 Rights (the rights of employees guaranteed by the Act)
Section 8(a)(2)-Domination or Illegal Assistance and Support of a Labor Organization
Section 8(a)(3)-Discrimination Against Employees
Section 8(a)(4)-Discrimination for NLRB Activity
Section 8(a)(5)-Refusal to Bargain in Good Faith
Section 8(e)-Entering a Hot Cargo Agreement
What is an economic strike?
Question
What is an economic strike?
Answer
http://www.nlrb.gov/nlrb/shared_files/brochures/basicguide.asp#righttostrike
If the object of a strike is to obtain from the employer some economic concession such as higher wages, shorter hours, or better working conditions, the striking employees are called economic strikers. They retain their status as employees and cannot be discharged, but they can be replaced by their employer. If the employer has hired bona fide permanent replacements who are filling the jobs of the economic strikers when the strikers apply unconditionally to go back to work, the strikers are not entitled to reinstatement at that time. However, if the strikers do not obtain regular and substantially equivalent employment, they are entitled to be recalled to jobs for which they are qualified when openings in such jobs occur if they, or their bargaining representative, have made an unconditional request for their reinstatement.
How do I request a decertification election?
Question
How do I request a decertification election?
Answer
The Act contains a provision whereby employees or someone acting on their behalf can file a petition seeking an election to determine if the employees wish to retain the individual or labor organization currently acting as their bargaining representative, whether the representative has been certified or voluntarily recognized by the employer. This is called a decertification election.

So let me get this straight. You have all walked out on your jobs because you did not like the original contract that sikorsky offered you, you have lost thousands of dollars in pay, have had no health care or life insurance, have cost this town hundreds of thousands of dollars, have caused traffic jams, have hurt the businesses around you, have ruined many friendships with people that you have worked with for many years by spitting on their cars and yelling obsenities at them, have caused sikorsky to outsource many of your jobs so that you may find you no longer have a job when all this is done, and yet you are now yelling for a REVOTE of the SAME contract that you rejected in the first place??!! Hmmmmm, you are really showing them!!!
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 11:55 AM
Let's pass on the stirke issue for a moment,
In case anyone remembers, this weekend,
Sikorsky was suppose to support habitat for humanity.
Due to the strike, we had to back out of our commitment to donate our skills to the cause.
This is not an hourly vs salary issue as both workforces contribute to the cause.
Imagine, an honest needy family, depending on our help has been let down.
This is the first time in years that I can say Sikorsky has not supported this event.
All I can say to the bridgeport chapter of H4H is that I'm sorry. Hopefully in the future we will be able to continue our support.

Do Your Homework First
Its obvious from reading this board and the news details of this strike that neither the union leadership or its members did their homework before voting to strike and this is reflected in this latest Walk the Line segment.
Unemployment: Simple research shows the law to be very clear. Strikers are not entitled to unemployment unless the job action is ruled a lockout. That people are crossing the line to return to work repudiates that. That anyone would vote to strike anticipating they would get unemployment pay was foolish....if the union leadership spread that idea, it was irresponsible.
Permanent Replacements: Read the NLRB labor laws on this. The Union will not decide whether you can or cannot be permanently replaced, but will be the result of government interpretation whether the company acted in good faith in its mediations prior to bringing in replacements. Do the research...then decide for yourselves.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT: The biggest mistake I see happening here by the union and its members is to continue to view this as a strike against Sikrosky, rather than a strike against UTC. If you had researched UTC before you went on strike, you would have known that the entire company has the 80/20 plan you went on strike against, and that there's no way they would offer something different with other, much larger, companies having contracts forthcoming.
Also, check out what UTC's history has been with strikes since George David has taken over. In every case I am aware of, the company has held firm and the strike has ended with the return to work of the work force at the same, or less, than what was offered to begin with.
This entire episodes reads like the story of someone who foolishly picks a fight with what they think is a poorly equiped opponent, and then finds out too late that they are dealing with a more heavily armed and dangerous foe.

I would like to point out, for anyone hoping Jeff Pino will be a pushover, that one of his first acts as Sik president was to order up permanent replacement workers.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 12:26 PM
At the risk of continuing to repeat myself, I'd like to remind you that when next you vote, it may not be on the same contract you rejected on 2/19. That contract is no longer on the table. You can only hope you get as good an offer on your next vote. Start thinking about how you will vote if the 80/20 stays and the ratification bonus and annual increases go. This is a very real possibility. I don't think you can seriously expect the company to pay you a bonus for ratifying a contract that you rejected once. You can't hurt the company like that and then expect them to continue handing you cash like it's nothing.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 12:33 PM
Respect and welcome home to the guys who made the tough decision...and to the many others that the "wall of shame" is not admitting to because it would be an admission of failure. These guys have chosen to honor their responsibility to their families and their personal obligations which take priority over blind suicidal allegiance to this "brotherhood" which has done them such a disservice.

Wow healthcare......the dumbest reason to strike over something that is going to benefit us. Remember, UTC doesn't have to offer us this benefit at such a good plan!

What is the story on unemployment compensation?
Can someone expalin what this question meant? You don't really think you will be compensated for time lost during the strike, do you?
Posted by: joe b at March 11, 2006 1:15 PM
According to the NLRB, it's an economic strike, so the answer is no.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:19 PM
It is now obvious to everyone that the company is not going to budge on the healthcare plan. Alright... so let's work around it. Agree to eat healthcare plan and get back to negotiations on the rest of the contract. Maybe a larger increase to the pension or larger signing bonus or general increase to offset the increased cost of the healthcare package. BOTH sides have to be willing to make compromises and concessions.

I'm a salary worker who just returned home from the plant, and in the mail was my paycheck. For you union memebers I just want to say thanks for the overtime. With the extra, I'll take my kids and grand kids to Outback toninght for dinner,,,Thanks again. Just compare it to the $232 you are getting(min us taxes--180+)you may be able to get a couple of hot dogs for your night out, if that. End this and come back to work..

Serious question to Strikers:
If the company came back with a 90/10 plan with a lesser pay deduction increase
and
No signing bonus
and
3.0 % raises
would that be acceptable????
Posted by: joe b at March 11, 2006 1:23 PM
In answer to the question posted by joe b at 1:15:
Many of these strikers thought that they would be eligible for unemployment compensation, but because the company opened its doors to anyone who wanted to come back, they are not eligible. Something that the union failed to explain to its members! Score one for Sikorsky!!!

Let's see.....SIK has no current offer on the table. If that continues to be the case, then the strike will obviously continue. As the strike continues, more and more Teamsters will submit the union resignations, and return to work. So if SIK just continues to hold out, they will eventually get most of the workers back without the union. Am I being naive here, or is this a SLAM DUNK for SIK?

I just came from a meeting of fellow salary workers, and we all agree we are tired of being used as pawns in this labor dispute between the Union and UTC.
We would like to ask all of our salary workers, from all UTC divisions that are working in Sikorsky, to take Wednesday March 15, 2006 off, to force the two sides together.
If we all just take off one day, hopefully we can go back to our normal work life.

Could THEY have wanted this Strike to happen?
Do they need excuses as to Why their contracts with Gov are not being met?
So many questions...
Just stop bashing each other you salary people..its not nice! Just do your Job and Keep quiet like UTC.
The hourly workers probaly won't win this national health care battle, AT LEAST they tried and sacrificed!
Chicken Hourly Workers! See now ya did it, you made me get nasty... Lets see how many of you have your 'family' salary jobs at SIK when they re-vamp, re-organized after all this is oveare
I think the SIK union workers should go get other Jobs. Screw UTC. Do you really think there is no jobs out there? Alot already have 2 & 3rd jobs in addition to SIK already......
Put the word out: Sik union workers seeking jobs
(Play like UTC and look elsewhere) Its all over, UTC ruined moral of a great group of quality skilled workers. Any one want to hire them?

Actually Sikorsky is a great place to work. My husband has worked there for over 20 years and has been happy and loves his job. My father worked there as well, and also loved his job. It is the union that is causing all these problems, not sikorsky. They offered a very fair contract, but some people are greedy and others are intimidated and can't think for themselves, so Sikorsky and many others have to suffer.
Posted by: anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:43 PM
Not every division of Sikorsky is on the 80/20 plan and paying $50-75/week for healthcare.
MEDICAL COVERAGE
You can select either a preferred provider program (PPO- no restrictions on provider selection) or an Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Both are sponsored by Blue Cross, one of the largest healthcare providers in the US. The charge for employee-only coverage under the HMO plan is $1.00/mo. and $9.00/mo. for the PPO. You can elect to cover your eligible dependents under either plan for an additional monthly charge. Vision benefits are available under the HMO and prescription drug benefits are available under both plans. Dental coverage is also available under both plans as an additional cost option through Delta Dental. Enrollment is 30 days after hire.

Serious response to Joe B.,
Moving the same amount of money around to allow for a 90/10 plan would work for me. I am very satisfied with my current hourly wage. Most hourly folks are. The signing bonus is not a big issue either.
A survey of union members took place months before the strike, at which point it was indicated that the top priorities were as follows...
1) Healthcare
2) Pension
3) Wages
I would even give up the general increase all together if it included lower costs for the cost of prescription drugs. For me, not having to worry about astronomical bills in the event of illness or injury is more improtant than wage.
There is plenty of room to work on the contract. But, it's not going to happen if the "Mexican standoff" continues.
Thanks for posting a great question!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 1:46 PM
If you return to work you will receive the same benefits that you received in the old contract, and you go back to the pay you received before the strike. You also get free lunch (yes FREE lunch, on the company) every day.

I wanted to repost my comment/question from the previous days blog before posting my new one for today:
It has taken me quite a while to plod through this blog, the photos from the lines, and the audio slideshow, and finally thought I would start making a few comments and asking a few questions. My comment/question for this time has to do with:
http://www.teamsters1150.org/wall_of_shame.htm
The "Wall of Shame"?? Are you kidding me? The first time I read about it, I thought - no way, no present day organization would feel it necessary to belittle people that had decided striking was not for them, that they wanted or needed to go back to work.
What possible value does this list hold, other than as a coersion tactic to try to keep people in the rank and file, especially considering the other posts I would read... the ones that said the rest of the union now knows who they are and will, once they come back "make their lives a living hell".
Instead of this list, with graphics in the background of rats, and the line "The following are the names of people who have abandoned their fellow members and refuse to stand tall with the membership of Local 1150." right there in black and white, why don't you list instead those among you, or among anyone, willing to pay all the bills these people are trying to pay. That way they may not feel the desire/need to cross your lines. I read numerous times about how horrible these people are, but not one person saying "here, take my money to support yourself".
What if they voted to ratify the contract? Are they supposed to "stand tall" with you, use up all their resources for your cause?
Why don't they have the right to NOT stand tall with you if they disagree, WITHOUT the attempted coersion, and without the threats?
I read about how the 1150 is standing up for the little guy. What if the little guy wants to stand up for him or herself and go back to work. What right do you have to demand your right to do what you feel is right... strike, yet try to coerce others to do something they don't feel the desire to do?
It reeks of hypocrisy to me.
I dare you to take the high road and ask your leaders to remove that from the website and the picket lines. Until then, you have most certainly lost a lot of people's support, and even worse, their respect for you...

See, Joe B, assumes Im a Teamster, shows how ignorant he is, we can all see thru him now. I never said I was Teamster, maybe yes, maybe no, it really does not matter now does it? You dont work for Sikorsky, so you have no stake in this matter, except to show how stupid you are, and you have done a great job of it, I hope you are a publicist for your company, youd sure show them the way to bankruptcy! P.S.- does Burger King have publicists Joe B., or are you a trainee burger flipper, mad at Sikorsky for not hiring you...

Post of 1:43. Right On!!! That's exactly what I told my husband. Wouldn't you rather work for a company that cared about you for $20/hour than work for a company that thinks they can use you and treat you like dirt. Many of the strikers have worked there for over 20 years so what's the problem, now that their getting older and need healthcare their going to get rid of them all or just raise their rates. It sickens me that noone is placing any responsibility on the company for all of this. If the company didn't want the workers to go on strike they wouldn't have asked for such large contributions. I work for a small company and I pay $15/week for a family for the same plan that they are proposing. What is wrong with you people? Where are the Rosa Parks in this country???? Corporate Greed has got to stop. And according to the post above it isn't an economic strike. They aren't asking for more wages they are asking for more Healthcare. The company is refusing to Bargain in Good Faith so thanks for pointing that out...Admittedly they all had a great Healthcare plan for a long time and many still do and many don't. There is always somebody better off and somebody worse off but when does it end?????
The company has definitely behaved very poorly sending termination letters to spouses of the insured, this doesn't happen in most companies, not holding a meeting on the Friday before the vote and giving the employees detailed information on the new Healthcare package and then misrepresenting the employees salaries and package offered to the public. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON THEM!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE LIES. DO NOT HEAR THE THREATS. CONTINUE TO BE STRONG AND UNITED AND WE WILL WIN!
Do Teamsters really believe this Rhetoric?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:08 PM
When midnight Sunday comes, EVERYONE on the picket line is eligible to be FIRED. That's the LAW governing an economic strike. You've had your 21 days, you've had your so-called rally (1400 people, NOT 3600 union workers), so now it's time to "pay the piper" and find new jobs, because you won't be SIKORSKY employees anymore. Let your union find you new jobs if they can. They already have their salary paying jobs, you have nothing!!!.......and will get nothing!!
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:10 PM
anon 2:07, Id rather pick up my little paycheck with my head held high, unlike you, whatever you are, salary, scab, etc, so go get your big check, when we come back, well switch roles.

How come Union employees are not represented by a Labor Union?????
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:12 PM
Those workers who have crossed the picket line are now at the mercy of a company with NO mercy. And, the fact of the matter is that supervision despises their lack of loyalty and integrity just as much as the union does. The scabs have presented themselves as weak and easily intimidated and supervision will take full advantage of them. They are now "at will" employees and can be terminated or demoted at any time. True... There are labor laws. But, it would take a few thousand dollar retainer and years of litigation to resolve an improper termination suit.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 2:12 PM
To all the disgruntled salary workers?
Where are you??????
I hear it, but have yet to see it.
Since I have been deployed to Shelton over the last three weeks, moral is as high as it has ever been.
Supervisors can't say enough how peaceful it is to work with a group of employees who can act professional.
There hasn't been one case of "that's not my job" since the strike began.
With 15 years experience on the floor before making the jump to salary, I have the skills to do the work asked of me. So do all the men and women I am working with. Granted it seems like old timers day at Shea, but the work is getting done.
Someome really should enlighten the 300 or so hourly who are picketing the driveway at Shelton;
Management has taken back control of the floor. The days of calling union stewards because you don't want to work is over.
The product lines are being re-aligned for efficient flows. They are even instaling new work benches etc. for wif/when you guys come back.
Oh yeah one more thing,
for those who hid the tools, paper work, parts, attempts to sabatoge the testing equipment in the servo room;
When you get back take a look in the break room!
I have never seen so many coffee pots, toaster ovens, microwaves and refrigerators.
All of the appliances have been taken off the floor, gone for good.
Remember all the chairs you would get to sit in and do you work, trashed, stand up on the concrete now.
I also took the pride in packing up the bigest box of computer speakers I have ever seen.
Times are changing,

Y'all talk about being an "at-will" employee like it's a fate worse than death. Let me just disabuse you of that faulty notion right now. In an "at-will" environment, you don't work your ass off only to watch some old fart make off with the promotion and raise that YOU earned but HE got because he's been there longer. In an "at-will" environment, everyone works together as a team towards the good of the company and the company, in turn, pays out bonuses and other incentives based upon the success of that teamwork. You get to feel like you are a part of something, not like a freeloader. As an "at-will" employee, I make decisions about my life and my career based upon my situation, my family, my wants and needs, my relationships, etc. I don't have a bunch of illiterate thugs stealing my money and making decisions for me that are not in the best interests of me or my family. Yes, being an "at-will" employee means that you have to work hard and prove yourself, but what kind of man would I be if I didn't work hard to prove myself? Oh, yeah, I'd be a TEAMSTER.

Time for today's comment/question:
I have read multiple times how union workers would be willing to come back if they really were being offered the same package as the salary workers... that the salary workers are getting a better package (with a better pension plan I think it was). Whatever that better plan is supposed to be, are you sure you want to be the same as the salary? That would mean the same rules that they have for overtime would also apply to overtime for you. Are you ready to change that? If not, then please don't start saying you want the same setup they have.
In most cases they have also had to put forth large sums of money to get a college degree, before they would even be considered for a job. Hence, most of them have to deal with a major fanancial hardship that most nondegree people don't.
I am NOT saying they are better than those without a degree, I am simply saying that they had to have that before they could even seriously apply for a job. And yes, I know getting certifications and being acredited to do certain jobs also costs money, but is it even close to what a major 4 year degree costs?
I also understand that the jobs most of the union workers do are far more "physical", but do you really think the stresses the salary people go through in their jobs are really not as bad on them as yours? They may be different, but not better or worse.
There does seem to be an awful lot of assuming on both sides about what the others do or don't deal with. Well, maybe its time to stop bickering about that and just understand that the jobs are different. Each one has its ups and downs, but neither is any better or worse than the other.
If you, as a union member, are willing to actually take the same setup as a salary person, please stand up and be heard...

Something's not right here! I have read throughout this blog about the supposed chaos and dissention going on in the Local 1150 union.
Well, I just got back from picking up my check and the mood of the several hundred Teamsters patiently waiting in line was quite to the contrary. Every person I encountered was very upbeat and optimistic. No one was screaming for Rocco! No one was fighting! There was no riot! The members were all very pleasant and good natured.
Based on this, I think the predictions made in this blog of pandemonium ensuing at the March 15 membership meeting are ridiculous. I advise all members to attend.

Sik just announced it's hiring replacement workers. I think this war is over. From an outsider, I hope to benefit. I make $16.75 working in a factory. I will be the first in line for jobs in that factory. I will not require union backing to protect me because I actually work hard. They have great benefits and I hope to take advantage of the educational program SIK offers. If I get a 4$ raide, even to $20.75 i will be VERY happy!

Answer to 2:32--------If you know the law, you know the truth--you CAN be fired. what you've done is called a "voluntary walkout", and different rules apply for this compared to a strike. That makes you eligible to be FIRED, or don't you still understand. You can ONLY walk back in if you're still an employee, which many of you will not be.

I received a letter from SAC today (Sat. 3-11)
"BE A PART OF OUR FUTURE."
"COME BACK TO WORK."
"Your job at Sikorsky, your benefits, and your next paycheck are waiting."
"Maybe you are considering whether striking is the right answer or maybe you just want to get back to making the world's best helicopters."
"Sikorsky wants its own employees back on the job. And we'll welcome you back. If you want to return to work, call us at (203) 386-4966."

We would like to ask all of our salary workers, from all UTC divisions that are working in Sikorsky, to take Wednesday March 15, 2006 off, to force the two sides together.

We went on strike for a noneconomic reason which is health care if we went out for more pay they could permantly replace us right now they can hire temp replacements. You got to remember that the company unilaterly forced this health care package down our throats this was not negotiated or bargained for.All the members are asking for is to let us keep the medical that we have and we were willing to give up stuff from our economic portion of the contract to do this so this is why you won't be fired.

OK - Here is another point of view - You are on Day 21. Therefore almost 3 people per day, cross the line. Sikorsky only has to keep the strike going for 1180 days, and they will be union free.

I have read a lot of comments on this blog that I felt were probably a little off, some that I didn't think could be true and many that I know for a fact are outright lies. So I sat down here at my PC - at home and on my time, by the way - to try to dispell some of the many rumors and lies that are being posted about salaried people. But I realized that, sadly, it would be a lost cause. People, by and large, are going to believe what they want to believe. If you think we are walking around in the dark like idiots, cowering in the corners awaiting your return, well, that's just not happening. But if it helps you to think that, go ahead. If you think we are all going to get laid off if the company moves south, believe it if you want, but arrangements have been and are being made to transfer many of us. We will all keep our jobs, our current benefits and our pay, although we may be relocated or reassigned. Yes, many of you will return to work one day only to be laid off ten minutes after you walk through the door. I'm sorry, but it is true. If it helps you to call us bad names, then go ahead. We know who we are, we know who you are and we know the truth. We are not afraid of you, we do not hate you, although a great many of us pity a great many of you because we already know what the outcome of this strike will be and we are sorry that your decision will cause so much pain and hardship for so many. We understand and respect your fight, although some of us believe it was a battle that could never be won. I love my job and the great group of people I work with. I am proud to work for Sikorsky Aircraft. I know I do my job well and I can rest assured each night that I am giving it my all. I know, too, that I have welcomed back the hourly workers who chose to return and will continue to do so. Although it is part of my job to eliminate from my roster individuals who have not pulled their weight, have had attitude problems and who just are not good workers, I do take that part of my job seriously and it is with a heavy heart that I make the cuts I have to to make. It is a shame that this situation has escalated to the point that it has, but maybe Sikorsky and the Teamsters union should just "divorce," since they cannot reconcile their differences. Anyway, that's just my view. I don't hate anyone, I do think this is unfortunate. Good luck to us all.

Your not liking the health plan offered does not mean there is an unfair labor practice situation. The health plan is a part of the benefits package and benefits are part of each employee's overall COMPENSATION. This is, in fact, an economic strike. Now, if you are claiming unfair labor practice on the grounds that the company is refusing to bargain in good faith, be prepared to get struck down. They bargained with you for several months on the TOTAL PACKAGE. The NLRB will look at the big picture, not just the tiny issue of the medical plan. No talks have been scheduled and the union is continuing all efforts to get the company back to the bargaining table. The union has consistently stated its availability to negotiate.
Beware! The above statement taken from today's semi-daily update is the biggest lie you are hearing from your leadership. At Wednesday's meeting, ask them if they have provided the mediator with an offer that includes the 80/20 medical plan. If they have not, then they have not made every effort possible on your behalf. Get rid of this union before it gets rid of YOU.
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 3:52 PM
Alfred Giarratano Jr - H48939 should be in a much better mood today than last night! He was boasting about abondoning his friends and coworkers and had insinuated that the union was covering up the actual number of scabs to avoid panicking the membership Today he got his wish and was included in the list!
Congratulations you pathetic loser!

Salary workers unite.

LMAO! As a salaried person, I just have to shake my head at this loser - obviously an hourly employee with no job and lots of time on his hands - trying to make people think salaried personnel want to unionize. Jesus, what a joke. Nah, we are smart enough to know that unions are death to employees and companies. Nice try, though!

To Anonymous at 4:03,
Rocco doesn't handle the website. Steve is working on it at this moment. If you can do it faster, maybe you should go down to the Hall and volunteer.
Why do you feel the need to publicly display your lack of character and dignity by using profanity in your post?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 11, 2006 4:12 PM
Nah, I don't think so. I'm not union and as a salaried employee, I make an excellent living. Granted, I'm not rich, but I can afford for my wife to stay home with our children while they are young. If I could, I would bust every union in existence in this country today. They've just totally destroyed so many good companies and ruined the lives of so many members. Don't believe me? Start in Pittsburgh and start driving south along the Ohio River and tell me what you see. A whole big bunch of NOTHING. Thank you, USW! Thank you, UCW!

You shoud all be ashamed of yourselfs for all the name call when we know truly who the greedy ones are here. Thats why all these companies are going bankrupt.

Well everyone sees where your love is. for co-workers who probably didnt care one way or the other about your personal business. Most times people dont even ask about your feelings because "thats personal". I bet your family called and was there in time of need. Who will be there when we are hooked up to some machine in the hospital? co-workers? doubt it. try taking a collection for someone... $1-2 dollars. if the person doesent try to quietly walk by. get real and look into your soul. its family that is NUMERO UNO. stop getting a swelled head with the BROTHERHOOD crap. get real, see reality.

I keep hearing statements like, "the company has no mercy", "greed greed", etc etc
Any balanced minded person would say, you could make this remark about any company and any union... so it's a statement that gets you nowhere. The company is greedy bc they are asking teamsters to pay more for a more expensive health plan. On the other hand, the teamsters are greedy, because they thank Sikorsky for years of employment and wages and benefits, by not cooperating and taking on some responsibility for THEIR healthcare.
See how stupid this conversation is... get a new battle cry, nobody is bying this sob story.
And even though most salary want SOME teamsters back, we would never waste 1 precious vacation day for the benefit of a greedy union. We're not fighting your battles with you, we have our own problems.

There was an all-hands meeting in the high bay area on Thursday at 3:30 where the new president said exactly that. There were at least 2,000 salaried people there for that meeting. Believe it or not.

Take a look at the big picture.
UTC has stood firm against the union time and time again (Rockford, PW, Syracuse etc...)and shipped worked to lower cost locations.
Finger gets promoted (yes promoted) to the biggest aerospace division (4X size of Sikorsky).
Pino gets promoted. Do you think his first action as a President will be to cave to the Union? No way, he has to impress his boss and he will continue the UTC pattern to stand firm against unions and continue to find cheaper sources of manufacturing. This is a lost cause.

hourly vs salary
what a bunch of bunk!

You have been there 5 years less than me, never went to college, make double my salary, and pay shit for bennys. You suck. I went to college , take it in the ass for raises, work for free on occasion. Why do you think theres a little jealously. But its more jealously from a salary guy to a hourly dude. We outrank you and still you have it better. So if you think this messed up circus pisses salary off, you bet your leather chaps. Today as I walked amongst the many people working on the final assembly line today I made several observations:
1: With all the work being done it is hard to believe a strike is going on
2: Everyone IS WORKING, I do not see even one person that is just hanging around.
3: Everyone is happy and willing to help each other. In fact they are going out of their way to offer help.
4: It was great to see Managers, Directors and VPs in jeans and working right long side everyone else as one big team.
5: There is no longer an us vs them attitude anywhere. Hourly and Salery people working side by side. No one saying that is not my job.
It made me proud to know I am part of this team called Sikorsky Aircraft.

Yahoo 5:22 blog is the truth people! 100% accurate!
Food for thought. The jobs inside which require minimal training (which represents a large percentage) will be 100% fully functional, making more product than you've ever seen. It's already happening. The tougher jobs will be outsourced. This is also the truth.
