Digital Warfare: the battle of the iPod
I am a member of the iPod generation. The freedom of carrying your entire CD collection in the palm of your hand is tremendous! Everything is just a few clicks and scrolls away. My music selection can change just as quickly as my mood.
As I type away in my office or on my walk to work, I can be serenaded by Chris Martin or Bono, woken up by Billy Idol's Rebel Yell or fired up and ready to go to Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head(a guilty pleasure).
Now as I was surfing RollingStone.com I came across an article describing the anti-piracy encryption software which is incompatible with iTunes, annoying the many iPod owners out there.
This is an act of utmost stupidity. The record companies are trying to alienate the consumer. What is the point of creating new technology, if these companies are going to start acting like a group of babies? They complain about apparent decreases in record sales and the need for increasing the cost of downloads. Their attitudes are slowly driving the frustrated consumer away. Most will think twice before buying a new CD, wondering whether they would be better off just buying it through one of the many online music services or other illicit means.
In an age where many have digital music libraries, the large corporate music companies feel threatened by the download, be it legal or illegal. They ought to be investing time and effort into understanding and embracing this exciting medium. Instead battle lines are continually drawn and redrawn in a war without a foreseeable end.
