Scoop08: A new kind of newspaper?
This past summer, I went to a workshop for aspiring Connecticut journalists at the Yale Daily News (I would encourage any high-school-level journalist to apply; it was an incredibly valuable and inspiring experience for me). At this workshop, I had the pleasure of meeting Andrew Mangino, the current Editor-in-Chief of YDN as well as one of the creative minds behind the recently launched Scoop08 newspaper.
This newspaper is run entirely by more than 300 student correspondents in high school and college. As the launch article says, "Scoop08's launch marks the opening of a conversation between the reporter and the reader, an effort to engage all young Americans in the electoral process and to report on how and why this election is significant — to everyone." Anyone can apply to be a writer, or submit an idea to freelance.
It is quite astonishing to see how young all of the writers involved are, but it's the content that will make or break the paper. The previews of all of the stories look unbelievingly promising; it has the potential to take a more analytical look at the race than most of the media has done as of late. Essentially, if Scoop08 is the revolutionary step forward it hopes to be, it won't be the age of its writers that makes news.
