    Open House at Mar's

I just got back from a holiday open house party at the Mar Jennings home in Westport.

As you might expect, he was peddling his new book, "Life on Mar's: A Four Season Garden," which is filled with lots of entertaining, cooking and decorating ideas.

As most of you know, that other (former) Westport decorating and cooking icon had some ...uh ... difficulties with the natives, but not so with Mar. In fact, his lovely next-door neighbor, Barbara Mathias (shown here with Mar's territorial little Schnauzer, Corky) actually opened up her house as a place for people to check in and buy the book.

From there, they went over to Mar's house, which Marilyn and I love, because it proves that you don't need 15,000 square feet to have a nice house. (Here my prediction -- the big house will become the SUV of the next decade, if it isn't already.)

    Here's the front door.

The dining room. Mar was nice enough to poor some Cabernet Sauvignon -- I guess he knew I was coming?

He likes to use natural items -- here, a rhododendron leaf and a length of twine are used to hold a napkin.

He roped a couple Staples High students into guard duty. Here, Alex Herbertson makes sure no one swipes the bath mat.

Meanwhile, in his studio, Mar signs a copy of "Life on Mar's" for Westporter Joan Beer.

Ok, you probably missed Mar's holiday open house, but you can still get the book, which he might even sign for you, if you send him a nice note or some treats for Corky. He told me that 2,000 copies have gone out the door already. Click on this link for a copy: http://www.marjennings.com/store/LifeOnMars.cfm
