Howler
I'd do the litany, but you know what? My brother's in town, it's late, it's ugly. Let's do it semi-short-form, noting first that Cole Jarrett hit the post twice....
Craig Weller tries this interesting rim-around and puts it right on Sean Bergenheim's stick. A give-n-go with Robert Nilsson later, and it's 1-0. And then... And then...
And then along came Pock.
First goal (PPG), Wade Dubielewicz said he should have had, and there was some agreement on that, though there were some mitigating factors, including the defenseman setting the screen and a pretty fair shot by Pock that went off the post, off Dubielewicz's leg and in.
Second goal (PPG), everyone went to the left to Pock, who found Daniel Sparre for the easiest goal he'll ever score.
Third goal (PPG), a partially blocked shot from the point comes to Weller in front, and he's got perfect position to spin around and put it in. (Shots? 24-5.)
Fourth goal, a shot caroms off to the right corner, and everything seems to go to pot. Colby Genoway's centering pass goes off Dubielewicz to Nigel Dawes, who's wide open.
Fifth goal, Sparre draws a couple of guys to him, then passes through the wide-open lane to wide-open Blake Bellefeuille, who cuts in and pops it home.
Sixth goal, with Frederic Cloutier now in goal (34 saves for Dubielewicz, who wasn't the problem whatsoever), comes as Pock comes down the left side, puts it to the crease and hits the outside; Cloutier can't get back there before Jeff Taffe gets around his defender and tucks it around the post.
Then Steve Regier scores on a weird triple deflection (Dave Karpa's shot hits a stick and redirects off Matt Koalska and hits Regier's foot and goes in), but by then it's just window dressing.
Pick your favorite metaphor: As they came off the bench for a draw in the third, Regier and Doug Christiansen caught skates, and Regier fell over in a heap.
Including two Friday night against Lowell, the Sound Tigers allowed goals on five consecutive power plays after denying 23 of 24. It's the second time this year they have allowed five consecutive power-play goals over two games; they did it against Norfolk in the third game of the year (the tying goal with 10.2 seconds left, then the four-on-three winner in OT) and Binghamton in the fourth (three goals on three chances, including, like Friday night, both ends of a five-on-three). They had not before allowed five in a row. I found at least one four-in-five, a couple of three-in-a-rows, but five in a row is a new one this year. For fun comparison, in 2003-04, Bridgeport set a record for penalty-kill percentage. That year, the fewest number of power plays it took for opponents to score five power-play goals? It was 17, twice.
Cloutier replaced Dubielewicz to start the third, and that's the fourth time this season Baseggio has changed goalies; one, against Lowell on Dec. 2, was because of injury (Dubielewicz replaced Madden). Steve Stirling replaced his goalie four times in each of his two seasons (one, Marco Emond for David St. Germain, was also for injury); Greg Cronin did it just three times in two years. Finally put together the full list of goalie-pulls tonight, and one interesting factoid: Of the 15 times it's happened in the regular season, five have come in Hartford. That's five times out of 12 regulation losses at the Civic Center that the Bridgeport goalie has been pulled.
I asked about Joe Tallari and was told it was too difficult to get him here from Johnstown in time. Christiansen and Chris Thompson both dropped the gloves, with Thompson's coming in response to a hard David Liffiton hit on Koalska into the boards. Neither fight seemed to light a spark under their Bridgeport teammates.
Tip of the hat to Jeff Hamilton on his first NHL goal and Rob Collins on his NHL debut. Got a kick out of seeing Hamilton's name pop up on the first goal with Eric Godard as the primary assist. Second NHL point for the big man.
And best wishes to Phyllis Gretzky and her family.
