    Jewel at The Klein

I went to see Jewel at The Klein in Bridgeport Sunday night and I was glad to see a solid turnout for the singer's solo show.
I always get worried that the Greater Bridgeport area won't support these concerts and the promoters at the Fairfield Theatre Company will stop presenting them. It really is a nice place to see a concert.
Anyway, Jewel was fine, but I'm not that big a fan of her music. With just her and her guitars, the songs all started to bleed into one another, creating a bit of a monotonous feel . . . for me, anyway.
Jewel's devoted fans cheered her every move and it seemed the more bizarre the vocal phrasing (i.e. yodeling, scat-singing, etc.), the louder they cheered.
What I enjoyed was Jewel's between-song vignettes about growing up in Alaska, being homeless in San Diego, busking her way from Chicago to Tijuana. She's really led an improbable life.
And she's a charmer. She really connects with her audience, even engaging in dialogue with the crowd from time to time.
The concert ended on a high note for me, when she sang the only two songs I recognized —"Standing Still" and "Who Will Save Your Soul?" (I also recognized the opening song, the classic "Over the Rainbow," which Jewel did a cappella, almost as a warm-up song.
I had to get back to the office, so I didn't catch the encore (if there was one), but I had seen and heard enough. Jewel's fine and I can see and hear why she has such devoted fans, but it's just not my cup of tea.
