Doobie Brothers at The Klein
I caught the last hour or so of The Doobie Brothers concert at The Klein Tuesday night and I really liked what I heard.
I'm not the band's biggest fan, but I remember wearing out my copy of their greatest hits when I was a kid. So it was a lot of fun to hear the songs come to life with the original singers.
I'm talking about the older classic songs - "Black Water," "Listen to the Music," "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove" - that came before Michael McDonald led the group to superstar status.
Patrick Simmons is still there and Tom Johnston has been back in the fold for quite a while, so The Doobie Brothers have both singer-guitarists from their early days. And they sounded terrific.
Even the newer songs played Tuesday had that definite Doobie Brothers feel to them and were nice to hear, even if the majority of the near-sellout crowd was unfamiliar with them.
The Klein seems to have found its niche with these older acts and, judging from the crowds that have been turning out, fans of these bands have finally discovered The Klein. It's a great place to see a concert and there's not really a bad seat in the place.
