    Tony Almeida lives!

So the big announcement of the day is that, after delaying its premiere date, bringing on a female president and having its network entertainment chief declare that there's nothing wrong with it, "24" has made the ultimate bid to renew audience interest. It's bringing Tony Almeida back from the dead.

Yes, Fox announced today that Tony (played by Carlos Bernard), estwhile sidekick to Jack Bauer, will return for the show's seventh season. "But, wait," you say. "Didn't Tony die in season five?" That's what I thought, too. But, according to Fox, Tony didn't actually die on the floor of the CTU infirmary. He was only "left for dead." A press release issued by the network states that Tony's "uncertain fate" left the door open for him to return.
Hmmm. Well, he sure looked dead to me.
But no matter. Despite the implausibility of Tony's recovery, I'm actually glad "24" is bringing the character back. He was by far one of the show's best characters, and (with all apologies to Chloe O'Brian) is still the best foil Jack's ever had.
Besides, I've been saying for months that "24" had to do something dramatic to reinvigorate itself. What's more dramatic than bringing back Tony? I just hope they do the character justice once he's back. The worst would be if they brought him back -- and then immediately killed him. Or if they brought him back and just had him babble incoherent for 3 or 4 episodes, like they did to Kim Raver's poor Audrey Raines.
So, I'll just say this: Tony Almeida brings a lot of audience goodwill with him, "24." Please, please, please don't waste it.
