« Daniel LaRusso's going to fight? | Main | Edsall not interested »

    November 16, 2008

    Oranger pastures?

I missed basketball practice this morning. I'll probably have to run a few stadiums for coach Jim Calhoun on Monday.

Our man Chris Elsberry filled in for me (admirably, I'm sure) so he'll have the men's basketball news for us today.

As for the UConn football team, here's some info from our Sunday chat with Randy Edsall:

-- Syracuse's Greg Robinson has been fired. All indications (there really haven't been that many) are that the Orange are interested in bringing Edsall back to his alma mater and the place where he began his coaching career.

Edsall doesn't want to talk about such things, of course.

“I don’t talk about personnel issues,” Edsall said Sunday. “I never will. I’m just concerned about coaching this football team here and making them better.”

Actually, the members of the media on the line for an afternoon conference call were the first to tell Edsall the news of Robinson's firing.

“Greg’s a good guy. He’s a good coach,” Edsall said. “Things like that happen in our profession.”

-- The reverse that resulted in a 50-yard touchdown run by Jordan Todman Saturday was a new play to some viewers. But the Huskies have been running it in practice for some time.

“It scores a touchdown every time we work on it in practice,” Edsall said. “That’s why we decided to call it in the game.”

-- As reported here earlier (about 12:31 a.m. Syracuse time, I believe), Twyon Martin and Kendall Reyes are now the starting defensive tackles.

“They’ll be our starters again this week. I think they’re playing well,” Edsall said. “I thought they did some really good things in the game.”

Look for Rob Lunn and Alex Polito to continue to get some action, of course.

-- No injuries from the Cuse game, the coach says.

“Nothing new to report there,” Edsall said.

-- Edsall said the blocked punt UConn allowed was due to a miscommunication.

That's the fifth blocked punt Desi Cullen and his squad have suffered this season.

“It’s a mistake. It was some execution things in all of them,” Edsall said. “Somebody didn’t hear a call or somebody just didn’t execute the technique. All the looks we’ve seen, we’ve practiced. It’s nothing new.”

I don't think the punt was miscommunication. I've seen the replays and Marcus Campbell should have stayed inside to block, but instead went outside where 2 Cuse players were coming with only 1 UConn player to block. The difference is that the second Cuse player on the outside was too far on the outside and wouldn't have blocked the kick. Instead Campbell left the middle vacated to try to block that Cuse player on the outside and another Cuse player sneaked in and blocked the kick. I don't think that's technique. Maybe it's coaching. Maybe it's a player not using his head. Lyndon Johnson needs to get his act together and if the players blocking now can't get it done, find someone that can before it costs us another game like at UNC.
