UConn-Kentucky set
UConn's game with Kentucky at Madison Square Garden is now set.
The Huskies and Wildcats will meet Dec. 9 in the city as part of the SEC/Big East Invitational.
St. John's and Georgia will play in the first game of what will be a doubleheader at MSG.
“We are excited to be a part of this and to have the opportunity to play a program like Kentucky,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said in a statement. “We always try to schedule against the best and think this is a continuation of that tradition for us. In addition, it is always exciting for our team and our fans to play in Madison Square Garden, an arena that has been the site of so many successes for us over the years.”
UConn and Calhoun have won seven championships at MSG _ the 1988 NIT championship and the 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2004 Big East tournament championships. Under coach Calhoun, UConn is 44-29 at MSG; 8-7 in 15 regular season games against St. John’s University, 28-17 in Big East tournament games and 8-5 in other tournament play in MSG. Connecticut had a record of 6-15 in Madison Square Garden prior to Calhoun’s arrival at UConn.
On Dec. 10 at St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., DePaul will take on Mississippi State on ESPN2, followed by Syracuse vs. Florida on ESPN. Game times for all four matchups will be announced at a later date.
UConn beat Kentucky in those teams’ only meeting in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament in Philadelphia.
Tickets for the 2009 SEC/Big East Invitational are expected to go on sale in early summer. For more information, visit the official web site: secbigeastinvitational.com.
